Butternut squash, in one of your open field areas dig several holes 5 ft apart about 2 ft deep fill with a good 50/50 mix soil and dirt soak hole really good and plant 2 or 3 seeds in each one. As long as you keep watering them they will spread out all over the field and give you many squash that are in the winter squash family and can store all winter.

The stones give off a thermal mass during the night. The beds might take somewhat more water, so there's the complexity. I'm not sure if you know about "chop and drop" for enhanced soil fertility. Basically, any green material which is either pruned away or cut away is dropped on the soil, becoming either mulch for trees or garden beds. Just be careful not to add unwanted seed heads or seeds into open soil. The diversity is an excellent beginning.
@ninemoonplanet2 жыл бұрын
Cardboard on new areas needs to be at least 2 layers deep with any gaps overlapping. It must be soaked thoroughly or it sheds water. Place the cardboard outside the frame of the beds, you could put it under the pathways. Volunteer tomatoes are often good to grow, although you end up with surprises along the way. 😅
@ninemoonplanet2 жыл бұрын
Add dried grass, veggies scraps, then more dried material, this should boost the composting process faster. Cats decided to "posses" the box, you might need 2 more. 😉

A tip from my youth as a construction laborer. Try to always handle each item as few times as possible, preferably only once. For example, you: 1) carried your clay roof tiles to a staging area, 2) carried them from the staging area to the road, and 3) loaded them onto a wheelbarrow. In each segment of the process, you had to a) arrange the tiles in a pile, b) squat down to pick the pile up, c) squat back down to carefully to put the tiles down in a pile. This is a both a waste of both time and exhausting because of the brute strength necessary to squat down and stand up. Taking smaller piles from their original location all the way into the wheelbarrow would save two of your three squats. And, although you'd take fewer per trip, you'd move faster and be less exhausted

About the "why don't you get a tractor" question: I think you're on the right track. I don't have a particular solution for you, but you could look for inspiration into "The Sunshine Farm Project". That was a 10-year demo project in the 90s to explore how a modern farm could be energetically self-sufficient. Among other solutions, they had a tractor for some tasks but would run it on locally produced biodiesel, and they were growing their own oilseeds for that. Also, there's a very interesting chapter 18 "The Energetics of Agroecosystems" dedicated to all this, which you can find in the freely available e-book "Agroecology - The Ecology of Sustainable Food Systems". Best of luck with your journey!

Biodiesel is pretty inefficient spacewise (and it stinks). Don't know were you are on your tractor journey, elektrofrosch is a german company producing a concept that might interest you, it's like a very skaled down electric car optimised for utility (45km/h max, 700kg max on public roads) available in different variants. Might need to rescale your solar setup for that, then again I guess you need it most on sunny days?

There's certainly many other ways of doing things without using a tractor or relying on fossil fuels. That's what I think too, going forward we are hoping to have a donkey and a couple of goats, for manure, grass cutting and milk for cheese. Though that's a long way off. We still need to be able to move into the house before tackling the land and water, everything seems to take so much longer that I want it to!

Gracias! Vamos a ver!

Hi Harriet Well done. Youre such a hard worker! You put so much effort to dig your garden and then you covered it by cardbord. It’s waste of money. Your soil looks fertile so I ‘d just mix that manure with soil. And be very sparse as chicken manure is very strong and the way you put it will burn all your plants and all your hard work will be wasted. If i was you, I would buy a small inexpensive cultivator, its very effective and save you lots of back pain. Good luck.
@LittleSpanishFarmstead2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I usually find cardboard for free in recycling bins so it's not usually an expense and it really helps keep the moisture in the soil, and the weeds down! I'd say it's worth it, but I am experimenting without cardboard too so I guess I'll find out. I'm leaving those beds with the manure mixed in for minimum 3 months before planting (probs planting in autumn here) - what do you think?

Hola Chicos.

We've been reading about the floods in Valencia. Hope you are ok?

Yes, apparently in the city they had the highest rainfall ever recorded in 24 hours! It rained a lot here but not quite as much. We're good, thank you!

great work! i love yourway of thinking and i agree...about the tractor, yes it would make life easier but then how sustainable is it? maybe a donkey and a small cart? that way you give a home to a donkey and useful last years with easier job? or a mule or horse? some of those animals get sacrificed when they can still do some chores ina small farm. i would make it a priority to have a clearance spot for deliveries taht way you can take your time to move the cargo. i have been thinking about having a small homestead in portugal, despite being a native spanish speaker, i feel more welcome in portugal than in spain ( i am costa rican and live in the netherlands) why did you choose spain?
@LittleSpanishFarmstead2 жыл бұрын
A donkey (or 2) would be lovely. We chose Spain because Mauro's family live here! We didn't want to be far away from both families.
