Great job! How about using the nodig method to get rid of the weeds? I.e. cardboard (perhaps a couple of layers) on top of the weeds, a layer of compost on top of the cardboard and direct sow (the plants will push through). Perhaps you already know just thought of it when you were weeding 🤗

@LittleSpanishFarmstead2 жыл бұрын

For protecting wood from pests and such, look up the Japanese method. Not sure of the spelling 'shoshugi ban'. The protective covering for your wires is called conduit. At least it is in the US. Can you use any type of radish for preserving? You guys do great work as always. I made my 1st no dig bed. So much easier than digging.

It's all going along very nicely, and the gardens are looking great, you're getting a lot done. It's always nice to see Spring & Summer in other parts of the world as we head into Winter. Used oil is carcinogenic and can contaminate your land and water with heavy metals, so it would be better to find another solution. Linseed oil or shou sugi ban as others have suggested, normal paint, or even leaving it raw if you think you'll be rebuilding in a year or two. Sanding the surface of the timber will greatly reduce the amount you need to apply, but... sanding... blergh! Look into Tek screws for attaching roofing, much easier👍 Hope you both have a great Summer!

Sometimes it is much better to purchase a bigger can of paint/stain even though it is much dearer. You might be using pallets for more projects in the future. And even pallet wood soaks up stain / paint on the first coat.. Congratulations on your first roof. Just one thing you might want to consider to add another two roof beams just set back on the ends, this will help stop the wind catching the roofing material and lifting it off and putting undo stress on your screws. Just a thought. There is always life in soil otherwise the weeds wouldn't be growing so well. Situate your beds in the direction of as much daily sun as they can get. If you really want a food forest in the future ( instead of beds then put down your cardboard & wood chips and makes pathways and plant accordinally.. You can do it girl. I think that cable cover from that power box needs to go right through the hole you drilled in the house and then use something like spray foam to plug the hole so none of your rats get in..

Gran Trabajo! Hello Harriet. It's lovely to see the progress on ur farm. Can't wait for the chickens to hatch and we'll be having little chooks soon. And it's so nice to see that u have Amaranth in ur garden. I barely see them in anyone farm while it is the easiest plan to germinate and grow. It could be harvest in just 20days. It tastes sweet not bitter at all. It has a red variety too, very beautiful. I have some in my small garden. Ur video made my day when I couldn't go out to my garden today coz there's a monsoon rain here. Take good care Harriet! Much love from Me(Lily) and my cats(Ayu and Nigel) ❤️ ❤️

Harvested in 20 days, wow I had no idea - that's for the leaves I assume, I actually didn't know you could eat the leaves so that's exciting! I was growing it for the seeds. Hope your monsoon rain eases up soon!

Great progress! Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but it might not be a bad idea to add a rain catchment system to the chicken coop. That way at least some of their drinking water can be provided locally. You could even go as far as adding a simple gravity-fed automatic chicken watering system (KZbin has loads of videos on the subject)

Hi just came across your channel and interested in permaculture, love everything you are doing and looking forward to doing the same in the next year or so. One subject that I've heard about in Spain is bureaucracy regards building regs, what is your experience? Have you done a vlog on this subject? Regards Paul
@LittleSpanishFarmstead2 жыл бұрын
With building regs and anything like that, be very careful listening to what people online say, there is lots of misinformation out there. Especially since things very a LOT between different regions and even different towns, when you are buying a rural/old/ruined property that wasn't previously lived in. The only way you can really be sure what you will be allowed to do is to speak to a specific town hall about a specific property that you are interested in. We did talk about this a bit on one of our q&a vlogs which I think you commented on too, but we basically say the same thing there.

Thank you! The vinegar is added cold. I boiled the jars first just as an added precaution, and then add the radish, vinegar and flavourings. I don't boil or waterbath the jars once they're full because I'm confident the vinegar inhibits bacterial growth.

@LittleSpanishFarmstead2 жыл бұрын
Just cold vinegar poured over the seed pods. I soaked the pods in salt water for 24 hours to improve flavour and crunchiness. The vinegar is a good preservative, no need for a water bath. I usually keep in a cool place and eat within a couple of months but not sure what the "official" guidance would be on vinegar preservation.

Hi Harriet. I think you are suffering from Schedule Chaos. It usually happens to those who start as self-employed, when it comes to putting priorities in order. Normally what we do is put in front what brings together urgency and importance, then what is urgent but not important, and then what is important that is not urgent, and determine which hours of the day are for work, and which are for rest, and the food and sleep routines, which should be just that, routines. Good for physical and mental health. I hope you find it useful.

Unfortunately "food safe, animal, child safe products are expensive. I used some on my raised beds siding (wood) and spent quite a lot on the preservative. You two have achieved a lot more than you even expected. The gardens are looking very productive. I didn't know those radish seed pods were both edible and could be pickled.
