I am absolutely fascinated by your work. I've never seen anything like it. Up until I saw this video I honestly didn't even think it was possible to do paintings that are this detailed on ceramics! I'm feeling endlessly inspired and I found a pottery studio near me that offers kits to paint ceramics at home which they'll then fire for you. Obviously my first pieces won't be as breathtaking as your work, but it's inexpensive and looks like I'd enjoy it a lot! Should I get white or are highlights exclusively achieved by scratching off the "paint" and watering down the colors? I paint in transparent watercolors and opaque mediums like oils, so I'd be fine with either technique . But which one would you recommend for someone who has never painted ceramics?
@LittleStreetPottery3 жыл бұрын
So glad you are inspired to create! The white I get is achieved by either scraping away or leaving the space unpainted. I use porcelain so it’s going to show white when fired. I paint using underglazes and a watercolor technique on bisque clay. Good luck!

It looks like the black dash lines create a pillow or relief effect with the clear glaze. Like incidental texture. Is that a reaction with the underglaze and clear glaze? I never work with underglaze and don't know, but was looking into using it and saw that was interesting.

I am a potter and very involved in raising Monarch Butterflies as well, providing a pollinator garden and habitat for them and other pollinators. I was absolutely blown away by how simple you make it seem to do the Monarachs! Your step by step instruction was just amazing. Next Spring, when I get my gas kiln set to go, I will be trying to do this project; I can't Thank you enough! In fact, I have bone dry pieces ready NOW, and I think I'll order Underglazes and give it a try! I wonder, Have you fired these to cone 6 for the glaze firing? I ask, because the clay I have is high fire stoneware for cone 6 to 10. So I guess i could bisque to cone 04 and try glaze firing to cone 6? I'm new at firing too (only one bisque and 1 glaze firing 12 years ago, winging it all the way!). Anyway, thanks for the instruction - it was wonderful!
@LittleStreetPottery3 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane, the label on the underglazes advertises that they are for low firing but people have fired many of them to mid range and even higher with success. I would recommend testing before committing them to your clay. I fire to cone 5 and a little hotter with success. Good luck. I’m glad you are returning to clay
