Got to love the hellfire missile, so accurate it's scary. The AGM-114R9X version has blades that are meant for single target assassinations and literally chops them to pieces.

So are these VLS tubes being utilized for land attack or can these LCS vessels also pack ESSMs or SM missiles on board in addition to Tomahawk?
@chesterwang3070
@chesterwang3070 Жыл бұрын
They are much much much too small to fit anything like a Standard Missile or Tomahawk. These VLS cells are completely different from the Mk41 used to launch the aforementioned missiles. LCS also doesn't have the ability to guide those surface to air weapons; it can't even guide the RIM-116 itself, which is why they need it to be paired with SeaRAM to launch those.

The US Navy wanted to put hellfire missiles on small ships, in order to protect against small ships and boats. In a real war, the US Navy is not going to use these LCS ships with short range missiles against land targets. The USMC has a USV with a 50 call machinegun and hellfire missiles, in order to sneak up on land targets or defend against amphibious invasions. This hellfire system is much too small for any large missiles, like standard missiles or tomahawks.
@Austin-cx2xe

Why does it matter? Those missiles provide no use on a system like this. Because of Russian and Chinese propaganda people think the missile is all that matters, you can have the most advanced missiles, if you don't have the infrastructure or sensors to properly use it, it's pointless. The GM-114L is a great choice as it's a LITTORAL combat ship, it's supposed to be close to shore.

Weapons cost tooooo darn much, The government needs to mass produce them. And allow many companies to bid the price DOWN!! Or the government should make them themselves and mass produce them. Stop buying from expensive contractors.
@soulsphere9242
@soulsphere9242 Ай бұрын
There are not many companies that are capable of producing advanced weapons systems. Because the total market is relatively small it is not viable to have many different competing manufacturers like there was during WW2, when endless money was thrown at defence. During the Cold War and after, the companies had to merge to survive. Systems become more expensive to develop, but lower orders mean there is less volume to be made, so they have to jack up the margins per weapon.

@Austin-cx2xe
@Austin-cx2xe 5 ай бұрын
When people comment such things like why not use this missile it has better range blah blah, you know they're very uneducated. The US military chooses performance and standardization rather than pure range with their missiles. When your entire military is the size of 3 aircraft carriers you can afford to constantly upgrade and switch missile systems. But not when you have the largest military in the world. Not only that, the US has air superiority in basically all air spaces. Something no other military has or can have, which is why the military doesn't feel the need to boast or create these hyped up missiles

@@redosorio5278 that above its not a mk41 vls nor the JAGM missile it’s low cost , it’s just the replacement for the hell fire which the army already agrees it’s to short range even if it as a little longer range than the hell fire at 12 km depending on launch condition. Even the British Brimstone has better range with the same dimensions. Btw the army will be using the Nlos missile on the apaches

I known it’s not mk41 vls, but the missile is a hellfire which I’m mistaken a JAGM, I think it’s base on that platform with EXLS design from lockheed martin, or some new hybrid platform that can launch hellfire missile. They already put Naval Strike Missile on their Independence class LCS, which is more range than spike nlos, but they replace it. Of course, there is a practical reason behind it.

LMAO at the US Navy's hype video. The USN knows the word is out about these ships being junk, so now they try to make some marketing video, in order to make those look useful. In a real war, the USN is not going to strike the shore with hellfire missiles from a ship. In a real war, that will not happen, especially since all of the beer cans in the Independence Class are going to be mine warfare ships. Also funny that the USN recently started putting hellfire missiles on small ships to defend against other small ships, but the hellfire is going to be replaced by the JAGM.

"Joined Mar 2, 2022" I would have to guess this is a troll account, on the off chance it's not, these ships aren't going to be on the front lines in a real war... The L in LCS stands for littoral. They are meant to defend the the coastal waters at high speeds. It carries the NSM for longer range engagements. The Hellfires will strike amphibious ships trying to land if a nation ever tried to invade the US or can also be used to attack aerial targets like drones. Every ship has issues the Freedom Class LCS has a combining gear issue, the Type 45 has propulsion issues, Russian ships constantly need a tug boat and so on. Nothing is perfect.

About 15 years later... none of these ships are ready for anything, because the multi mission packs were never created. Both LCS ship class were doomed from the start. @@willw8011 :The LCS concept was a waste from the start... and over hyped." This is your opinion not fact. " Years ago, the government did not want to buy frigates, so it thought up this LCS multi-mission delusion" They are different classes of ships meant for different things, the LCS doesn't even have a VLS. It's no where near as armed as a Frigate. " About 15 years later... none of these ships are ready for anything, because the multi mission packs were never created. Both LCS ship class were doomed from the start." It has has 4 modular mission packages. "The SSMM is one of four modules comprising the LCS Surface Warfare Mission Package. Using Army Longbow Hellfire missiles in a vertical launch capability to counter small boat threats, SSMM increases both the range and the number of targets LCS can engage." " Independence class ships continue to have structural cracking, which limits those to almost calm waters and low speeds." The issue was fixed and never affected their ability. Only 1 ship ever had restrictions put on it do to the flaw. "The issue was first identified in 2019 in the second commissioned ship, Coronado. The solution to the issue was to replace the deck plate and shell plate with plates of thicker material. Austal making a statement that the cracks do not "pose a risk to the safety of Sailors on board the ships" and NAVSEA stating that the cracks do not affect the ships' ability to execute their missions" "The USN wanted to retire most of the Independence ships and all of the completed Freedom ships. The US Congress said no, so the USN gets to continue maintenance on these mistakes. " They never wanted to retire most the Independence class LCS, they had planned on retiring the first 4 do to them being test beds. They never put money into upgrading them. The Freedom class had a worse issue which is why they tried to retire them. "During planning for the FY21 Budget proposal, Navy recommended the decommissioning of hulls 1-4 in 2021, some 10 years ahead of prior planning. This was explained by Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Mike Gilday, during the WEST Conference on 2 March 2020, when he said: We made a decision a number of years ago. … In order to give capability to LCS 5 and beyond, particularly the block buys we did in 2015, we decided we needed to do much more testing and use those first four hulls, so that we could better understand what were the issues with respect to hull maintenance and engineering that kept plaguing us and kept us from getting those ships to sea. … We used those first hulls to test and we put no money into upgrading them like the rest of the fleet" "The LCS was supposed to to be a combat ship and these missiles were supposed to protect larger ships from small boats within close range." They were meant to patrol the littoral zone which is green water, they weren't meant to defend larger ships as they lack the VLS for real air defense. The Hellfire is meant to strike shore targets in an amphibious landing, or down helicopters/drones. It's NSM gives it the ability to target amphibious ships trying to land on US soil. "The LCS was also supposed to be capable of deploying with a CGS or ARG, and some have in the past." It's not a blue water ship, it's meant for green water hence it's name. Could and has it been in blue water, sure, but it's not going to be protecting a CSG with it's lack of VLS. "youtube did not like my last comment about them and their lack of freedom of speech... perhaps that is also now restricted speech." Even though we disagree with each other, this I can 100 percent agree with you on. KZbin is terrible on Freedom of speech and removes, shadowbans, etc comments on things they dislike which is rather sad and can make it hard to have discussions, debates, etc with other people. I don't see us agreeing on much so I wish you well and thanks for not trying to troll and explain why you think the way you do even if we don't agree. Hard to find people online who can disagree without all the name calling. Have a good one man.

@@ThatCarGuy It is not my opinion... it is a fact. All of these years later, the USN says the multisession modules will never be built. That is a complete failure of the design purpose of these ships. The Oliver Hazard Parry Class Frigate also did not have any VLS. Those had one arm launchers, which were taken off due to the missile being removed for service. A lot fo those were also retired early, because oddly enough... those were a waste of money to keep. The Independence LCS with the hellfire missile will not have NSM launchers, because there is not enough room on the deck. The USN is never ever do an amphibious landing with these ships as support. These ships would not last a day close to enemy controlled land. The USMC and USN have helicopters capable of using hellfire missile, and those will be using JAGM in the future, because the hellfire does not have enough standoff range. The US Army, USMC and USN already say the hellfire does not have enough standoff range for a small fast helicopter, so a bigger slower ship is not going to use these in combat close to enemy held land. The LCS have already deployed with CSG. The LCS was supposed to be able to do ASW and defend against USVs and small boats, like the Iranians and other Navies are using. The detection range for a small boat is often short range, shorter range than a NSM or Harpoon can deal with. The Coast Guard has better ships than these. The little ships with big hype that supposedly could do everything from mine warfare, patrolling, ASW, boarding other ships, special forces missions, cargo transport, and defense against small USV boats... well that failed. So now the USN has a little ship that cannot go anywhere close to combat, because it would be sunk. These ships also cost a lot due to corrosion issues. Seems the USN will never learn its lesion about Steel+ aluminum+ salt water. Oh yeah, totally OK to have a ship cracking... its a great company buy their wonderful products. Totally normal to have structural cracks. BTW, Aluminum is very fussy about being welded/ repaired, especially cracks.
