Well the JMSDF was interested and took a look at US Navy's LCS program developments since 2000s. If you want to know, 30DEX concept (predecessor of 30FFM) take a lot of similiar design and features of LCS. Today's 30FFM still have LCS' DNA but discarded all problems that LCS had, following the global frigate trend.

The LCS was dead as soon as they made it. US has no need for a littoral combat ship. They’re a blue water navy so having a ship specialise in an almost irrelevant field of battle as frigates can do the LCS role plus more.

@@definitelyfrank9341 In its original configuration no, but the Batch 2 configuration as showcased at IndoPacific 23 shows an enlarged Mogami with a 32 cell VLS akin to it's US counterpart. It is currently one of 4 vessels types being considered for the RAN(Royal Australian Navy) General Purpose Frigate programs which aim to procure 11 of the type.

Sounds exactly what the US Navy needs. From 2017 to 2024 they have almost 8 ships on the line. WE still don't have final design done as the Navy has completely redesigned the Italian frigate we were going to buy. Cut the current Coast Guard cutter in half. Add a 30 foot plug, add another engine in it and VLS and you have your frigate. Send the LCS to the CG on a one to one basis and get some use out of those ships.

A frigate for only 300-400M, that's half the cost of a US LCS and unlike the LCS, it works. At least the LCS kept alot of retired admirals and captains with a lifetime supply or champagne and caviar

In an intense battle, yes they are vulnerable. Especially to the aerial threats since they only have the main gun, 11 rounds of SeaRAM, ECM and chaffs for AAW. So the JSDF is intend to modify all 8 Mogami frigates with upgraded radar systems and 16 cells of VLS(can be loaded with 4×SAM or 1×SUM each). And the 7th to the last 12th ships are going to be armed with VLSs when they commissions. So don’t worry about it:)👍

This ship is designed to supplement the US navy. It doesn't have the VLS size or the radar for air defense at all. Mainly a glorified sub hunter.

Supplement? You may say whatever if you want… but, the fact is that JMSDF’s anti-submarine warfare capability is the top of the world and US fleets are their best friends in arms to fight alongside the Pacific. FYI, VLS armament addition is already scheduled and their next-gen frigates will be equipped with such AAM arsenals by commissioning.

Thats one of the best of the destroyers aka Frigates they just need a diferent type of armament that includes land attack capability and long range weapons like heavy Rocket artillery system with 254mm rockets that can reach 200km or more and the use of the Vulcano amunnition in that 5'inch gun but a new naval gun with a 160mm bore is what is needed in naval warfare with a 50kg projectile to 55kg and a good range of 40km RAP ammo, but Rocket artillery is the future in naval warships heavy rockets in the 320mm and a range of 300 to 320km with a 300kg warhead to strike with accuracy targets on land or a lighter 254mm 125kg warhead, and Europe will be the ones that will have or be forced by their people because enough its enough its like Japan now a peaceful country but surrounded by enemies great investments in defense and develop home grown thecnology and nationalized key military industrial complex capacity for true capabilities to fight the future enemies that are rearming and developing a great range of weapons
