Queen Elizabeth tonnage 65,000 tonnes. Can one make a small carrier 165,000 tonnes and put 20 f35 jets. 4 chinnocks helecopters 10 attack helicopter. 200 crew 100 maintenance engineers 300 marines commando with boxer APC and Ajax APC for a strike group.

A carrier is only as good as the aircraft it has on board and these ship’s lack of any type of AEW or airborne refuelling capability makes them more vulnerable in a real shooting war against a capable enemy. I don’t expect this Labour government to prioritise defence but these vessels need to be converted to CTOL capability at the earliest opportunity.

That all depends on use case, the F-35B can operate where runways are destroyed like some conflict where there are many small islands, where islands can be lost and gained back with shifting control of area. Runways are the #1 target so the F-35B is a real problem for the enemy. The enemy will never really know if they denied air power or not, that is a big problem. The enemy Air forces could deploy, conduct heavy bombing, and send out landing ships but get a total surprise F-35B raid launched out of islands that were flattened previously. That's a major headache.

Just to underscore what a massive improvement this is over the Harrier, the F-35B can do everything a Harrier can and more and better while literally carry more than the whole empty weight of a Harrier in weapons
