4:55 It's indeed debateable. But still he played a major role, even if most of his achievements were done through others. Directly due to his actions he brought all these men together to do great things. If he wasn't there Guan Ye would most likely be a bandit, and Zhang Fei would be a butcher all his life. Finding great talent, the diamonds in the rough and give them the oppertunity they need is a talent on it's own. There are so many great men and women in the world that don't know their real potentional, if you're a person that has the talent to undercover and use said potentional... So yea directly or indirectly without him fuck all would've happened.

I have never been a Liu Bei fan but Lou Guanzhong was dead right in picking him as essentially the fantasy protagonist of the story in ROTK. If you think about it, a naive farm boy with a secret lineage set out to correct a broken corrupt world with his oathsworn friends is the same template for characters like Luke Skywalker and Rand Al Thor of Wheel of Time series. He gets into conflicts with powerful villains and sees corrupt demi-Gods running the show, and then finally rises above many of them to become a leader. But I also find the fact that he was denied to have a Lord of the Ring, Star Wars type of ending ovation surprisingly modern (I mean historically he was relegated to fail) but I find even that kind of narrative choice...modern in a way. He failed, and I find that the audience could learn more from his failure than an infinite number of the likes of "mUH goOd kANgz" Aragorn. His his failure we also see a sense of Greek Tragedy, for the world to reduce his bros one by one, for him to- despite a life or restraint and benevolence (book version) launch an all out doomed assault against the Wu. It's is unwise and politically a failure, but he wouldn't be the person he is if he allowed those who killed the bros who defined him to live on~ and in the end it killed him by destroying his health. 3 Brothers, dying so close to each other's death as they have sworn to do. In his nihilistic failure we learn about the nature of political orders in this world in a brutal almost Ned Stark way. Yet ironically even in his failure (book version) we kind of like him more because although the world is corrupt and filled with cynical ruthless sharks, although he was stripped of his friends and assets endlessly until he is boiled to his bones, he would still fight on for a romanticized sense of brotherhood and doomed loyalty to the Han ideal. Despite his failure he fought endlessly against a corrupt world like a battered yet unyielding boxer. I mean what is the Romance~ about, if not the Romantic notions that was believed so much by this protagonist?

@Dragons_Armory
@Dragons_Armory 5 жыл бұрын
@@katsuieshibata7493 I would say I thought he was cool when I was little, I was going along with how my parents and many readers of ROTK viewed him. But after I learned about the historical Liu Bei I was rather disillusioned with the historical version of him. Compared to the achievements of the likes of Cao Cao and the Sun family I find Liu Bei's legacy lacking. The idea of Liu Bei far outmatches the real Liu Bei- who chief attributes includes a 6 degrees of separation of running into more dynamic characters, and loosing to them, and wanting lands that was not his (that he ended up loosing.) For Tian's sake how many old man's houses he is going to enter, to magically gets the whole province as an inheritance, just to loose it and covet something else? It seems his greatest assets is just resourcefulness in surviving and attracting powerful followers. Still- I will say that I acknowledge that he serves a vital nitche in both the political order of the 3K world and also in the narratives of the literature. In a realm of cynical sharks that all did away with the pretense of the Han and of a riteous order. He was the good ol boy (good ol, conservative Confucian boy) to still want to put the pieces together. The fact that he kept getting struck down and then try to rally for that cause is quite interesting. And although his views are already obsolete for his age, the fact that he stuck to this loyalist cause despite endless loss is still worth of respect. That doomed sense of loyalty, and need to create an alternative haven for his beliefs even though his brothers are dead and hard won lands are lost is really something. I find it quaint that the world order has already shifted and everybody else all lowered their head and found their places within the new order without protest but lumpy, big eared Liu Bei, either because of dumbness or stubbornness went to the mountains and still lamented the same dreams toward the Han dynasty. There is an element of Don Quixote in there, the age is already dead yet he still devoted to it.

@@Dragons_Armory Historically Liu Bei had his share of victories that are attributed to Zhuge Liang in the romance for example, he was the one who defeated Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin at Bo Wan PO, he was the leader of his forces at Chi Bi etc. Then you ask how many times will he get his territory thanks to old men who died, I will give you the answer It happened one time with Tao Qian and here again, Liu Bei had to be crafty, he made alliance with the most powerful clans of the region (Mi and Chen) and used his influence as a capable general and the man liked by the common people to inherit the land which is the best way to conquer, Lu Meng did the same thing for the Jing province and I see nobody whining that he cheated and that Guan Yu would have defeated him otherwise. Then your second paragraph is weird because you start repeating the propaganda from the romance that Liu Bei was loyal to the Han, that everything was for the emperor, that he cried every night under the sky for his nephew suffering, etc etc. dude, I think everyone was after his own gain and while Cao Cao treated Liu Bei well he just wanted to be at the top of the scale not under somebody else. Liu Bei was a pretty ambitious guy, It's seen through his life.

01:43 Guan yu`s description here is quite inaccurate. He was not known as a bandit. He was a Beef Skewer hawker until he tried to save a Woman who was about to be sexually assaulted by two Officials in his hometown in Changsha. He offed the said official. After killing two official, he became a wanted man for murder. So he fled and got into a job as a Bodyguard of a seedy inn. Where he met ZhangFei and Liu Bei. Guan Yu was known and respected for his honour, virtue, loyalty and tenacity. Resulting in him being worshipped to this day as a deity in many parts of China, especially in Police Stations and Traids as a Martial god of Honour that ward off lesser man (of virtues, ie untrustworthy traitors and cowards) Cody however, was right about Guan Yu`s infamous Arrogance which resulted in his downfall and capture after losing the city of Jingzhou , a City where Liu Bei and Sun Quan of Wu was arguing for. Sun Quan at first tried to coaxed Guan Yu to join him, Guan Yu refusing to surrender, ended in his execution. ... Spooky Trivia and Legend : Cao Cao`s Death and Guan Yu`s Head. Sun Quan knew that offing Liu Bei`s Oathsworn brother will threw him into a rage, so he decided to scapegoat Cao Cao of Wei by sending Guanyu`s decapitated head to him. (Even tho that felled miserable and made Liu Bei go all out on Sun Quan out of revenge) Cao Cao , not being a idiot knew of this. Did made a respectable funeral for Guan Yu. However, this is where Three Kingdoms became a Ghost Story. Legend has it that Cao Cao at night went to open Guan Yu`s coffin to mock him. However as he did so, Guan Yu`s Corpse suddenly opened his eyes, giving Cao Cao a nasty Jumpscare. After that , every night Cao Cao has nightmares of Guan Yu haunting him and his health worsen. Not long later, Cao Cao died ot a stroke. Historians said this could be hallucinations of Cao Cao who was suffering a severe head tumour back then.

Fictionalized, Liu Bei was the hero of the story. He is the people's champion, the lord who rules based on benevolence, and is idealistic despite it costing him over and over. He takes the high path, eventually leading to his goal. More Accurate? He was a good man, but a leader has to make hard choices. And at the end of the day, he was all about the people, with personal honor and his own life being secondary. So yeah, he probably did underhanded things, compromised his honor for political power... but in the end you could still call him a good but flawed man. Because no leader worth their salt will ever be completely free of taking the darker path to reach the destination.

Liu Bei was actually quite cleaver, if not a skilled liar. His claim to his lineage was never proven to be a fact, but he managed to use it and won the support of millions. Liu Bei claimed to be the descendant of Liu Sheng, Duke of Zhongshan, brother to the Wu Emperor of Han, a figure 300 years before Liu Bei's birth and notorious for his hedonist lifestyle (who also left wonders such as the jade burial suit, and a set of double-headed dildo). The said duke would end up siring at least 120 sons. Liu Sheng was simply the perfect candidate for Liu Bei to claim imperial lineage.
@unifieddynasty

What do you mean by "never proven to be a fact"? To what extent can we prove any historical lineage as "fact"? We rely on historical records to prove Liu Bei's ancestry as we do for any historical figure.
@TakCWAL
@TakCWAL 5 жыл бұрын
Except historical records do not prove that as a fact. Liu Bei’s ancestral lineage can only be traced to his grandfather, Liu Xiong, and anything else before that would have been guesswork. Liu Bei deliberately selected Liu Sheng as ancestor, because one, he knew it was impossible to trace, and two, he just so happens to live in a county where that lineage originated. When he made that claim, his competitors, such as Cao Cao, simply scoffed at the notion, dismissing it as nonsense. Even the Record of the Three Kingdoms noted: Liu Bei descended from Emperor Jing, but due to the passage of time, this is difficult to verify.

@@TakCWAL It's a bit of a logical leap to assert that Liu Bei falsified his own ancestry simply because we only have proof up to Liu Bei's grandfather. Consider Occam's Razor -- that Liu Bei's contemporaries and subsequent historians have not denounced and rejected Liu Bei's royal lineage.

@TakCWAL 5 жыл бұрын
@@unifieddynasty This is not difficult to articulate. Liu Bei made claim to this lineage in his adulthood as a marketing ploy. If you believed it, great, less work for him. If you didn't, then he could force you into compliance with a level of political justification. Liu Bei's contemporaries did not dispute or denounce this lineage mainly because they didn't have to. Most of Liu Bei's rivals either scoffed at the notion or dismissed it completely. Moreover, common opinion at the time held that the Han Dynasty lost the mandate of heaven and needed to be replaced anyway. Han loyalists cling to the idea not only because they desire a restoration of the Han Dynasty, or that Liu Bei may or may not descend from a royal lineage, but because Liu Bei had an actual army to secure their interests. To your second point, the most amicable answer you have from subsequent historians regarding this subject (if they didn't outright call him a liar) is something along the lines of 'this claim cannot be verified due to passage of time' as noted in the aforementioned 'Record' of the Three Kingdoms. In fact, for 800 years after the Three Kingdoms, Liu Bei was viewed as an obstructive force to the reunification of China, and that Cao Cao was the designated hero who sought to restore peace back to China. This view only changed during the Southern Song Dynasty, where Liu Bei received a historical hero upgrade due to political necessity, and subsequent Romance of the Three Kingdoms published during the Ming Dynasty further cemented this position.
@unifieddynasty
@unifieddynasty 5 жыл бұрын
@@TakCWAL Again, you are making logical leaps and passing on your assertions as facts. Your original position is that Liu Bei lied his way into his Liu lineage but you have absolutely zero proof of this. You are simply stating that the multiple historical records on Liu Bei are spotty and that contemporaries of Liu Bei somehow tolerated his claim of Liu ancestry. This does not at all prove your original position. All other points you bring up regarding Liu Bei's deuteragonism are tangential.

Zhang Kai is the officer's name. He was a former Yellow Turban/bandit/rebel and in CA's Three Kingdoms game, he is a general who serves the Yellow Turban general Gong Du. Cao Cao had always wanted a reason to take Xuzhou and his father's murder provided the justification. Also, Tao Qian is a prick because he would imprison people who didn't want to serve him and even attempted to kill Sun Ce's family simply because Sun Ce was Yuan Shu's vassal.

Now that the game is out, I can say that the kind of player Liu Bei for, is the aggressive expansionist. Because Liu Bei can annex Han's settlements and the fact there are so many Han's settlement near Liu Bei's starting position, the only option is to aggressively annex as much as you can, don't let Kong Rong capture any Han's Settlement, but don't attack him, instead join a coalition with him and let him take out Yellow Turban to the north and have him be the buffer between you and Yuan Shao. After that, either expand west to link up with Liu Biao, or expand south to take out Sun Jian.

Not quite, t is t and d is d, you can check the 2010 3 kingdoms TV show to find out the Chinese prononciation of the names. the point is, due to the early pinyin systems, many “d” sounds are mistakenly translated as “t”, such as Taoism/Daoism, which has always been pronounced as “Dao” in Chinese.

At the age of 23 he killed the local magistrate and fled into the woods. 5 years later he reappears, now deadly with the blade, and joins Liu Bei's army. He had to acquire those skills somewhere. Early stories paint him as a Robin Hood-esque figure, roaming the lands in the interim. So it's a logical conclusion.
@-Zevin-
@-Zevin- 5 жыл бұрын
@@codybonds Except it's stated absolutely nowhere in the romance of the three kingdoms or the records of the three kingdoms that he was a bandit. He met Liu Bei after he fled from killing a local magistrate yes, but it was portrayed as more of a vigilante crime. In the Moss Roberts translation published by the Beijing foreign press it says, and i quote "I am from Jieliang in Hedong, but i had to leave there after killing a local bully who was persecuting his neighbors" *Making the leap from Guan Yu killing a corrupt or immoral official described as a bully to him violently attacking or murdering innocent people to take their stuff is a leap that i entirely disagree with.* A leap of logic that again isn't supported by any written records fictional or historical. With banditry being entirely antithetical to Guan Yu's persona and legend. For the record I like the series of videos going over the legendary figures from the Romance of the Three kingdoms. Anything to spread the knowledge and love of this wonderful work of historical fiction is a great thing, but a seemingly small issue like this i feel deeply misrepresent a really important figure such as Guan Yu, I wouldn't take issue if it was about a irrelevant side character. He isn't just a minor figure from a old novel but someone who is found in statues and in the homes of millions of people From China, to Korea, Thailand, Japan etc. I say this as someone who used to live in Asia, where my father in law had a 5 foot tall bronze statue of Guan Yu in his dining room. Calling him a bandit is a insult, and unsupported by reason or record.

Records of the Three Kingdoms was written by someone who lived and survived that period. The author was originally an official of Shu-Han before Jin took over, hired him, and had him write a history of that period. It is the most definitive account of the events of that period and formed the basis for the "Romance" novels to be written over a thousand years later. Kind of like how we have historical records of the Greek-Persian Wars from survivors of that period and ended up with Frank Miller's 300 as a comic book and then as a movie.
