As a player of the European lute and guitar, I am absolutely enthralled and humbled by the modern Chinese pipa technique. It is natural, strong, precise, fast, and dynamic.

I have always been amazed by the pipa playing techniques. It is arguably the best developed Chinese instrument. One can even play tremolos on two strings that I have yet heard of on a guitar. The only drawbacks: 1. lacking of the base sound so it is hard to play company well for singers. 2. requiring players to raise the left shoulders often - unbalanced posture can cause health problems. 3. limited repertoire - especially the modern ones. - just my 2 cents..

@IsaacTheGuitarist the nails shd flick outward when playin the pipa.Tis is the corr way to play a pipa.As the strings for pipa is vry flexible and soft, when u pluck the strings,the strings can easily snap when you strum too hard on the strings:)

I've heard that called the Hong Kong style--is that accurate? I studied with Min Xiao-Fen, a very modern player. Who is your teacher?

so, with the thumb, do you go back on the string the opposite way from the fingers?

yeah, guitar strings are too close and frets are too low--pipa takes alot of work to learn! Flamenco technique is similar, but the finger rolls start with the pinky and go reverse of pipa.
