Live 12 on Standalone Push is here!

This week Ableton dropped Live 12 for the standalone Push 3, a few weeks after releasing 12 on desktop. It brings some interesting changes to the push, but is it a really substantial upgrade?

Hi Dylan! If you have to choose between the Ipad with Logic Pro Vs Ableton Push3 standalone with Ableton Suite, what would you pick of those 2? i have a dilemma about those 2 and i have a hard time to choose the right one for me. I am waiting for your answer Thanks!

If I already had live suite and a computer that could run it, I’d choose Ableton push 3 vs iPad and logic. If I didn’t have either it would be a trickier choice for sure

Thank you! I record the audio out of the headphone out to a zoom h1 audio recorder and manually sync the audio by matching a note hit on a pad in the video with the sound in the recording

If you already have Ableton suite and you are okay being tethered to a computer: push 3 controller. If you don’t have Ableton and prefer keys, MPC Key 37

Cool video. I bought my push 3 on impulse and need to start using it a little more often. Made a lot of unfinished tracks when I first got it but have mainly been working in live using my PC the last couple of months. I do like how my beats end up being a little different for better or worse due to the push forcing me start by experimenting in session view. Nice beat btw!

My advice is to start taking notes while you’re using the push in standalone, give yourself a checklist of presets you wanna make on the desktop

Not in standalone no, only Ableton plugins

I really dig standalone units(I have a Live ll & Maschine+) but the Push seems to be a little bit involved and still have some quirks. What I haven't heard anyone talk about is if can you load your own samples into it. Plus considering cost of the unit and upgrades for HD doesn't really make it feasible for me. Extra points for the Evangelion tee!!

Oh you can definitely load your own samples into it! You can sample directly or just import whole file and folder structures from your computer. But if you already have live 2 and Maschine plus im not sure it’s worth it if it’s not something that immediately appealed to you

Man I really don't understand why they don't allow for creating instrument/effect racks. You can group tracks, so I feel like it's just a matter of shift functions, or something. Same with mapping macros once you're there. There is a M4L LFO you can use map to whatever parameter you want in standalone, which is one step closer haha. I feel like they'll eventually have to include that, but as you've said in another video, it's best to buy something for what it already is, not what you hope it might be updated to later.

Made the opposite change… I prefer to work on the Live 2 for sure but the thing that made me leave was the very limited LFO routing options and really did not like any of the effects. But I honestly keep thinking about switching back to it… sort of sad though because I had the retro model which I vastly preferred. Oh well.

I’m not sure I’d say that, you can do quite a bit on it without using a computer. That said, compared to the MPC, Force, and Maschine Plus, it’s definitely behind when it comes to making full finished songs in standalone

You can hit Shift+Rec to record an Arangement, don't you? Push 2 can do it, so I think push 3 can too.

That Push 3 sucks! It has a weak Intel 3 chip, 11th generation! No power! Buy an iPad with an Akai APC 3 and you'll have much more power and still be able to export Korg Gadget 3 to Ableton Live without any issue!

I disagree on the push 3 sucking to be honest. I’ve not had any major issues on a technical level with it. I think it has enough power for a machine designed only for this one function. If I could only have the push 3 or an iPad (for music specifically), I’d probably choose the push 3

Ohh! Wow! I do respect your opinion. I had a PC with an I3 Intel chip and I suffered a lot! I then upgraded to a Lenovo PC Laptop with a i7 12th Gen chip plus Intel ARC 370 sound card and have done so much better. So my question to you is, if Push 3 is supposed to be a Standalone device (sampling capabilities), would it not be better with a better Intel Chip? At least an Intel 5 processor?

@mcdan2696 good question! So most computers use active heat management (moving fans) to disperse heat. The reason the maschine plus and the push 3 use lower power chips is to prevent heat build up. More powerful chips would require larger chassis or active cooling or both. For some people that may have been the better choice, but for me I prefer the profiles of these devices. And I have yet to find a plugin in Ableton suite that I can’t run on the push, but if that happens I might change my mind
