Hot take: Benecio Del Toro in Reptile/Teyana Taylor in A Thousand and One were sleepers that I knew didn't have a chance, but I thought they both killed those roles despite how the films were received. Another fun video dudes. Here for the Oppen-shade lol. Thanks!

PISSED Charles Melton did not get a nomination. His performance haunted me for days. They got the whole category wrong. Also sad that both female leads were overlooked for May December. Ruffalo will hopefully win.

Downey is the front runner so no Ruffalo ain't winning. Gosling and Downey definitely benefited from their movies' blockbuster success cuz Charles and Defoe should have also been recognized. Or Dominic Sessa for the Holdovers or the Blackberry actor were all more deserving on merit alone but looks like most voters probably haven't seen Blackberry.

Sandra Hueller was absolutely BRILLIANT in Anatomy of a Fall!! I really hope she wins and upsets the 2 frontrunner! It was such a tricky well calibrated performance where she was in almost every scene and had to run every gamut of emotions! I feel it should really be between Hueller and Stone.

Nick and Joseph I so agree with you guys about RDJ and Emily Blunt. Their performances were okay but far from extraordinary. This is coming from a RDJ and Oppenheimer fan. Also Joseph I completely concur that Taraji outshined everyone else in "The Color Purple." Granted I haven't seen either film yet. But from what I've been told "Saltburn" and "All of Us Strangers" being completely unrecognized is shocking. I was expecting some huge surprise considering the fierce competition. Yet that never materialized.

The fight in Anatomy didn't feel entirely real to me, but that feeling made complete sense because of the context. When we learn that he may have picked the fight for "research", the way he fights makes way more sense. She's fighting for real, but he's fighting like he's on a reality show.

I like the score from American Fiction. The composer did a good with layering musical texture to the film. It's more than background music. The character's name Thelonious "Monk" Ellison which is a nod to jazz music, Monk, the jazz pianist and Ralph Ellison was also a jazz crited, played the trumpet and studied music at Tuskegee before becoming a writer.

It Never Went Away from American Symphony had an IMPACT on ME....I downloaded the entire Jon Batiste collection after that awe inspiring cancer film . . .I watched Late Night with Colbert somewhat regularly but it was not until that film that I gave him a chance. What a cool Christian dude!

I read an article last year about the original song category and how folks are upset that the songs that usually win are generic "overcome obstacles with love" or the song has almost nothing to do with the film. I'd really like to see either Barbie song win, because I thought they both related well to the movie.

Big fan of your reviews, am directed to films when I see you’ve reviewed something (Society of the Snow for eg) and I’ll come here once I’ve seen a film. I agree re Huller, she is the best of the actress bunch however Gladstone will win it. I hope Zone of Interest comes through in some categories, agree, especially sound - it was extraordinary. I loved Giamatti in Holdovers but he plays the same character as Sideways and Cillian Murphy seems to be the favorite. I’ve not seen Oppenheimer yet as I’m not a big fan of lots of talk. I also have held back on Poor Things as I generally dislike the esoteric and absurdity of the director’s films, but I will see it eventually - especially based on your rave reviews. Barbie was not to my style, and while I really enjoy Gerwig as an actress, not so much as a director. Thanks for your reviews!

It's been seriously tarnished by Armie Hammer's behaviors and public image nightmare, but "Call Me By Your Name" was a film where the music was completely integral to the film. I don't think that film would work without the particular songs they used for key moments. They really do make the film what it is.

I love some of Yorgos Lanthimos work, but specially in his later work, he annoys me the same way González Iñarritu does. Because there's points in their movies where they put themselves as the main characters instead of the story, it's like they draw attention to what they can do, instead of serving the movie. In that sense, Oppenheimer show more restrain than other aclaimed auteurs. Even during the trinity test, Nolan does more with the sound than with visual effects or that giant Imax screen. You should watch The Eternal Memory, the chilean documentary. And Greta Lee and Glenn Howerton where done dirty.

It's overrated but fun. I can see why people like it. I'm still surprised it got nominated for the Oscars though since they usually snub comedies. Barbie kind of reminds me of Elf. A naive character goes out into the real world and shines a light on society with a lot of laughs.

Storytelling elevates acting. The Color Purple “reimagining” felt like a “remake” that we didn’t need. The performances in the musical were good but not outstanding. The original film was a once in a lifetime film/cast that we don’t deserve. The film was a first for many actors/comedians that were not well-known for their acting at the time. The musical will always be in the shadow of the original. I agree with Joseph the “Taraji” truth train backfired on any other possible acknowledgments that this film could have received. Let’s be honest in 2024, people don’t need much to set Oprah on fire. The Oprah hate bled into people not wanting to watch the film. In reality many people weren’t going to see it anyway. I believe that Da’Vine Joy should win best supporting. Danielle was fun, but I didn’t have the connection to her plight in the same manner in which I had to Oprah’s portrayal of Sophia. I shed a tear when she thanked Celie for her support but her portrayal sometimes made me forget how disruptive this woman’s life was. Her portrayal seemed more comedic. I liked America’s monologue but it didn’t wow me in the same way in which other famous monologues have. Take the monologue away, America wouldn’t have been as memorable. If you think about it, America’s connection with Barbie, felt like Joy in the animated movie inside out trying to bring happiness to the little girl.
