Amid high housing costs and a weak economy, some Bay Area residents are deciding to live full time on boats. So-called live-aboards are attracted by the relative affordability of a home on the water. WSJ's Chris Kievman reports

I lived on a boat for a year - winter and summer. It was glorious but far from cheap. All expenses considered, it was higher than apartment living in this area - suburbs of NYC.

I do hope this is going to become more popular really soon, I went from living in a large house, keeping two extra bedrooms heated and cooled, a two car garage, and lots of money spent on lawn care, ridding mowers. After getting injured on duty I soon lost my house but with lots and lots of research I do believe that having a minimalist view could make things better for everyone, like fulltime RV's, or live aboard boats just to name a few.

Living aboard for us was far more expensive than living ashore. Most people only look at the mortgage and slip fees when considering this lifestyle. You also have to consider the high cost of insurance and the astronomical cost of maintenance. Having said that, it is the greatest lifestyle ever.

Does the marina in San Rafael have a liveaboard limit?? I know most of the bay area marina's are pretty tight about how many liveaboards they allow.

just because you live on a boat doesn't mean you have to live in a marina there are a lot of options open to you that don't cost money. like anchor out and use a dink to go back and forth for supplies or what ever you need to do.

Hate? I didn't mention hate. I never been to an area in this country that didn't have RV facilities within driving distance...must be a unique place. Bay area has many places on other side of bridge.I have been there.He mentioned being homeless no me. Thinking that people should be responsible for there procreation is not out of bounds.

Hoax how? I know several people who live on boats and looking into it myself. Owning and living on a boat in a lot of areas is cheaper and safer than living is most areas I could afford on land.
