Always listened to Shapiro and mostly ignored Klavan and Knowles. Started listening to some Knowles recently, he's okay, really smart but not always TOO interesting. But Klavan, man he firstly has a very enjoyable voice, and a good personality, and a good delivery, and of course a great thought process. I like that he stays kind of neutral and keeps the priority in communicating to everyone who is listening, not pandering to a specific crowd like even the great Shapiro does in some ways. It is good to speak as if you are speaking to people who don't already agree with your views. Klavan keeps to that very well compared to most speakers.

Same here. I have been listening to Shapiro since last yr, and the show only had about 200k subs. I ignored the other hosts.. 1 night I was bored and listened to Klavan. Wow! Good stuff. The man has his morals, has his views, believes what he believes, but will LISTEN to everyone! And that is what I immediately identified with. I believe what I believe, and think what I think, BUT, I want to know WHY you think what YOU think, and learn from it. Let's have an intelligent conversation!

I think Ben is the most entertaining, even when he's not trying to be. Something in his delivery or something, and I enjoy getting the lawyers perspective which you can pick up on. While I appreciated Drew's show, and he does have some great opening monologues, my brain doesn't find it as entertaining as Ben's show, though he will provide more profound knowledge then Ben gives. I've been listening to Knowles hear and there, but there's only so much time in the day. Love Crowder also, listen to all his stuff.

At about 55:50 the questioner asks about a study that says that, according to their question states that a person "needs to make around $70k to have basic happiness". I really felt the need to address this as the study actually says that $70k is the THRESHOLD for happiness. Meaning that up to $70k per annum, a raise might well improve your quality of life, reduce stress and all that good stuff. After that threshold though, it is unlikely that more money will make you happier. You can buy more things, or try new experiences; but it doesn't mean you will be happier. This distinction is important because he makes it sound as though one needs AT LEAST $70k per year to be happy, which is not the case. In fact a person can be happy and content at any income level. Just thought it was a worthwhile distinction.

Sure are a lot of white kids who believe "we" should do more to remedy century old injustices to blacks. I'd suggest "we" can make a great start by having them donate their academic spot and tuition to one of those folks "we" treated so unjustly. Because I'm a good person for thinking it, and they're bad people for not doing it.

Andrew Klavan, I think, as a writer tries to draw out a conversation from the other person. This QnA style of only 2/3 minutes for a question, and expecting something definitive, does not seem to suit his style. I think he left some questions too open ended. Clearly, Klaven was not there to beat up some college kids; he is rather trying to make sense and reason together. Some questioners might go out thinking, they got him; or that Klavan is not very sharp. But a little later, you would long for this kind of conversation. Not many people would have the time or humility to enter into a conversation.

Andrew, you gave them the key to happiness, and most of what I heard from the questioners was serious unhappiness because of what others are doing. Whites want to solve problems for blacks??? They don't even understand how racist this is. The shadow of slavery, why? Slavery is no longer in live memory. The black individual must do this for himself/herself. If I, as a white cannot understand them, what is being said, that I should learn to think like a black? How sad are all these whites who are unhappy because they think black people have to be helped - because they are helpless! They did not increase my respect for Hobart U at all.

To answer the black gentleman - even if his statistics are true, the statistics were taken under the system we have which includes affirmative actions programs and so forth. I would argue that if his statistics are true, it is BECAUSE of all of the affirmative action and welfare programs which have created the current negative black culture, not despite them. I realize that anecdotes are only marginally useful, but there is a native american tribe - I don't recall which one - whose tribal leaders approached the government and told them that they no longer want to receive reparation programs from the american government as they believe that it is keeping their people dependent instead of actually helping them. Within 10 years, they became one of the most wealthy tribes and had done the most to integrate into american society. It sounds counter-intuitive, but if you want blacks to succeed, we need to stop affirmative action programs and get a welfare program that is designed to encourage self-sufficiency instead of the dependency trap we have now.
@philrobertson2705
@philrobertson2705 6 жыл бұрын
Native Americans do not recieve money from the government. Some have casinos that pay taxes to the states they reside in and pay a small percent of the profits to their tribal members. Other than that, they have the same benefits (or lack of them) as any other US Citizen. The only "difference" is that if they live on tribal lands they pay no individual federal taxes (I don't think they pay state taxes but I may be wrong). I read somewhere the most any individual Native American received from their tribes casino operations was $12K/year. That's not exactly a windfall. However, the The Cobell lawsuit was a land reparations lawsuit won by the Blackfeet and cost the US government several billions much of it paid to individual tribal members.

Eric Bess Yup, enjoyed your comment. Welfare programs provide financial incentive for single motherhood, and state dependency. Also physical buse rates are higher statistically in fatherless homes, physically abused children on average are 7 points lower in IQ(I can't remember the citation so feel free to ignore this point). Both fatherless homes and abuse have pretty strong correlation with incarceration rates. You take all of these factors into account and it seems that state facilitated bad decisions snowball into a highly dysfunctional living conditions for anyone regardless of race.

Early in the speech, Klavan mentioned how, when movies make us cry, we come out of the movie saying, "That was a great movie!" Now I'm convinced there is something emotionally *wrong* with me, because I have *never* been like that in all my life. When a movie, or a book, or whatever, makes me sad enough to *cry* about it, it's not cathartic, and it doesn't make me feel better. I can cry myself *dry* if I want, but the thing that made me sad is still stuck in my head and making me miserable no matter what. There is no purging of emotions for me. Tears or no tears, I can't get them out, and there's nothing for me to do but wait for the pain to go away on its own.

Sometimes Klavan buys into leftist paradigms. "White people were miserable to black people.." except that: 1) it was one percent of white southerners that owned slaves, so most people never benefited from slavery in any way 2) 33% of black southerners owned slaves, which I don't think their descendants should be punished for 3) Most black people who are here right now are not descended from slaves, but from immigrants so if some "black people" suffered slavery and reparations are to be made, it's to those who are descended from slaves, not the majority of blacks 4) Jews, Irish, Italians all suffered at the hands of the populace (especially Irish who were also enslaved) and they managed to become productive members of society and don't need reparations 5) Even the illegal Mexicans are able to get by without consuming the same percentage of government obtained resources that the current black populace does... 6) For the last 30 years white people were far more likely to suffer rape and/or other violence at the hands of black people than blacks do at the hands of whites... So even if you are to judge whites as a group against blacks instead of people as individuals, I don't think that black skinned people are owed anything.

I expect to see all of these white kids that are stricken with grief over being white serving their community tomorrow by getting their hands dirty and going into a black neighborhood and volunteering their time so that they might ease their suffering by doing some work about it rather than taking the low road and encouraging change through coercive means by forcing people through government rather than appealing to people's hearts and minds. It is really about power rather than sincere concern over one's well being and individual responsibility for self actualization.

I think this video shows way the "Klavan-Shapiro"-kind of conservatism can't work. It is all beautiful ideas. And if they were implemented as they describe them we would be in a great place. But the questions show how the desire not to say true things that today are considered offensive leads into a dead end. Most questions by the kids were entirely motivated by the need to appear good and virtuous. All the time the kids were talking about the legacies of past racism that need to be overcome, the need to make laws to protect transgender people and all the rest of the intersectional bull shxt. And Klavan tried to play the nice guy and he drowned. I don't think that he has convinced the kids in the room. His hesitation to say "if blacks want to be in charge, they need to accept also the responsability; and if the Italians, Irish, Polish, Germans etc have managed then certainly the 13% blacks can succeed as well; and it is totally and completely racist to argue that they should be the only ones who need help." Only if everyone agrees on this point of view, can racism ever be defeated. If people instead continue to spend their energy on finding excuses in the countries' history for today's failures of black men (the women aren't doing so bad after all), then black men will never make it. It's that simple. I think that Klavan has done more harm than good with his hesitant and overpolite attitude during the Q&A. The preceding speech was good. But without the necessary toughness he will not convince anyone. These kids will just continue with their disgusting virtue signaling race and celebrate their sophistry.

I get what you are saying but part of me has to disagree. Humans are interesting. The pursuit of truth and purpose cant be forced on someone. Finding truth requires am open mind and a longing to find it. If you dont have this desire or longing it doesn't matter what you say to someone. They will not care. Furthermore I believe being stern, or aggresive or whatever you may call it will actually cause more harm then good. Being combative with someone who isnt searching for the truth will just make them dig into their ideology because they can discredit you as a person for being aggressive and not deal with what you have to say. On the other hand if someone is searching for truth being aggressive might actually hurt them more than being calm and polite. Being supportive in someone's honest attempt of searching for truth is by far the best option if you truly want to change someone's mind. Now yes, you have to have a backbone and you cant be a pushover. Would take the time to hear a different perspective

Andrew is 1000% more educated than I am. That said, I could have answered those questions better than he did from a conservative stand point. Example, when the kid brought up the discrimination of the Irish...I would have brought up the success of Asians.

Dude, the kids are OBSESSED with race and so-called racism. Blacks continue to suffer economically due to the lack of fathers and the praise and promotion of criminal behavior, thru music and culture. And NO, poverty does not produced crime. Crime produces poverty. The other main issie is anger, fueled by continuously being told that whites are obsessively and relentlessly seeking to oppress them. This type of anger would hold anyone back. Great speech, Drew.

My goodness these people need to go to a country where people are actually being oppressed. I've been to Cuba and you could literally FEEL the oppression as get off the plane, drive through the cities, hear the people's story, seeing people just wandering around without purpose because of the government. I'm tired of hearing this victim hood mentality that is crippling people from pursuing their dreams. How is it not an insult? How is saying the only thing holding you back is the color of your skin? We have come far beyond that. There are no laws holding someone down because of skin color. America is not a place to be ashamed of.

So I have an experiment for people to try - go down to a highway (not a freeway because it's illegal to stand on the side of the freeway) and just watch the cars go by...Count the number of people that go by from each ethnic group. By and large, it is very difficult when you are simply watching cars to pay attention to anything about the driver. And remember that cars go even faster on the freeway. Now, I'm not saying that it never happens, but by and large, it is silly to think that people are getting pulled over based only on the color of their skin. They may or may not get treated differently once they are pulled over, but in terms of why they are being pulled over, the officers are paying attention to what you do as a driver, not what you look like. Statistics have shown that in areas where blacks are pulled over more than whites that it is because blacks in those areas are more likely to drive faster than the speed limit. It may be cultural, but it is not racial.

"It's harder to become successful if your are poor" ok, so the student says all poor people are black, or that all black people are poor? Both are not true.

I'm sorry Mr Klavan, but you're wrong about one thing. The USA didn't 'first nurture' these ideas he describes, the founding fathers inherited them from us Brits, and codified them brilliantly. But they aren't 'american exceptional ideas', they're British ideas our lovely US cousins inherited from us Brits. End. But I do love Mr Klavan.

America is the greatest nation in the world. Not inherently but because it empowers the individual. This is why I support the 2nd ammendment, not because you get to have fun with science but because the government is our bitch and we will NOT allow them to step out of line and start to tell the 99% of Americans how life and morality works.

I would like to hear Andrew Klavan's detailed answer to the following American race dilemma. This problem was pointed out by people like Lee Kuan Yew, and many others, including students in this video in their questions to Klavan. It goes as follows: (1) If groups of people are more or less equal in their aptitudes and capabilities, and (2) if there is no systemic oppression of these groups then (3) there should not be a sustained difference in socioeconomic outcomes. The fact that you observe (3) means either (1) or (2) is violated. The students here are saying that because we see (3) and (1) is unthinkable as an answer, it must be (2). Now I think Klavan will say there are cultural aspects in (1) that is the answer. For example, some cultures value education more than others, and some culture put a heavy emphasis on not having out of wedlock births and etc. I am half persuaded by it. I understand that culture matters, but there should be more thought into why these cultural aspects persist in certain groups and not in others. For example, Johnson's social welfare program is accused of destroying the black family, but why was it so harmful for the black community compared to others that were equally as poor? Even if you were able to convincingly show that there are identifiable cultural reasons for (3), how successfully can you persuade people that find themselves to be in a group that is at the lower end of the social ladder that the reasons for (3) is not (2)? The people in these groups will not accept the explanation, just like how Klavan was not able to persuade the students in this video.

Simple answer, the truth behind these issues goes against the dogma of cultural relativism and denial of racial/ethnic differentiation. Both of these are vital to leftist ideology and can't be criticised without threatening the questioners' belief systems, thus the conflict.

Doesn't every story of success in business, the arts, the military, academia, politics, etc. by a member of one of these minority groups prove that they are not oppressed ? They had the freedom to choose a path, and excelled. Is there not a rise over the last 30 years of the percentage of all sorts of jobs for these groups, helped by anti-discrimination laws? The American exception is that every person can choose their own way. In communist countries, your future is decided for you. There is no guarantee of success for anyone, and the truth is, as K points out, that we suck, and only hard work and good choices can make us better. Making excuses for one's failure, or worse, for the failure of others will only perpetuate the cycle of poverty.

17:19 - The bible says that there is no righteous man in the world who will do good and not sin. So righteous people also commit sins, and is spite of that, they are still righteous. How come? probably because there is such a thing as repentance that atones for sin and completely erases it so that once you repent the sin is gone.

Lestibournes Good deeds do not blot out the bad, nor the bad the good. If you strive, on balance, to do good in spite of your selfish desires then you are righteous. It is about the commitment to better yourself and your community that is the pinnacle of so called righteous actions. In order to think this you do also have to believe that it is in human nature to do evil that will benefit you in leiu of doing good that really won't benefit you in the short term.

To the girl in the purple sweater - its really easy to find unjustices in the world if you are willing to make them up...and I'm not saying she is the one that is making them up - I'm sure she has heard every one of these things she's talking about somewhere else, but this is exactly why people need to actually research what they hear instead of just buying into it because it fits some sort of narrative that they want to buy into. At least she says, "...it's not necessarily the law..." Well if it's not the law that has a problem and these things are actually happening, then let's prosecute a few people...if you do your research, you will find that when a cop kills anyone (black or otherwise), there is always an investigation. Sometimes, that results in the cop having charges filed against them...and sometimes it turns out that the person who got shot was doing something stupid and/or threatening to the officer.
