You guys taught me how to fish! Using the FINS method and the scientific method has greatly improved my results. I will try to repay the favor. For the last few years , I have gotten away from using treble hooks for Pike and Musky. Both for the fishes safety, as well as mine! While I see the benefits of the bridle and/or quick strike rig when fishing open water situations where you have to cast live or dead bait, I have been using a very different system through the ice with stellar results! Whether on a tip-up or dead stick, I tie a 3-4' 20# hard mono leader to my main line, then, a 6-8" piece of 18# single strand wire haywire twisted directly to a #6 short shank bait hook or salmon egg hook. (The size you might use for Walleye). The hook is placed directly into the thick cartilage under the dorsal fin of a large sucker. The rig is nearly invisible, especially compared to a bait tethered to two large trebles and heavy leader! My friend and I have landed hundreds of Pike and Tigers -up to 30# with this rig. Hook-up ratio is as high as any rig I have used and we have NEVER had a fish break off or get guthooked. -One of the tricks, is using baits that are big enough to force the fish to grab it sideways (Pike and Musky do this as a rule anyway), once the fish has the bait crosswise in it's mouth, the hook is right in the center, leading to a hook set right in the jaw. Give it a shot! You will get more bites because the bait stays livelier and fish aren't put off by a ton of terminal tackle, but the best part- no more cringing when you try to grab a thrashing fish with a bunch of hooks right where you want to put your hand!

Lots of empty trips I’m afraid. I’ve only caught 1 when I fished all year for one. If you’re a professional like these guys and have a nice boat it helps. You won’t forget that catch. It’s been 10 years and I still remember the strength of that fish! Good luck.

Do people use Circle hooks when using live bait for musky fishing? I am a saltwater guy and all i use is circle hooks, I’ve never missed a fish when they strike.

If you troll a lot, not just hanging or dragging suckers, the Shimano Tekota with line counter is hands-down the best freshwater line counter out there. I've been trolling almost exclusively for the last 20 years, that reel is the best without question. Diawa's aren't bad, but the Shimano is definitely the better reel, having used both.

The rubber band doesnt work very good. I did that 15 years ago. If the rubber band is too tight it will kill the sucker, if its too loose the hook doesnt stay in position...

not a fan of where you're positioning the hooks on the livebait. Prefer one through dorsal fin muscle and one at pec fin muscle

Are you saying when Musky fishing rather than using the most effective method one should use the most challenging technique reserved only for the most skilled? Like jigging with a 360 search bait tipped with a hot dog hanging from a drone?
