Our vagabond 42 has a solid Taiwanese hull. We were T-boned by a 48 foot Greenliner moving about 5 knots while we were anchored out. It broke our cap rail and separated our hull deck joint. The hit would have easily sank the Beneteau we used to own. Love my 40 year old piece of junk ;)

Keep pissing off those that want production boats to be blue water boats. I started pissing them off in 1988 after skippering a First 51 from Gibraltar to Antigua. I wouldn’t sail another one out of sight of land. I have over a dozen ocean crossings. My brother got me into Prout catamarans, last one was a Quasar51. I did 6 Atlantic crossings and raised a family on it. When we sailed the Southern ocean, we did it in a South African built 60’ steel catch. We also owned an Oyster 45, loved that boat. People need to learn to use the right tool for the job at hand. Keep pissing people off, you will save some lives.

By Columbia 10.7 is a very heavy laid-up glass hole made in 1979. It is absolutely flawless as far as blisters go. It is just cleaned and spotless and couldn't be a better shape. Top that I've added a bunch of extra things to improve it. Even better to make it more super early like a skag. I'm even thinking about encapsulating the bolt on keel
@SalingSamantas8 күн бұрын
I like John kretchmer's theories on good offshore boats. He always says something between 75 and 85 solid Glass keel step skeg hung rudder preferably not a bolt-on keel, but it's not necessarily a deal-breaker. Most of my research when I did my boat was from sailboat data. I'd surf around see what was available for sale and then I would go check out specs on sailboat data and just go down the rabbit hole and that's how I found my sailboat. I love this format of your videos lately James, the educational stuff. It's been great. I appreciate it

Its a free world in the US when it comes to Maritime, here in New Zealand, a NZ flagged vessel cannot leave offshore without seeking approval from Maritime NZ, this certificate is required and given once an official comes to see your boat and is "satisfied" that it meets all specs and regs to sail offshore, I sold my Sabre now looking at either AU or the US for my next boat and bring it down!

My decks are all brand new inside and out. Yes, they are plywood cores but they're brand new cores and I did a 2-in fiberglass patch around every penetration so theoretically shouldn't be an option for water to get to the core. Even if say the chain plates or the port lights leak it be hitting solid fiberglass and it shouldn't get to the plywood. But it's about. I imagine it will find a way eventually

Almost always people that don’t actually own a boat say old boats are trash. As a liveaboard cruiser they don’t build things like they used to unless you have a lot of money. Some people don’t have couple hundred thousand dollars to chase a dream. To me newer boats feel cheaper and I know will not stand up to the test of time. Lighter boats make faster movements and are much noisier. It’s your boat buy what you want…
@qscmplx8 күн бұрын
From a Dutch perspective; boats like the Breehorn and Victoire are Koopmans designs too, and decent seaworthy boats. It makes me wonder how many good local boats go under the radar if you aren't familiar with the local sailing scenes. Things like Rogers' Contessa for the UK, there's probably a host of others. They do however have bolt on keels as far as I know. I ended up buying a v933 years ago because I can comfortably single hand it, and it has a big community here with a wealth of knowledge. She's probably a bit snug for most folks, though, especially long term cruisers.

James - how much would a delivery captain cost to bring a purchases boat from the med to the cheapest place across the Atlantic (US or Caribbean ?)
@thelastpirate7 күн бұрын
Good question. Delivery captains usually charge $3/mile or $500/day - depending on the captain. Plus airfare. The trip from Med to Carib is easy, you can do it!

It's very difficult to find real teak. There's lots of so-called teak lumber out there, but it's not realty actual proper teak of the correct genus is like $70 a foot even if you can find it exceptionally hard to find at least where I am

You and "Sailing with Thomas" have completely different extreme views about the value of "modern" boats. He's 100% all in to "modern" grid system hulls, and you're... well not. It would be great to see a conversation between you two. I suppose a modern aluminum boat is the best choice as its fast and can survive impacts. Unfortunately they're expensive and so not really available to the average person. One thing I'm very interested in is how bad the "pounding" is with the modern flat bottom boats. I'm older and my wife isn't a "boat person". I don't think a modern "racer/cruiser" is appropriate for us since they'll be very uncomfortable in certain seas, and if the pounding is bad enough, maybe my wife won't ever want to do another long passage. I want to "sail to far away places", and not just do coastal cruising.
@thelastpirate7 күн бұрын
If your cruising style is “sailing away to far away places” you’re going to want something strong with enough weight and forefoot to handle the waves. I’ve explained the dynamic many times. There are other reasons as well not to get the grid built boats, they’re fragile, don’t handle groundings, etc.
