I'm very grateful for Emp and his documentary. I was a competitive in 2005~2009 Puff-only player in Smash 64 here in Brazil, but, since our country is too big and had very few competitive players, all the competition happened online via Kaillera. I've always had the impression of Melee being too fast for what is human possible to be played on, so I never got interested in Melee on my whole life. The documentary exposed Melee and Hungrybox to me, and I never felt so represented. I've always been a Puff main and in my whole history with smash (skipped melee and brawl but i'm also Puff only on 4/ultimate), i got all the hatred possible by playing puff. Because yeah, i've did camping, i've played super defensively and would only resort to "cheap" things like simple f-throw jump rest. People made fun of me, took some pictures of myself and edited so i looked like shit, and all that kind of bad stuff. In response i've always acted very aggressive towards everyone on the community. I never reached the top like HBox, but it was like watching myself but instead of melee, it was on smash 64. I'm a player that stick to a character or class forever, the same way HBox does with Puff. No surprise that the documentary made me cry. Now I have a much more interests on melee and i'm binge watching videos about Melee and HBox in general. It's so satisfying to know that there is actually champions that stood out against the "sick" players and became a number 1 with a character considered so lame, boring, bad, weak. Like HBox i've became to play Jigglypuff only on a random day that i've discovered how rest worked. Before that i was a Link player, once i've understood how strong Rest actually was, my love for puff was born. Everyone disrespected puff here early on, and winning them all never felt so satisfying.

Melee makes no sense because Nintendo doesn't make any revenue from it. You know, the thing everyone loves to say when emulating old games. Ultimate would make sense, but I feel like Epic would still benift more in e-sports because of all the MTX Fortnite has. Still, they should still make more of an effort with Ultimate.
@louistwo65244 жыл бұрын
I am willing to suggest the disconnect is made by the harsh fact Melee’s competitive community aren’t kids, even though evidently they act like kids a whole lot. Nintendo has a hard time trying to differentiate itself between a consumer electronics corporation, a video game company, and a toy company, so they probably want more children playing smash bros, and they more importantly want people to embrace its own goal for anything-goes casual play. True to Nintendo they branch out a little and then break things down when they just don’t like them so the corporate ethics and tactics are always a mixed bag.

Hello Hungrybox (maybe I should call you Juan, because that's your name after all, but you don't know a thing about me, so let's keep polite and not get familiar). I've always kept an eye on the Melee scene, and the one thing I never understood was the hatred you've been through. First let me tell you that, being on my way to become an engineer down there (am French tho), I respect you so much for what you've achieved. Becoming that good on a video game while studying then being an engineer (even though it's chemistry and Oh God I don't like that lol) is incredible, and just by that you deserve all the respect you never had. But the fact that you overcame all the difficulties and that you made it to the top is just huge. Even more when your own dad used to tell you things such as "You'll be good but you'll never be the best". I mean, it would probably discourage me enough to let anything down and just get back to a life where nothing matters to me. All this said, let me tell you that you are awesome, (handsome too, it's important to mention it ^^') and that I hope you'll have what you deserve in life, because your struggled so hard that, in a dreamed world, everything should be easy now. An anonymous who just admires you as a human.

@@aladdinde3191 I didn't say I see it as boring, I said that the majority of the audiences love the aggresive playstyles of DPS characters generally. Unfortunately, people generally rather see entertainment through flashy things instead of skill, this not only goes for smash, but sports as well. Otherwise, I do agree with you

I vaguely knew of Melee competitions befor Emp’s video. Now I’m worried it’ll overtake my studying XD

EmpLemon's documentary was insanely good. Video randomly popped into my feed, usually I ignore stuff like that, but I played Melee casually so I figured I'd give it a watch. Was not disappointed.

I got into competitive Smash and watching your streams from this documentary. I'm going to my first regional event later this month. Maybe I'll bust out a drill rest with Puff :) Thanks EmpLemon/Hbox!!!

I found out about Hungrybox through EmpLemon. Dude had it rough from the get-go. Even though I didn't know about you up till now, I'm cheering you on, my dude. You can always get better and I know you will.

Great vid. Also, Emp, thank you for all the amazing content, as always. I can't thank Digibro enough for recommending your channel. The high praise he gave your videos turned out to be entirely warranted, and I can't wait to see what you'll put out next.

This vid is what introduced me to melee and is probably why hbox became my favorite player right away

I like how EmpLemon sounds exactly the same when he's talking normally as in his videos. Gives an air of authenticity to everything he makes.

I'll be real; I'm here for more Emp, never been a big fan of Smash in general even. Still, Hungrybox seems like a cool dude and if I ever do want to get into watching some matches, I'll probably stop here first.
