Hi Sofia. Very nice to see your cooking method. I have some alcool di grano I use to make Lemoncello. This one works? By the way, in Portuguese we say Banho Maria e the soundpost is alma. Almost like in Italian.. 😂😊 Thank you for sharing!

Our languages are so similar!! And so much poetic 🎶✨ Yes! The grain alcohol will be absolutely perfect! It is the one we use also in Italy! It dissolves the ingredients amazingly 🙌

Hi, I'm Brazilian, maybe the translation isn't correct lol, congratulations on the very explanatory video... just one question, what do you use to pigment the colors with alcohol varnish?
@violinmakingwithsofiavettori2 күн бұрын
Good question! I only use natural pigments: like Brazilian wood, cocciniglia and mudder lake!

Hello Sofia thank you for demonstrating this. Do you dissolve the spike oil and shellac together, before putting in the Elemi? I have made 1704 spirit before, your recipe contains a little more Elemi and Spike oil. I’m guessing this will make it easier to apply with the brush. Once again thank you for sharing your family recipe.

Hi! Yes it is very very similar to the 1704, but a bit easier to apply 🙌 I put everything together and then I cook, exactly how I showed in the video! If you feel you will benefit from following my step by step method, I suggest you to look at this page! It will explain all my varnishing course and after so many violinmakers professionals and amateurs got so much success I can confidently say that it is an AMAZING tool!!! 😊❤️ www.sofiavettori.com/spirit-varnish/ Let me know what do you think! Hi Sofia, is it methylated spirits in Australia? Absolutely wonderful video once again. Thank you for being so generous with your incredible knowledge. 🤗🎻
@violinmakingwithsofiavettori8 ай бұрын
Hi Adrian! It is more the spirit that you can cook with. It is less dangerous for your health. You know I like to use non toxic materials for my varnish. I double checked in Australia and you can find the Everclear brand alcohol They might call it Ethanol as well

Ciao Sofia! Thank you for this video recipe. I have Elami in my lab, but it looks more like a kind of a heavy demi soft wax, not so cristalline to be chopped in the mortar. So, my question is: do exist different qualities of elami or my one is exipired? Thanks for you answer
@violinmakingwithsofiavettori7 ай бұрын
Hi Stefano! This is really a good question and I was thinking at this thing exactly wile I was applying my varnish. I had a flash back into my workshop on Florence and remembered that the Elemi was goopy and soft, not so cristalline . This Elemi that I am using belonged to my husband that bought it 20 years ago. The clima here is very very dry half of the year and this maybe made it dry? I have to buy new one now, as I finished it and I will see how it will look like and share with everyone! To be able to smash it with the mortar was making the dissolving part faster for sure. One think that I can tell is that the feeling of the Elemi (the biggest pieces) in the varnish wile Cooking was the same as the one in Firenze. Thanks for this interesting question and I will keep an eye open to see if we can find more answers!

What is added to give the brown tint. Didn’t see anything in the recipe you offered. Thanks another helpful video

Great question! The dark color is made from the darker shellac! It is very interesting how different types of shellac can make a different varnish base color!

Are you sharing the varnish recipe? I’d like it. How concerned are you about the varnish catching fire? Thanks, i love your videos.

Hi! Good question. 🙋 I never leave the varnish unattended wile cooking and it really takes like 15 minutes. Cooking with “Bagno maria” the jar reaches the temperature, without boiling! If you look the video till the end I share the recipe with the exacts ingredients. If you are willing to learn all my method from A to Z, then this is the place to go! You will LOVE it 🙌 www.sofiavettori.com/spirit-varnish/

the alcohol you mean ( i guess) is Ethyl Alchol dentaured 99% ( ETHYL ALCOHOL DENAT. 99.9) ? is that correct Sofia?, oh and question, so, before all this, you do wood preparation (egg white, to prevent varnish going into the wood)?
@violinmakingwithsofiavettori5 ай бұрын
Great questions! This type of alcohol is called grain alcohol, spirit. And yes! I do prepare the wood before applying the varnish formula! It is very very important 🙌 If you want to learn all the steps this is a good place to go: www.sofiavettori.com/spirit-varnish/
