As a US citizen, i am currently in the process of getting my Greek Golden Visa, we purchased a property in Lefkakia in the countryside of Nafplio in time to be able to spend $250,000. We were lucky to get our deposit and contract done before the end of August because now the requirement is $400,000 minimum.

as a greek allow me to answer although you can find lots of places this info but maybe is not easily accessible in english or other languages, when you start at any legal job in greece in the private sector you pay contributions through your work meaning that you dont actually see those contributions in your bank account that are like half being put by the workplace and half by you automatically to the pension - healthcare system. Those contributions are being seen if you go to IKA-EFKA offices all over greece and ask for an analytical status or see them online in the related goverment websites. Also in your salary notice every month that the employer gives you, you will see exactly how much is going to IKA-EFKA and how much to your bank account. This pension - healthcare system previously was called IKA now its called EFKA and you get with that a social security number called AMKA. Kinda the same to open a legal business entity(there are like several forms of legal entitites for which you need to speak to a greek accountant) but obviously those contributions are being paid by you. If the workplace wants to avoid bank accounts avoid them as well, cause that is illegal and its a way to avoid paying those contributions. If you want a calculator the best I have found is the aftertax dot gr that you input the monthly gross or net salary and automatically calculates those contributions for private work employees(not affiliated with them, just a nice easy calculator i use). As an example usually is like between 25 - 30% for those contributions of which of them around half goes to tax and half goes to the pension system(depends on your salary, for private sector workers). So for a 1400 euro salary net monthly that will equivalent to 1903 euro gross salary per month. Those contributions cover the public healthcare (hospitals, portion of the cost of medicine, portion of eyeglasses prescriptions (full portion or percentage depends on your economic family status or salary) etc.). Keep in mind this is the minimum, you can always opt for private healthcare insurance plans or generally private hospitals or as greeks do, go to private doctors for most of your needs and leave the public healthcare for emergencies. Kinda that is why most greeks when they talk about salaries they tend to talk with the net numbers of their salaries.

half the doctors left Greece when their salaries were cut by 50% when austerity measures were instituted a few years ago. Unless you are dying or having an emergency, be prepared to wait. Canada style. Or you can go for concierge practices which charge extra. Actually Turkey has cheaper and better health services and a well developed medical tourist industry. Also, dont forget, bureaucracy in Greece is an art form. Unless you are fluent, you will learn the meaning of Byzantine regulations through exasperation and perspiration.
