Viking Dude sings as well. Nightwish doesn't have a bad song. Just pick any song from October 2012 on and buckle up. Floor will sing backing for Marko, Emppu the guitarist will sit back and let Troy wail away. Tuomas the composer on the keys will sit back and play under all of the other instruments an entire song. This is probably their most “poppy” song - Romanticide is heavier, and you also get to hear Marco (the bassist) sing :D PS: The backing vocals you heard here (and in other songs), are prerecorded by a professional choir. The first singer Tarja, was great but always sang in operatic style. The second singer Anette, was a great singer but her voice was thinner and more pop orientated. Floor Jansen can sing everything she wants in every style she wants. She even growls. Future reactions on Nightwish...just pick songs from one of the live concerts at Wacken, Wembley and Tampere.

It's getting even wilder. You're in America reacting to a Finnish (not Swedish) band with a Dutch vocalist (but who lives in Sweden and is married to the drummer of Swedish metal band Sabaton) and a British member playing in Germany. Floor is Dutch (BTW, the pronunciation is just like "floor;" no flure or fleur required; the name means "flower", think Spanish flor), and Troy, the Brit, you haven't seen yet (plays Irish bagpipes, whistles, bouzouki, guitar, and occasionally sings). BTW, there are Nightwish Army members from as far afield as Namibia (Grüße nach Namibia!). They're also very popular in Latin America, and Floor has sung in her career in English, Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Italian, and Latin. It's a multicultural world...

The name is Floor Jansen (Yahn-sen) the Dutch queen of symphonic metal. Nightwish loves what they do and ae so happy to have Floor as their new singer. On record this was part of the backing track, however Floor wanted to sing this part live. Because she can! Those chills you got are what we Nightwish fans call a "Floorgasm"! Correction men, you are watching a Finnish band with a Dutch singer performing in Germany. Even better. Follow what Gabriel gave you for suggestions. You can't go wrong with anything from Wacken 2013. For something a little heavier try "Romanticide" or for something more Epic, check out "Ghost Love Score" both from this same show. Great reaction my Utahn friends. You will soon discover that Marko (the Viking) is also a very good singer. Floor wasn't even the permanent singer at this time, she was still filling in. I think the band asked her to make it permanent after the Buenos Aries show. I'm a mere private in the Nightwish Army. Started listening on and off around the time they transitioned to their second singer. Loved the music. Drifted away, though. Then about 18 months ago I saw Ghost Love Score from this same concert on a reaction video. Hooked. Instantly. I now watch NW (and other Floor Jansen) videos every single day, often for more than 2 hours, on and off. Some advice from a newbie turning fanatic: (1) Learn band member names as quickly as you can (first names especially as some of the last names are a little tough); (2) when you get a comment telling you to watch the rest of the Wacken show in a certain order (Likely from Gabriel), follow that list (every reactor I've seen who did so has specifically said they were enormously happy they followed the sequence); (3) do what you can to get caught up because individuals from the band are expanding outside the band, the latest album is huge and the follow-on tour will be atomic. We got you, brothers. Welcome. This is the legendary ride of a lifetime.

Fun fact: observe her command of that crowd, then realize that it's about 82,000 people at an annual metal music festival (NOT an exclusively Nightwish concert), so they're not all there to just see Nightwish...and yet she has them rocking out in the palm of her hand. I personally haven't seen that much crowd control since the late great Freddie Mercury. Floor is the Valkyrie Queen.

That bridge section where Floor sings along with the choir backing track was originally just a backing track (even on the studio version) because it was outside the range of the previous singer. That is one of many examples of how she has raised the overall quality of the band. She's turned out to be the missing piece that they (everyone but Tuomas) didn't really realize was missing until the timing finally worked out. Apparently Tuomas wanted her after they let Tarja go but Floor was happy with her band at the time. Having said that, both of the prior singers were excellent and deserve recognition for their contributions. You'll get tons of suggestions but for me the best place to start is anything else from the Wachen 2013 show.

I read that in an interview with Marko. He said she and her band mates were all close friends and the band was starting to take off, so they didn't have the heart to ask her to break all that up. It really shows the kind of people they are. They put Floor and her needs before what was best for them.

It's funny that you think this is their anthem. This is actually one of their more conventional songs. Oh you have no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes. You can watch just about anything from their Wacken 2013 performance and be just as blown away. I recommend 'Ever Dream' and 'Song of Myself'. Then try 'Ghost Love Score', 'Romanticide', and 'Ghost River'. Hell then just finish the whole show. Their great epics are 'The Poet and the Pendulum' (Wembley 2015), and 'The Greatest Show on Earth' (Wembley or Tampere 2015)... But you're not ready.

The drummer, Jukka, is a beast. One of the hardest hitting guys in metal. Sadly, after this tour he was struck down with chronic insomnia and couldn't continue to play with the band. He turned the reins over to his friend Kai Hahto, who has been playing with them ever since. But Jukka continues to work with the band in a business capacity. He has always been band's accountant.

It is interesting that the perhaps most important person of the band, Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, who writes their music and outstanding lyrics, is the least visible. Floor is a beast, plain and simple ! Standing way over six feet tall with heels on makes her a bona fide sword maiden. It is really wort paying attention to the lyrics.

Referring to the "add something to the live version" comment, that's exactly what she did with their Ghost Love Score at Wacken 2013 (one of their best performances, hands-down). GLS wasn't originally done that way, even live with the first singer, Tarja, but when Floor performed it she added her own thing at the end of the song (referred to as The Floorgasm) and it stuck. Now that vocal part is in demand by fans for every live performance of GLS since, and it cemented her position with the band and the fans as the Valkyrie Queen of Nightwish.

When this was recorded it was almost to the day 10 months since Floor did her first concert with Nightwish as their replacement singer after their second singer got fired in the middle of their world tour. When she arrived in the US she had 48 hours to learn the setlist before her first show. There's a documentary about that time here on KZbin "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" Officially Floor and Troy became full members a few months later, inofficially they where asked in July. You want an experience, just continue with the Wacken 2013 concert. The energy of the entire show is just way off the charts. :-) To continue down the rabbit hole, the next obvious stop would be the epic Ghost Love Score from Wacken as well (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIrNep9-jKd0jNE). I assume Gabriel was already here on your first video to recommend things, so you can pick from his list, his recommendations are good across the board. However, if I may, I'd like to suggest to keep two songs for later, Poet and the Pendulum and Greatest Show on Earth. These are really special masterpieces, and for the former in particular, many other KZbinrs who watched it say that getting to know Nightwish better beforehand has helped them appreciate the song even more. This may sound pretty ominous and intimidating, but don't worry, just go with it for the moment, you'll certainly be filled in with more background info in the comment section along your journey.

The story of Floor becoming a permanent member of Nightwish is really one from fairy-tales. Floor coming from a serious burnout and Nightwish for losing their lead vocalist. Nightwish saved floor and Floor saved Nightwish ❤️🤘

Everybody loves Floor! They had one concert when floor started in the band where only 2-3 people wanted refunds for their tickets out of thousands of people. And those few people clearly were just salty about the old singer being gone. But their fan base loves the whole band and not just the vocalist. Which is extremely important for the bands success. Floor has had her dream come true joining Nightwish and the band welcomed her with open arms and made her feel like she was home

This band is from Finland. Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer. Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this. Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song. Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums. Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well. Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013. It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year. Here are some suggestions for your next stops: -> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting -> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“, as you just experinced, and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones. -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-) -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.) -> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional) -> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, … -> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind. -> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *) ***** From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs. -->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself --> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it. --> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending. -> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“. -> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor --> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish. -> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice. --> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course. The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world. ***** If you'd like to Explore Floor on her own: Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on KZbin as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them. It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary. ***** * Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“ Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time. As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears. One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet. I have been a Nightwish fan for more than 20 years! I got there on my own ( Amazing being American!) ! Yes, LIVE is best! BUT DAMN it! Nightwish has never played close enough for me to see them live... Good thing there are videos LOL! Happy Thankgiving!

About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first couple of Nightwish reactions, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): "Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
