This is Jerry Hadley in his prime. Jerry Hadley (June 16, 1952 July 18, 2007) was a student of my teacher from 1978, after getting his masters degree in music from the University of Illinois in 1977. He then started teaching at the University of Connecticut. A 1993 article by Noël Goodwin in Opera magazine stated, "After 15 years Hadley still goes back to this Sicilian American who, he says, gave him confidence and secure knowledge of what he is doing with his voice at any given time, through teaching methods that are direct and physiological." Hadley also stated, "(I was) lucky above all else to have found a teacher in New York without whom I really doubt I could have really built the career I have." Here he displays wonderful balanced vocal registration and release of constriction which are the cornerstones of the technique that he learned and that I teach.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a lyric tenor should sing.

Jerry prepares the role on the arias so well we not only hear his great voice but can clearly see the emotion and the feeling of that particular passage of the operatic act. He was a great artist.

Flawless. Hadley is the most underrated tenor of his generation. I firmly believe he was discriminated against in the opera world because he was American.
@silvr94

He had a fantastic career in the US. He worked with the greatest singers and conductors. In the 90s he became more and more popular in Europe (despite his questionable German diction). I don't see how he - or any other American singer for that matter - faced discrimination. If you're good, speak European languages and have a bit of luck on your side, there is nothing stopping you as an American from having a great international career. As a matter of fact, it's usually the other way round. Many famous US opera singers actually started out in Europe because nobody wanted them in the US.

There is certainly some evidence of anti-American sentiment in opera. Ask Cheryl Studer and Chris Merritt how they felt about being booed at La Scala in Verdi’s Sicilian Vespers.

well I too love Wunderlich and I too am a tenor that has performed this piece many many times. This is a tough piece as is all Mozart. This is an excellent performance and to belittle it makes me question how much you REALLY love music. This is a QUALITY performance !
@suzannederringer1607
@suzannederringer1607 4 жыл бұрын
It's a tough piece because it seems so simple and there's no big drama. Just an introspective moment - quiet Joy. It seems simple but it's not...like 'Porgi Amor' in NOZZE DI FIGARO (I'm a Soprano) - just pure legato singing, very exposed.

Right. I would say the language is German but the repertoire is similarly Italian since Mozart went to Italy for studying Italian compositions.

because of higher tessitura of this Aria specially at the final part it's difficult for most tenors....he handles the tessitura but the Legato line is not very good... He sings it almost like Verdi Arias...

Hadley always had a rather overly open and nasal sound. He had very little palatial life and it seemed just overly natural sound. A sound he then tried to plum out in the middle register which resulted in the all too familiar sweet lyric broadway sound much of his opera had in it . By the time of the mid 1990's the voice was all over the place. And the work was less apparently. But the instrument was lovely however not edgy enough for the full blown Verdi rep but he had it in him. As one can clearly hear here. R.I.P.

He sings thrillingly with commitment to every word. Opera commentators seem obsessed with perfection and polish. Audiences don't give a damn about those things. That's why they're bleeding away
