Facial expression in ASL affects the meaning of a particular sign/word or concept. Elements such as facial expressions, body movement and shifts are just as essential as volume, speed and tone are in verbal communication. As for how she knows what the speaker is feeling without even looking at him.... cues such as the context of the message, the speaker's tone and volume as well as the interpreter's background knowledge of the situation/subject matter. Glad to shed some light on this topic in hopes of possibly stimulating a better understanding of ASL interpreting.
