I realize I am getting in on this years after the E-M1X was introduced but I certainly appreciate the information you've shared via your various videos regarding this body. Thank you very much, for I am really happy to be able to continue with my Olympus glass coupled with the new body I obtained a couple of weeks ago.

The live ND is normal stacking, but in-body. it's calculated by using real exposure * count of frames = full stacking time. So if your ND gives you 2 seconds Exposure, then stacking with 10 frames means 20 second exposure of data, but with 2 seconds light exposure. Same can be done in post with any editor, just shoot sequential like 50 frames and then in image editor stack them with median. You get total exposure value of exposure time * 50.

Except if you do your own stacking you won't stuck with the 1/2 second fastest shutter speed limitation, much much more freedom. How often anyone can shoot iso 200, F8 with 1/2 second exposure during a bright day anyway.

Peter, when you add 5 stops to 1.6 you get 3.2, 6.4, 12.8, 25.6. 51.2. So the 50 second exposure is correct. Could it be that you did not correctly set your variable filter to the correct value. Remember you only needed to be 1.5 stops out of alignment. You did say, "this is about right" :)

Most variable ND filters are quite inaccurate. In fact, many stronger regular ND filters will vary quite a bit between manufacturers (a bit like ISO will vary between different camera manufacturers and even camera models).

Hi, Peter! I tried ND live filters on my E-M1X with quite interesting results. I think the only exposure parameter you can control when using ND live filters is the aperture (stopping it down). In my case, using ND32 live filter, I had to stop down the aperture to f:1/14 to get a proper exposure on a very bright day. Also, attaching a CPL filter (2 stops down of light hitting the sensor) helped quite a lot.

If you use the internal ND the camera will take 5 shots and stack them each shot is only a small exposure time as the lens has no attachments and the camera settings are a single shot normal exposure. However if you take the five shots with a normal ND attached, then each shot will be the same as having a normal ND exposure so if the Electronic ND is 15 seconds for the 5 shots the add on filter will be the time taken for a normal ND shot x 5. Which in the case you demonstrate is a minute. I am not sure if the electronic ND varies the speed on the 5 shot sequence it may well do, so this flows through to the time taken when a normal ND is fitted.

Sony had a similar feature on older cameras with PlayMemory apps, where you can get even longer exposures. But the difference is, that it needed a tripod and it lasts forever to do this, where Olympus do this lightning fast. Sadly, my Olympus doesent have this feature, so I use a ND1000 filter. In my opinion, it doesen't effect the quality that much. That "waterfall" has some really nice colors.

I have experimented with the Live ND feature with mixed results due to a learning curve. This feature and the handheld high res were the primary reasons for purchasing the E-M1X. I have assigned the ND filter to a button which allows quick access. But still need to be able to quickly change between the ND levels. The major take away from you video was there seemed to be little difference between Live ND 32 and ND 32.

Interesting feature. Is this purely a software thing if it's image stacking? Could an E-M1 Mk II do this if the firmware allowed it? Interesting possibilities.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 5 жыл бұрын
It was done by software. That's what I have been told. It depends on how much processing power it needs. It stacks the images in camera. So I don't know if the processing power on the E-M1 MKII will be enough.

Spanish om-system ambassador Photomoisho takes 95 percent of his landscape photos with the live ND filter on. He explains it gives him 2 stops extra dynamic range. Can you conform this, Peter?
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
LiveND reduces noise because it stacks images. It does not really add dynamic range, but with less noise it is possible to open up the shadows more. In that sense it can be true. I need to test that.

Hi Peter, great video.I have a question. I want to photograph wind turbines during the day, and make them look like daisies in the desert. I was thinking of live ND, with a polarizer, or use hires mode with long shutter speeds, I need to be in the desert during the day to get high winds to make the turbines turn. variable ND or ND filters alone. What are your thoughts. Thank you for your time and your great videos.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 4 жыл бұрын
ND filters are a good choice. If it is really bright you need quite dark filter. maybe even a 10 stop filter to get a long shutter speed enough. Do not go too long since that might make the blades invisible. Hires mode with long shutter speeds is worth a try. There might be some edges that the multiple shots makes. Sounds like a very interesting image. If manage to to that please share it to us.

@@ArthurEmbleton Love that idea and agree that it should be software possible. Huge value add to the compact system. Any clue why they only did up to 5 stops instead of 10? A fixed 5 stop is all that's needed to hit 10, but still, a full range of ND filters built in would be travel friendly priceless.

I'm confused. Your chart is displaying "the shortest shutter speed " but in the OM1 manual, they refer to the "slowest shutter speed available." Now that's a big difference. If it's the slowest shutter speed, then there is no limit on how short a shutter speed can be used. If it's the "shortest", then you can't use a faster shutter speed. For example, if you use ND8, you have to shoot at 1/8th of a second or slower. So I think you must mean the slowest not the shortest.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter Жыл бұрын
You can say that either way. The 1/8th is the fastest that can be used. No faster shutter speed is available. That is why it the fastest even though 1/8s is not a fast shutter speed.

I know this 4 year old review , but just wondering how anyone can actually use this Live ND feature, with the limitation of faster shutter at 1/2 of a second, for 5 stop, plus the lowest native ISO at ISO 200, diffraction limit kick in so early at F8, can anyone really shoot a landscape picture in day light with ISO 200, F8, at 1/2 second??? is that a joke? I have a EM1X myself, but I found this Live ND is the most useless marketing BS Olympus packed into the camera. Guys, you really need to take a big grain of salt out of any brand's " visioneer" or "ambassador" has to say about their gears.
