Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Moscow today to attend the India-Russia annual summit. This marks PM Modi's first bilateral visit after assuming office for third term. The Indian Prime Minister is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin over dinner today followed by bilateral talks at the Kremlin that are scheduled for tomorrow (July 9). PM Modi's visit coincides with the NATO summit in the US. The Kremlin took a jibe at the Western nations saying that the West is "jealous" of PM Modi's visit to Moscow. PM Modi and President Putin are set to discuss various topics ranging from trade and connectivity to energy and defence. Reportedly, a defence logistics agreement is also in the pipeline, which could be signed during PM Modi's visit. Russia, an all-weather ally for India, is still New Delhi's largest defence supplier. Recently, growing ties between Russia and China, has been a matter of concern for India. Significant outcomes are expected from PM Modi's visit to Russia. Indian infrastructure failure is due to corruption and poor quality control. The contractors are hand in glove with the politicians so much so that only a fraction of the allocated funds are used in actual construction of the roads or bridges. One big unfortunate malady of the Indian society and the Indian system is corruption. I am fairly sure that flooding in Mumbai is not for the lack of financial resources. It is neither due to lack of technological skills or solutions. But for corrupt politicians, the CM of Maharashtra could call on the IIT Mumbai to solve this perennial problem. Maharashtra's (and most of the states Indian states) political ecosystem is full of low class uneducated and corrupt politicians. Mr. Modi's government need to figure a way out of this practice. It is not easy problem to solve because it affects a number of powerful people. It may never happen in India, but the movement to eradicated corruption should start at the bottom and people should demand just use of the public funds. Instead poorly educated people use family connections or cast connections or money to get government contracts which are implemented poorly. For example, how is that the contractor who built the Delhi airport is not arrested?
