H"es holding his thumb over the the mic for 2 reasons. not sure wich comes first but 1) prevent "plopping" as his voice is producing serious pressure differences. 2) placement of where mic is in hand in order to direct sound.

Unusually, Arjen didn’t write the lyrics for this song, just the music. The lyrics came from his partner Lori. The Guilt Machine album is based on their previous experiences with depression and personal disconnection. It’s my favourite one of his albums.

An entirely appropriate reaction to this song. I genuinely believe this is the finest vocal performance I've ever witnessed (although not in person sadly). Certainly the best male vocal performance. And whenever there's a shot of the crowd, you can see they are FEELING every note and every word, right in the soul. Watching these concerts from Australia makes me realise I live in a cultural backwater, honestly. Such incredible music and we outside of Europe kind of only find out about it by accident.

Imagine Christi that you are there. I was. Shivers down my spine, tears in my eyes. Arjen is a musical genius, together with Joost on keyboards. Last year september i was lucky again to get tickets for the Live Beneath the Waves concert. Well concert, prog metal opera. Damian is my favorite singer and while we were waiting in line to go in, he came by to say hello. That's the kind of person he is. Check out the live version of The Day That The World Breaks Down which was just released. Epic!

Nice reaction!! And you are in good company! This blows everyone's mind!!! It indeed is a religious experience. I visited a show from Ayreon last year. Beforehand there was a mile long queue of people waiting to enter the venue. Damian was so nice to walk the line, chatting here and there and was "tasting the waters". He is a genuine nice guy. As is the genius composer of all of this, Arjen. These artists enlighten my life. They are all amazing. Sir Joost van den Broek on keyboards had a great role in all of these projects. He produces a lot of musical projects and was even knighted by the royals for his achievements in music. As I said: they are all amazing. Goosebumps for life.

This song isnt "Into the electric castle" this is part of "other tales", Its actually from "Guilt Machine" another Arjen creation?, The new album is "Live beneath the waves. Guilt Machine is another project of Arjen Lucassen (different from Ayreon). One album was released at a rather dark moment of his life. My favorite track is Green and Cream. 🙂

I discovered Damian through this song. He's just amazing, such a lovely powerful but subtle voice. His solo stuff is great to. Its not commercial, its honest song writing. He's made me cry a few times, from the power and the emotion of his songs.

America has a music industry that is generally limited to US based music as though non-US music seldom exists. Also corporate radio stations won’t tolerate any music beyond 3 minutes.

👍Hi Christi,Damians microphone technic is for sure a bit strange but,maby a bit old school i would say ,when compressors and limiters were not in use that much.🤔 The "proximity" effect is well known in the professionel music world,the further you are from your microphone ,you loose a lot of the lower frequenties,maby Damian does it on purpose? Sound pressure (how loud your voice is going in the mic) is not really a problem with the right and modern microphones, they can handle loud voices. It's maby a strange thing for Damian to have a handheld microphone,because in musicals they mostly use body microphones,little mics wich are clipped behind the ear or lavalier microphones hanging/clipped on the chest area. Did hear some faults in other songs ,were damian really is to far from his microphone,but hey, the man is a powerhouse with a stellar voice.😉🤘

This song is not an Ayreon song, its actually from another Arjen project/band called Guilt Machine and it was performed here in an Aryeon live show. Commonly in the live shows they do songs from other Arjen projects like Guilt Machine and Star One.

I have seen Damian perform live a few times, solo with just his acoustic guitar as well as with band. He doesn't need any sweetening. And apart from being a fantastic singer, he is very nice guy. I have seen him a few times come out to meet the fans before his shows, inside the venue as well as going outside to meet fans waiting for the venue to open.

I would like to make a recommendation for you Christie for my favorite symphonic metal band from Finland wintersun. They are a sister band to nightwish and epica whom you love . My first wintersun suggestion is wintersun sons of winter and stars 1.5 official lyric video. Then next is wintersun time live rehearsal video at Sonic pump studios in Helsinki Finland. Follow that up with wintersun land of snow and sorrow live rehearsal video. And congratulations to you and your husband on being grandparents. Thank you Christie . Wintersun Alex ❤️

Notice how the audience is drawn into it. Maybe an important reason why Arjen will perform only in this 3K theatre. These concerts sold out not 15 but 5 minutes after the booking opened. Btw there is a similar good 2019 registration of the other songs from the Electric Castle. It starts with "Isis and Osiris" which introduces the first five candidates for the quest of the Castle. Narrated by John deLancy (from Star trek, he really enjoyed this), the candidates appear. We see Fish as the Highlander, Simone Simons as the Indian, Edwin Balogh as the Roman, Anneke van Giersbergen as the Egyptian and Damian Wilson as the Knight (hence that stained robe). Have you ever heard a religious debate between Roman and Egyptian yelling aaaaah's to each other? The backing voices are again performed by Jan Willem Ketelaers, Marcela Bovio and Dianne van Giersbergen (not related to Anneke). Two more candidates appear in the song Amazing Flight, the Barbarian by John Jaycee Cuijper and the the Hippie by Arjen himself. After (again) a musical debate we hear an aria-like singing by Simone and finally a musical coda where the veteran former Focus flute player comes to play... The Dutch audience is very pleased there because Focus was a popular Dutch group in the 1970s.

Good question, why do Americans not know so much about the European music scene? I'm American, but have lived in France for 27 years, and I still ask myself that question often. Huge rabbit hole there. Anyway, great reaction, because I understand you totally, and am extremely moved by this song and his voice every time. I have to say, Damian blows me away every time. I was there, at this concert - and all of the Ayreon shows in Holland - and it did sound like this live. It's even better than the studio version. The one male background vocalist is lower in the mix, on purpose, though I agree, he could be a bit higher in the mix. I also agree, the songwriting, and the dissonance is incredible here. You should get the Blu-Ray! You can't go wrong with anything Ayreon, or Damian Wilson; for that matter. I saw him live here in Paris on a tiny barge, a crowd of like 100 people, and his voice is just not of this world. I know what you mean when you say, when you hear someone like this, I should just stop singing. But, he is SO humble and a great guy! He always talks to the fans, and at the Ayreon shows in Holland, he always comes out before the show and walks up and down the line of people waiting to shake hands and take photos and chat. Check out his solo work, too. He's also worked with, and recorded albums with, Rick Wakeman's (of Yes fame) son, Adam Wakeman. One final thing. The one song of his that breaks my heart and makes me weep is "When I Leave This Land". You have some dissonance in there, too. Bring a tissue.

Look, I know that this is par for the course of engagement with a stream, asking for info "who is this?", "tell me the story" and stuff like that, but this is ludicrous. You announce that particular reaction one month early and you never checked who the singer is or what the album of the song was? Really now? How likely is that?
