Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a Gothic novella by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1886. The work is also known as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or simply Jekyll and Hyde. The novella follows Gabriel John Utterson, a London legal practitioner who investigates a series of strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and a murderous criminal named Edward Hyde. It is revealed at the end of the novella that Jekyll and Hyde are the same person, with Jekyll transforming into Hyde via an unnamed chemical concoction to live out his darker urges.
Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is one of the most famous pieces of English literature, and is considered to be a defining book of the gothic horror genre. The novella has also had a sizable impact on popular culture, with the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" being used in vernacular to refer to people with an outwardly good but sometimes shockingly evil nature.

Hi Lewis realky enjoyed the live read last night although did not get to the end, so something to look forward to today. As a keen gardener in my "postage stamp" plot I stumbled upon on the work of a lady Gertrude Jeckll ( the family like to pronounce it apparently as Jeeckll), a renowned gardener of her time for her "artistic" sense of colour and firm in her garden designs. So what I discovered then is that Robert Louis Stevenson was a very good friend of her brother Walter Jeckll, a former minister of religion, which he abandoned to go and live in Jamaica as a plantation owner. Part of this decision was because he suffered from asthma and the climate obviously suited him better and that is where he is buried. The story goes R L S was inspired to use his friend's name in the title of this book (my imagination wonders was his character similar in some way...who knows??😊) Isn't life funny?? Thanks again for your wonderful reads. 👍

Loved the end if this book, mind blowing once again and a little unnerving and unsettling...who knows when any of us could descend into the state of true badness or madness. It's a life's work Lewis I find to overcome the innate negativities of the human condition. For sure we all have good and bad but there are so many influences into the "two aspects of us" as you said, that's not a justification at all for sheer and absolute badness or madness but it's all in the mix of our genetic codes and environmental influences. At the end of it, we're all human for sure. I think what can aggravate this struggle to be that "better" person can unfortunately be made even more confusing by many extreme religious belief systems. Anyway I'm sure many a philosophical thesis has been written on the many aspects of the human condition but for me the most important thing for any of us is to be "aware" of our numbness both good and bad and work on the better aspects to the betterment of ourselves and our fellow humans. Let's face it many many people go through life "asleep" responding to whatever emotion, whim or challenge that presents itself at any given time...and let's not forget the forces outside of ourselves...so called Society. Wow! That takes altering our "natural" state to a whole new dimension which none of us escape. Be afraid, be really afraid!!! 😈😨☠

Well said Karen. I agree with all of that. Changing the world begins by changing ourselves. And yes. Awareness is a big part of all this! Are you aware of Gurdjieff and Ouspenskys work? They cover the need to awaken from sleep in great detail. 🙏

Yes I have listened to some of your Ouspensky readings. To be honest I kind of gave up after a while as it was all a bit cryptic. I did look up a little more on his life in general and listened to a few of his "followers" talking about his life, in this case the last ten years of his life which was spent in London. At his "talks" or gatherings he always had a cat on his knee as he said a cat was as close in nature to his ideal. I then came upon the description of his philosophy as "esoteric". I had to look it up and found it meant a "belief" in the like of tarot cards, crystals, angels, spirits and the like. So that kind of put me off and actually made sense of the cryptic nature of his writings. I will give it a go again as you said you were going to read some more. Thanks again for helping me open my mind to the many wonderful books out there that I've never got around to reading. Take care.

Thanks Lewis . 😊 Halloween / Samhain ( Sow- wen) is the Celtic new Year. This is a rather lovely short docu on Robert Louis S. Perhaps his Fathers persona has influence on this book. Here it is kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHLXY5iHeNuFiNU

Do you think that Stevensen went through this himself in order to describe this?

I think he must have, or at least seen it somewhere in his life. There is lots of commentary and notes written about the origins if one cares to read it.
