In all my years on computer, the C64 is I think the one most responsible for knocking me back in my seat awestruck, be it games or demos, mix sufficient talent with that little machine and well DAMN that was awesome, and how the heck in 2023 does this machine keep me in wonder, well yeah that was some talented work there, nicely done.

I remember showing one of these incredible C64 demos to my mom once. She said, "Oh, that's nice" as I'm scraping my jaw up off the floor. The sad truth is, these demos generally can't be fully appreciated unless you're familiar with the limitations of the machine and can fully respect what has been achieved. My mom thinks all computers can do all things, so not too impressed. (I remember my dad being blown away by the fact that you can load a program into a computer...and then remove the disc and it still works!)

One of the best ways i was able to describe the wizardry of the demoscene to a layman was to compare the artform to another similar one, painting on grains of rice. You have an extremely limited canvas, and you have to use very precise/surgical brushstrokes in order to be able to do it. And imho, THIS stuff should be in a museum or an art gallery that also goes over a basic understanding of how things work. Also, a timeline that goes over all the little tricks that were invented in order to get around the limitations. Because if you transported something like this into the past and told a c64 programmer that this was legit, they probably wouldn't believe you.

@@-Lotek-The-B0T-ASSASS1NMakes sense. To truly appreciate it though, I believe that one must be familiar with the limitations of the system to know how impressive this is. For example, I remember years ago showing some super impressive demo to my mom and she watched and listened patiently through the whole thing. I scraped my jaw up off the floor and put my eyeballs (which had popped out) back into their sockets and asked her what she thought. She said, "That's nice. Do you want chicken or cheeseburger for lunch?" I was flummoxed, but later realized why she wasn't totally blown away as I was.

@@JustWasted3HoursHere I feel ya. I did have some luck when it comes to showing 64k demos from Conspiracy. My friend couldn't believe that the file size was so small, so i may have sparked some interest there. PS: I too am fascinated by the stupidity of flerfs. Some of the debates I've seen are comedic masterpieces of dumb. Unfortunately, there are way too many poes out there that ruin the fun, but its almost just as fun trying to figure out if they are legit or not. But some of the more "popular" ones just grift off the gullible, which is why we must always FTFE! :P

5:11 that almost looks like a hologram sticker. What an amazing demo. The images fading into eachother like at 4:40 are so well done. And I loved all the games, it's unbelievable that the whole games part fits on one floppy side.

4:49 I'd really like to know how those crossfades are done! I have a modest understanding of the inner-workings of the VIC-II, but I'm scratching my head on that one.
@jammerc642 ай бұрын
In principle one of the 'simplest' effects here. Charmode display is composition of screen/tile map and colour map. Pixelated images scrolled across whole screen are just colour information taken from colour map per whole chars and screen map is filled by uniform pattern of noisy dithering (with each char being coloured accordingly). To that there are sprites displayed underneath the noise so the more sparse noisy pattern is, the more visible the sprites. Naturally, simplicity of idea doesn't make the effect easy to code ;)
@JustWasted3HoursHere2 ай бұрын
@@jammerc64 I should probably find and download the actual demo and run it on an emulator to get the full effect. Anyway, I've never seen a crossfade like that done on a C64 before. Might be simple, but not too many are doing it!

The file size of this demo is ~680k (four disks), so indeed it won't fit into 64k at once. I guess the parts are loaded into ram from some sort of memory extension, maybe REU, but don't know which exactly.

Can’t really get how the games slideshow is done. It can’t be an animation, the same music and sprites in the games have to be loaded for it to work, not to mention even a bit of the game logic (although that can be faked).
@NahMagic15 күн бұрын
It's all animation :) And yes trackloaded from 1 side all
