Of the many hundreds (if not thousands) of HiFi / audio gear / review etc KZbin videos I have watched this was easily, hands-down the best thing I have seen and heard. The mutual respect and friendship was so positive, just the smiles on each of your faces doing this was such an energy rush, so nice to see different sides of each of you and so much great information just flowed, it was just brilliant, thank you.

The reason you like the presentation of great headphones over great speakers is because with phones you are taking the room out of the equation. The sound is straight to you instead of the included room response, resonance, problems, etc. Crin is completely right about soundstage becoming much more apparent on headphones. I’ve used some of the most expensive studio monitors and still would listen on phones also to check things like soundstage, imaging, etc. Very much enjoyed the conversation, Sonny T

I believe the point that makes kz keep the drivers there even if they are not working is simply to charge more. "We have more components, so we can charge you more for it". The case you mention where they didn't choose to remove the driver and instead f* up the tuning by turning it on is mostly cause of this. They would probably be pressured to lower the price.

Andrew, your head must be HUGE. I have tried many and currently own 3 Focal headphones(Clear MG, Elex, Radiance), and none of them clamp hard at all for me. I can see how they don't keep stretching wider like many headphones do so that's understandable for big heads. I find the LCD-X 2021 has like no clamp sadly, and I would love just a little clamp force for it since it's heavy. The only headphones that clamped me hard were the 58X/6XX(all Senn's with that build can be eased up bending the steel) and the Beyer's like the 1990(those pads are hard though).

Just looking for some opinions here. I have AKG K371s, Sennheiser HD 6XX, and Audio Technica M50Xs. I'd like to get either DT 770, 880, or 990. Which of those would offer something the most different from what I already have? I'm going for variety of sound so I don't want one that sounds like something I already have. Thanks a ton in advance.

Regarding the KZ CRN, I do hear the BA timbre too. My guess is that the BA is not loud enough to alter the FR, but enough to colour the timbre. I had this discussion with my sound engineer friend and he's suspecting that all the drivers in the unit are tuned to the same FR curve on from 1k onwards. Crin probably needs to trust his ears more.
@h_enrix_92
@h_enrix_92 2 жыл бұрын
It's all about frequency response. Some drivers can reach specific frequencies more easily and others don't. But that doesn't mean a DD can't have the timbre of a BA or a BA can't have the bass response of a DD. Driver technology matters, of course, but in most cases, it comes to the tuning quality. About the KZ CRN situation, I believe they connected the drivers for marketing purposes, but as they don't know how to deal with them, they just put them at a very low volume so it wouldn't screw up the tuning, obviously leaving only the DD audible and working.

Heyyyy, biodyna lovers yet exist 👀 do you actually own one still @crin? I've been in love with this series of headphones ever since I got a D5000 heavy used and abused in 2016 - had a D2000 after, and now a heavily modded TH-610 since release (low 3-digit model number) and a busted TH-600 for fixing up. These are just something special, both stock and fun to mod.

The higher tolerance to bass coming from speakers could also be related to in room response, you might not gain +12dB of bass at 30Hz at the listening position.

Today another reviewer raised the prospect that some high end IEMs might not have all their drivers connected since the makers know that no one is ever going break them open. Perhaps he is suggesting this type of physical hack may even have started out in high end IEMs and then trickled down to budget sets. However, he claimed no special knowledge and wisely did not use any brandnames hypothetically. My question is: With all the fancy measuring equipment out there, why do we have to open up an IEM to tell if it is firing on all cylinders? 🤔
@TheHEADPHONEShow
@TheHEADPHONEShow 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think because you'd only be able to tell a difference in FR by opening them up. Theoretically we could tell by looking at THD behaviour but that would most likely only indicate whether BAs are firing, and in the upper frequencies that would get significantly more challenging to identify.
@GadZookz
@GadZookz 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHEADPHONEShow Hopefully, most companies are honest so adding disconnected drivers to up the count is not something most companies would do. Still, for greater certainty, IEM brands should reactively close the loose language loophole by clearly stating that all the drivers in their IEMs are active. The phrase ‘active drivers’ could be used in technical descriptions, product packaging and advertising.

for the money you pay for a pair of KZs, does it really matter how many bogus BAs they cram in there as long as you're satisfied with the overall sound its producing?
@Hari-kx2er
@Hari-kx2er 2 жыл бұрын
It is more a question of business ethics rather than a question of are you getting your money's worth. If you are only concerned about getting your money's worth , sure you are right 👍It does not matter. However, there is another side to the coin that regardless of whether we are talking about a 30$ iem or a 2000$ one, if a Company advertises 'X' number of drivers in an iem all of them should be functioning drivers and not just bogus namesake ones. In short, it ruins the trust factor when a company does false advertising.

Crinacle, no no no no no, best closed backs under 200 bucks are Senny HD280 PRO and Sony 7506 MDR. These are both a steal. As for Razer, years back I played "competitive" Quake as in I actually made money off it. I can say that for a fact Razer, Logitech, and Steelseries (aka the big three) do listen to feedback. But it's not what you would think. At a high level you are not listening to the music and you are throwing the EQ out the wall so you can hear other people walking behind the wall. This creates a sort of bizare audio situation where you are not going for clarity, or accuracy, but more on who is where and what they are doing. Other gaming headsets are geared to base and boom for single player games. This isn't a slam on them, but they are not really an audio product. All of the big three, especially Steelseries, have gone out of their way to improve their systems (I have an Arctis pro and it ships with an DAC/AMP with an OLED interface) in both audio and mic capibility. They are listening to what their customers want and deliver. But you sort of have to get what it's meant for? I've got a rack of audio gear but Steelseries headsets deliver the oomph and mic quality for a session with friends, suck for music though! As for "drivers don't matter" agree, completely. Looking at my old Etymotic ER-4s here and those are great. They do however need "an amp" though not anything fancy. I used to DJ (yes yes yes house music) so I have a decent stack but the ER-4s with a basic 200 buck combo amp/dac are great. Get the tool for the job. But I can sit here and look at a 200 buck DAC/AMP I built and a pair of HD280s and ER-4s and it will crush things out there... for what I use it for. Daily IEMs when biking to work are the blessing 2.

I found 100 times more enjoyment learning about headphones and balanced armatures than I ever did by having a $1300 pair of an ear monitors versus when I only had $100 pair I will say that my $1300 pair is extremely comfortable even laying down on a pillow for 16 hours a day but in terms of the sound quality it can do everything extremely well but if you have two pairs of hundred dollar headphones one for low end and one for a high end it’s basically the same thing.

HiFiman Edition XS is the worst parts bin cheap feeling $500 headphone ever made. Bought 2, one came with a hairline crack in the bottom part of the band that became a crack within 3 weeks. 2nd replacement, sounded nothing like the first version and had muddy bass. DO NOT BUY HIFIMAN. Same headphone and they sound different shows no quality control of the drivers. I think HiFiMan are still 10 years away from being a mature manufacturer of headphones, staff seem inexperienced, training seems insufficient, quality control seems non existent and prices are absurd for the build quality you get. They are chasing volume instead of making high quality headphones.

They said in their "promotional" pictures (not exclusively to CRN) that they put these "drivers" for "better" sound quality and stuff and they DO cost you more with more drivers. When it's proved that it hasn't done sh*t or deliberately plugged then that's fully a false advertising. It becomes the dumbest controversy not because why there are people caring it but because some people couldn't figure out why this is a problem.
