This might be long winded, but bare with me: these videos are SO helpful. We I started my podcast, I used a bunch of your tips. I didn't make a lot of mistakes other people have because of your tips. We're just under 2 years into our podcast and we just hit 100,000 listens yesterday. I do not believe that would've happened without your help. We launched the KZbin aspect of our show earlier this year. It's slow going but again, many of your tips have yielded results. We'll hit 1000 subs sooner than later and again, it will be because of many of your tips. Live streaming isn't in our plan just yet, but when we brach out, I will be revisiting videos like this to use as my guide. In short: thank you for all the help!

Appreciate these tips! We never thought about putting the camera to the side of our screen before. Agreed on having an outline/purpose to a stream, they keep you on track for sure than without one. You inspired us to think of doing at least one new thing for our next stream. Is your gopro attached to a power source of some sort? I tried using it as another angle but for whatever reason, Streamyard doesn't recognize it as a camera.

Yep, I have the GoPro connected to USB power so it can just run all day. It's running through a capture card and shows up right away- I've never tried connected directly via USB 🤔 I'd be super interested to know your guys' tips on streaming since I think you might have done more streams in total than pretty much anyone I know!

Thanks Tom for another informative video! I really appreciate you sharing mistake #5. As most people have a finite amount of time in a day, especially time to watch KZbin videos/livestreams, it can be really frustrating when you watch a livestream that is supposed to be in depth on a device or topic, and there actually is only 10 minutes worth of real content surrounded by 50 minutes of banter and fluff. While sometimes the banter can be really enjoyable, speaking for myself with that finite time, it can be hard to justify wanting to sit down for an hour to get a bite sized (email example) piece of information. Super important! Thanks again!!! 👊🏼
@MSladekPhoto

Agreed! There's a reason TV shows (and streaming) are 30 minutes or an hour. Movie are longer, and much more of a time commitment, so better be extra special.

Q1: Why this video's audio level is low? I checked 'stats for nerds', content loudness is -11.4dB. between it sounds good. Q2: Does the mic's sampling rate, frequency matter for streaming? why can't we use lav mic for streaming? Thanks for the tips, I really like your live cam angles.
@tombuck
@tombuck 3 жыл бұрын
You cna totally use a lav for streaming, and it can be a really great option if you move around a lot or don't want a mic cluttering up your shot. 👍 As for the audio levels, I try to output everything at -16, but KZbin also runs its own processing/EQ.

Now this is my kind of video! Being a streamer I LOVED seeing this...Especially that intro haha! I agree with the audio being first. Many of us listen in on a stream compared to watch due to multitasking so audio is SUPER essential. Lighting is key too with any camera to make things look well. The chat is where it's at! I agree. Last night I got hit with some really bad trolls in my chat but I have an awesome community that helped and mods that got rid of that quick. Fire lit ? Really Tom ? Hahah thank you for this. Hey Tom. Great advice again! Do you post process your audio or basically always nail it right during recording? I’m curious as to what’s your audio level range on your camera, like -12 to -6 using the VideoMic NTG? On a separate note, I got the Maono based on your previous video and used GarageBand for the first time to record. I tried to get the audio levels to peak just before the yellow marks on GB. And somehow I still get distortion at times. I did post process though cos felt the audio levels were too Low. Always struggling with the distortion and driving me crazy

I usually keep the Sony’s level to 10 and the Video ic around 9. I can always bumps it up or down a bit in Final Cut if needed. Sometimes I’ll use the parametric EQ to get rid of funky frequencies, but I also often end up just making things worse that way. For video and podcasts I try and level everything to -16 on the meters. 👍
@TechnicalRookie
@TechnicalRookie 3 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck thanks Tom! You mean you level it off at -16 for the video? No wonder I have been getting distortion. I thought I should keep it at the -6 to 0 range on the camera or even for the GB levels. Think will do it like what you say and experiment for myself. I really hate the distortion

Hey, I've been enjoying your videos a lot since I found you and you explain things in a very nice way! I was wondering if you had some guidelines for stream settings for the rode podmic that uses a scarlet solo (or better yet a video I haven't got to yet), I've watched quite a few videos by now but people make it seem like they just connected the podmic to a mixer (no mention of phantom power etc) and they're speaking super normal and clear, or sometimes it's just vague recommendations that don't go in depth with stream settings or filters etc. Keep up the great videos!
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
You've pretty much got it all correct! The PodMic is a dynamic mic, so you won't need any sort of Phantom Power (that's usually only needed for condenser mics). The Scarlett is pretty much plug and play, so it'll show up as a selectable audio source as soon as it's connected. After that, you'll just need to experiment a bit to get the levels that you want and then you're all set. If you find that the mic isn't loud enough or there's too much hiss I the signal, you can add a booster like a FetHead or the more affordable Klark Teknik CT-1. Good luck!
@darthbuzzkill
@darthbuzzkill 2 жыл бұрын

Hey Tom, question: Is it intentional in this video that constantly when you're in frontal view, the camera pans and pans very slowly from left to right, or vice versa, while you're viewing and talking? This irritates very much and partly hurts in the eyes. I have not seen so far in your other videos or is not to be seen. Intentional in this video?

If you're using Ecamm you can share your interview link. If you're using something else like Discord or WhatsApp, you can try to select the application as an audio source in your streaming software.
