Takes me back! in 2008 I had a Q9550 @3.625GHz running super quiet on a Tuniq Tower 120, the highest i got it running rock solid was 4.05GHz but with the fan and thermals getting higher than i felt comfortable around 80c overnight running prime 95. Paired it with 8GB 1150MHz CAS 5-5-5-11 ram and a HD 4850 that i volt-moded and i think ran at 850MHz with a 4 heat pipe CPU cooler i took out an HP business PC lol, the GPU was also whisper quiet at full load over hours of use. Also had a 120GB SandDisk Extreme wiff dat SATA 2 connection and a 1TB WD Black drive ;-) FYI, I lapped the CPU and heatsink to a mirror finish with Artic silver 5, which i needed just a pea size that still got mostly mushed out anyway because of how flat the two surfaces were against each other.

WOW!! This brings back some nostalgic memories.... I had the original Striker Extreme, and they had an LED lit I/O shield too, and if I remember correctly, it also had an LED readout for info too. I went for the EVGA 780i SLI(with the chipset fan add-on) after, and I still have that with the Q6600 G0 stepping(24/7@4.2GHz) and 4GB's of the Ballistix LED RAM and 2GB's of the SLI RAM sticks too. My mothers PC has the watercooled KFA2 GTX 470 that I was using with that mobo but I still have the Sparkle 8800GT that I was using with the Striker mobo though......🤔 Can't wait to see the bench scores. 👍

Dude i gotta confess. Just about5-6 short months ago, i recieved my first pc. A custom pre-built from i buy power. (BB981 to be specific, i5 9400f {yea ik} 1650 super B365 chipset)Which to deviate slightly, you might be happy to hear that i recieved the system in awesome condition. Nothing was not connected, no glue anywhere in fact it honestly looked like a nicely cable managed custom build.BUT there was 8gbs of ram installed in one stick vs 2 four gb sitcks in dual channel. Anyway ive not only gotten comfortable enough to perform the average gamerboi upgrades, adding identical ram IN dual channel, new gpu, soon to be new cpu, ive also gotten comfortable to dissasemble my system purely for the opportunity to get better aquainted, Intermediate disassembly for thermal interface replacement, waterblock installations, and even some mild expert lvl situations, like de-lidding an i7 to replace the stock thermal interface with liquid metal for reduced thermals and data transfer acoustics (yes that is a rough quote from you lol). I wouldnt have been able to make a quick study of some of these things without your content dude. Thanks alot man, ill be moving on to locate that awesome shirt patrick is wearing in this vod, Thanks again for the guiding light Obi-Wan Luke

Man, it made me cringe so hard seeing you guys completely lost in that BIOS settings. Unfortunately I didn't watch this video live. I could have "helped you" setup and overclock your system. I "upgraded" two months ago from my very own Striker II Extreme, Core 2 Quad Q9450, 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz, to a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU running on a Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite with 16 GB Kingston HyperX Predator 3600 CL16 memory. Can you imagine the feeling? I tried Cinebench r20 on my previous setup and it reached 163 points in multi-threaded mode. My Ryzen 3000 series easily reached 3830 points. That's the scale of my upgrade. 23.5x the score. Thanks GN for the great vids and the great work!

@Patrick G I know that AVX isn't supported by the Q9450 and that was one of the main reasons I had to get rid of it. :-D Thanks for your reply.

This motherboard looks so much better than everything that is sold today, I wish they would bring back those designs.. Today’s boards that try to look cool so 13 year olds will buy it are just ridiculous! Trying to look aggressive and slapping huge amounts of unnecessary plastic on it is ridiculous! I wish we could go back to visible copper and no non functional parts on our parts. Graphic cards are even more ridiculous, the most stupid ones are those that try to have a „diamond“ surface (or whatever they are trying to resemble) full of multicolored flashing leds. Oh and how I miss green and red pcbs.. ATI cards looked so amazing back then!

Less is more when it comes to applying the thermal paste. You probably aren't messing anything up on the GPU because there were no discrete components very close to the GPU die, but on the chipset that drop was too much and it could be problematic IF the paste is conductive. You don't want the paste spreading beyond the top of the die. Carey Holzmann has a good technique for applying thermal paste (albeit it uses a latex glove) and he manually spreads the paste with his finger and he dabs it evenly across the entire surface. This technique uses less paste and results in more efficient heat transfer. The closer the heat sink is to the die, the more efficient the heat transfer.

IDK why ppl ask why ppl do this. Playing with old hardware, setting it up and testing it is fun. Seeing what its capable of etc....exactly it doesn't really have a point bc you could search online and find the info...BUT yes is there really a point to playing games either? both are something ppl find entertaining.. its about entertainment.

It's widely understood all ASUS motherboards require a blood sacrifice prior to or during assembly. I too bled for both a ROG STRIX B350-F Gaming & an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 motherboard (yes...FX series, I had a 6300 and a 8350). My ancient ASUS X5DIJ (K50 series laptop) has had a blood letting too during the 5 or so repairs i've made to it

Wow SGI Depot, I bought an Octane II system of Ian about 15 years ago, I went to his house in Edinburgh to pick it up, nice guy. I hope he doesn't mind me saying but he was of the geek scale, his house was rammed with hardware, and systems waiting to go out. The STI gpu's are the granddaddy of all Nvidia cards, I remember Ian being a bit dismissive of the contemporary Nvidia cards, lol.

do you think the cmos was still giving power to the board? I know i recently messed up ryzen master settings and it took me like 5 hours to figure out i needed to put a jumper on jbat to reset it. idk much really about electrical engineering outside of phy101 just know you don't want to bridge points to over amp or over volt resistors, or if some of the components on the board still hold a charge, like with a psu, for the distilled water on the board and the ultrasonic cleaner.

Just a quick minor correction here Steve, nvidia keeps their hardware in more up to date drivers but they do not optimize or add any support for them for very long usually only until the generation after the following launches the cards from two gen old get no love anymore. Just because the card is in drivers from 2019 doesn't mean it's had any updates at all since 2013, OS compatibility aside.

This build steve and Patrick did is pretty much what I was going to do.. 10/11 years ago. I still have my striker extreme 2, all peripherals, box, manual etc. I was surprised, I swear by buying an expensive/decent mobo. It is the heart of a PC build imo. If you don't have a decent ticker, the other bits wont work as well It still turns on and has the correct date and time on it - still have the build up together. I got it to 2.93ghz, but it ran rather hot, it was more stable around 2.8(2.86.. iirc) and ran fine, no problems. Got a little uplift in performance but I was using a gt8500 and frankly.. it was a rubbish card and was a stop gap. But, the full build never materialised :( Tell you what, I wish the strikers watercooled vrm/southbridge heatpipe could appear on an x570 board

I remember when we got a 8x CD drive with write capability with 95... in 98 that was a holy grail- that I remember was definitely a Pentium 266 processor and I remember having to do some weird stuff with the native dos to get some games to work correctly (especially ones made for dos) as they were at this point sometimes still bound to cpu speed and ram.. so if your cpu was faster than the spec it would run at light speed and be unplayable, Haha Look at me rambling.. probably still have some dos 40mb hard drives lying around somewhere.. haha

Frankly, Ron White and the rest of those Foxworthy lads are about as much to comedy as standing around at the mic blowing raspberries is to killing it on stand-up night. So, only vaguely related to "comedy".
