Blame the fossil fuel companies who knew their products usage would cause extreme climate change. They knew almost 50 years ago climate change would occur and be responsible for extreme disasters and have been covering it up, spreading disinformation all that time. An altered climate has been proven to blame. While mistakes were made that worsened things, the extreme drought plus 100 mph winds spread embers far and wide. The wind also directly gave fuel to the fires, supercharging them. Ultimately, there was a lack of preparedness for this situation caused by climate change. However, beyond even that climate change plus Santa Ana winds are to blame for the fires and their extreme destructiveness. By denying this as the most important factor, we will not tackle the real problem of climate change, and it will only get far worse. We need to adapt and change our ways quickly. Pivoting to hybrids, all electric vehicles, solar, wind and geothermal needs to happen now.

Wonderful job on the meteorologist explains how and why the L.A. fires got so bad. Low humidity, high winds and dry brush. But NO MENTION ON FOREST MANAGEMENT? I’ve driven up and down I-5 from San Diego to Washington state and have always been impressed with the indigenous people (American Indians) and how they maintain their forested land. Keeping underbrush cleared from their land. You do not see these forest fires in their forests.

Friction. 100° air moving at 80+mph creates friction, which creates heat. This works really well in extremely dry dead grasses. A pile setting at just the right angle, catching a funnel effect say, can just light up. Other things are possible but given the weather conditions this is at least not unlikely.
