I joined the book tube community (if I actually count as being apart of it) very recently, and I believe that it was merph’s Harry Potter videos that I first found for her, I first found Daniels name of the wind review video, I hated him at first then actually thought about what he was saying and then that hate turned to respect. I saw Tim’s videos years ago, I randomly came upon one of his avatar videos and then fell in love with his videos from there.

I didnt realise how much I appreciated Azula until I watched this. During the top 5 list, i kept thinking Azula needs to be no.1 even though theres plenty of characters with more of an arc (and were there from the beginning). But i realised I was thinking this way: Azula made the show the level that it is. The first season was okay, but Zuko being a redeemable antagonist made him a less damaging antagonist. It made for good foundation, but the arcs and challenges didnt hit their stride until Zuko could break away from the antagonist role. The show for me didnt reach its full potential until Azula stepped in as a great threat. Everything Zuko goes through in the second season is a result of Azulas manipulation and domination, everything Aang struggles with greatly (the chase, or being struck by lightning) is because Azula is a such a dangerous threat to them. The third season felt a little like filler for the first half, and then its Azula messing with them during the first battle (Toph cant tell if shes lying, Sokka falls for her taunts), its azulas madness that makes the finale so intense. Without that, the aang v firelord fight is fine but its Generic Villain vs SuperGod (still done well) that was Elevated by the grounded family drama of zuko v azula, or the day of the eclipse would have just been an anticlimatic turn. To me, the show didnt Peak until Azula pushed everyone to their limits, and the show stays at that height because azula consistently does that even when she goes insane. I can think of a great example for how Azula undermines every other character on the show and without that, i feel all of the arcs we got just wouldnt have reached the full potential they did.

@xaviercopeland27894 жыл бұрын
Hey Murphy, you guys said you don’t watch many anime or read many manga, and I would highly recommend you all to watch A Silent Voice on Netflix and read Oysasumi PunPun. I’m not a big person on the whole Japanese comedy bit and all, so I usually gravitate towards the more adult side of things, and these two works are pieces of art. A Silent Voice is a story about a boy who goes on to try and gain forgiveness and right the wrongs of his past and top three best anime movies of all time, and Oyasumi PunPun is a surreal depression fest rollercoaster ride that’s just way too hard to explain. I’d recommend you watch a review on it or something given I don’t have nearly as much of a grasp to condense my thoughts into an easy to read, condensed manner, but it’s amazing. I’ll maybe even send you a copy of that along with 20th Century Boys to both you and Daniel (when he finishes moving), so that you guys can indulge and expand your horizons some more. It’d be nice if you guys loved the mediums as much as I do, and I want to give you guys something that isn’t heavy on the Japanese tropes as much to ease you into it you know?
@lampad45494 жыл бұрын
I mean to recommend stuff to get attached to the medium yet then tell people to avoid the things that are defining aspect of the medium is kind of counterintuitive and isnt also insulting to avoid things that are Japanese troupes as if those troupes that are synonymous and common within the culture make it lesser than stories that follow a more western approach as if that is the superior type.
@xaviercopeland27894 жыл бұрын
mel on it’s not lesser, just more accessible to people not used to the medium, and way less grating for people who are and want to read something new. The newer series are rejecting the older tropes because they aren’t as popular, and that’s because they are outdated, and the Western approaches are more widely liked now a days. Daniel Greene said he didn’t like any of the way the Japanese do their humor, and I am giving recommendations for everybody in this video, so it only makes sense.
@lampad45494 жыл бұрын
@@xaviercopeland2789 not really alot of newer shows like vinland saga, the current berserk, demon slayer, kaguya sama and alot of ongoing comedy anime still resort to that stuff. And youre right, that does make sense to recommend based on that so sorry if i came of as a triggered A hole. But if you want someone to become more interested in a medium especially one that has a tendency to particular cultural and stylistic roots to it ,its better to recommend stuff that indulges in that otherwise it encourages an acceptance of the western style of storytelling more and a rejection of those that dont adhere to that similar style and this could cause artist with that difference of cultural and stylistic roots to abandon like you are saying to conform and cater to western audiences and that style, thereby inadvertently saying that it is lesser because of these signature troupes. So i think its better for a western audience to try to be more inclusive of outside troupes and expose themselves to it more rather an encouraging an aversion to it if there goal is to be more involved in the art of storytelling.It just seems kind of myopic somewhat snobbish in summation. Sorry for the rambles i have too much free time.
@xaviercopeland27894 жыл бұрын
mel on its not lesser, just a thing of preference. Even in Kaguya, the tropes get flipped on their head and made fun of, Chainsaw man leaves them in the dust, AOT doesn’t have many of them, Promised Neverland devoid of them, and most of the seinen manga out there don’t have any of those tropes like Houseki no Kuni. It’s like how the sitcom went out of style. Stuff like The Office is still heralded as one of the greatest shows of all tike and the medium is well respected, but they came out so much during the era that people wanted to try something new. They still very much feel Japanese and the characters still act that way, they just aren’t overly goofy or fall into very overdone tropes people got bored of to the point that making fun of them is even getting boring.
@xaviercopeland27894 жыл бұрын
mel on I wouldn’t even say they are more western, just less traditional shounen/shoujo tropes more in favor of more adult/seinen themes.
