Jethro Tull was formed in the late 60's and released their debut album This Was in 1968. Led by charismatic frontman Ian Anderson, they have been touring and recording almost constantly ever since, have registered no.1 albums on both sides of the Atlantic, achieved a succession of gold and platinum discs and won a Grammy award. They remain a massive live draw wherever they play around the world.
In 1970 Jethro Tull played the Isle Of Wight Festival in front of 600,000 people. Earlier that year they had released their third album, Benefit, which had seen the introduction of a full time keyboard player to the band's line up. The set was drawn from across the three albums with popular tracks such as My Sunday Feeling, Dharma For One, Bourée and Nothing Is Easy and also featured My God, a track that would appear on the following year's classic album Aqualung, probably their most famous release.
Nothing Is Easy is a true concert film, combining the classic performances from the festival with a new interview with Ian Anderson, specially shot for the film, and with backstage footage and original interviews from 1970 with Isle of Wight residents and fans attending the festival.

You are so right.Their fans loved them because they remained faithful to their music, they put out a stunning album every year, and when they toured they always came to town. Was that a hot ticket!! Because of exactly what you said. You knew your were in for an awesome concert experience. I requested a Jethro Tull song on a local classic rock station some time back and told the DJ that Ian Anderson could command an arena of 20,000 with a wave of his flute and she giggled. I felt sorry for her. The only other band at the time that could rival Jethro Tull for a live concert performance was Emerson Lake and Palmer. Agree Mike? I’m sure you saw both. @@andythomas706....you're completely wrong I've seen Tull 6 times in 70~80s and Ian 3 times. . look up the 60~70s definition of a "head". the "roll" you said he played and his music defines who he is. i partied with Tull in 71 at dayton Hara arena. he's one of those you just love to talk to.spontaneous funny out to lunch..etc... i told him about my time at Kent St. in 70. he couldn't believe we were shot at and people died. he told me about a personal tragedy he went thru. kind of a bummer. when Ian played Cinny in 2013 i was close enough to hand the stage manager a note ...about what he told me along time and many brain cells ago. manager gave me a back stage pass. he didn't remember me but wondered how i knew. i told him about hara arena partying.. still didn't remember but like i said many brain cells ago. he's still one of those you love to talk to.. older slower but still half crazy but so am I.. i have 2 tickets reserved in my name for all his USA shows..if you want to go sometime....

Keith Harris Saw JT back in 2004 or 2005 in Houston. Great show in a great venue Jones Hall. He came to Houston again in 2018 or maybe 2017 but he’s lost a lot of his voice especially the higher registers so he really did his fans a disservice because he couldn’t deliver what they came to see and paid for.

@@jamesoeming5022 If I can be forgiven for butting into someone else's argument, the other guy isn't complaining about the fact that KZbin carries advertisements, just about where this particular advertisement is placed. Whose fault that is could be down to one of two things. If a video is more than 8 minutes long, KZbin by default inserts one or more mid-roll ads. Where KZbin puts these mid-roll adds is automated, basically by some rudimentary AI that looks for "gaps" in the sound track or action. Maybe the AI made a bad call here, probably because there aren't any such "gaps" in this case? But the video poster can move the adds to somewhere less intrusive - they can even turn them off! Whatever, it's a fact that the ad break in this particular video is in a really annoying place, and that's all the guy is saying; hardly justifies your over the top lecture in response. The TAAB album was remixed for the anniversary edition and the sound is unreal and the band discusses that album and how scared they all were to play it live the first time so intricate so many odd time changes. So cool to hear the band discuss the recording etc..

A lot of it had to do with the end of conscription in 1960~1963 while the USA still had theirs in force until the end of their involvement in Vietnam. A lot of young British talent developed during that short window of time in the 60s and "invaded" the USA.

Ian himself said he does not belong in the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, lasy year he said the following: “So far, it’s a sense of relief that I haven’t had to face the embarrassing prospect of being invited into the Hall of Fame, to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I’ve maintained the position that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an American institution about American-inspired music. It doesn’t necessarily preclude musicians of other nationalities, but I think it’s gotta be essentially about American music. Not necessarily exactly rock and roll, so we’re not talking about Chuck Berry, Little Richard, or Elvis Presley or whatever, but we’re talking broadly speaking, pop and rock music. There is a certain sort of American styling, and certainly, the Rolling Stones for example would fit that perfectly. @@wakakalolololol1352 I saw them play the whole Aqualung album in 1971. Before they came on, 5 blokes in brown janitor coats, carrying brushes, appeared & began sweeping the stage... My friend said "That's a bit weird." I said "It's probably the band." (He said) "Don't be stupid!" They removed their coats, picked up their instruments & started playing the album. It was quite a moment... I've seen them several times over the years. Always a great show. Tull's music is complex - not as palatable as many of the straight rock acts of the time & that's probably why they weren't as mainstream.

@@pipkin1865 Our ears naturally gravitate to what is familiar. I saw Martin Barre perform a few days ago... Had a chat with him... And I think what made Tull sound so different is that once Martin joined, the band had virtually no blues influence in their music at all. At that point in the history of rock, that would make them almost unique. He said during his performance that his wife keeps on telling him to write a blues song, and he keeps on telling her that he doesn't and never has played blues.

@@neilandfi Agreed. Must have been interesting talking to MB. Their music was difficult to categorise. What made them unique was of course IA's flute - not only the strangeness of a flautist within the context of their eclecticism - but also his style of playing. I play tenor sax & took private music lessons (back in the late 60's early 70's.) My sax teacher who also played flute was in a dance band (as in Glen Miller style.) Great musician but he abhorred anything post 50's, especially what he referred to as 'rock' music. I was amused to see that he had a copy of Stand Up in his record collection... A few years later I met him by chance & told him I'd joined a band - a 'rock band'. I'll never forget his reaction - sneering git :-)

@@pipkin1865 In meeting him, the first thing I noticed was what a warm and refreshingly ego-free man he is. Meeting him after watching him play made me realise he was probably responsible for far more of the composition from his period with the band than he was ever given the credit for. It's hard to imagine a rock band where the guitarist has almost no blues in their playing... Not some much a rock guitarist..more "ba-roque", perhaps ? I think I got into Tull initially because of (being a percussionist) Barriemore Barlow... I wasn't so familiar with Clive Bunker's playing, but I loved Barlow's style. (Bunker was at the gig too,as was our resident local hero, Mr Plant (blatant name dropping there...apologies). I would have been there anyway, but my daughter was the support act. Being as they are all genuinely nice human beings, she got a great schooling that night...and as she doesn't really know anything about Tull, she wasn't intimidated (we're quite used to RP being around at gigs in this area)... So she was just hanging with them, chatting and listening....But anyway... yeh it's late and I'm rambling

My god he was 23!!! I’m sixty now and a JT lover since my teenage years. I wished I could have experience them in my youth but I grew up in East Germany (GDR) and because of the iron curtain that was always just a dream. The only way to see them at these times was rare enough in TV. Some years ago I finally had the opportunity to see them live in a concert. And it was great! I have almost if not all of their albums (my N#1: Songs From The Wood) in my archive and have watched several live performances here at YT over the years. But I have to say that I haven’t seen this one ‘til this moment. I always knew Ian Anderson can play the flute like no other (one reason to love him and JT) but what he does here is even new for me! I say that with all the regard and respect: Artists like him I call an animal! In the best sense of that. What a performance! A funny detail marginally: Watching his fingering posture every music school flute teacher would throw his hands up in despair. ;-) But who else cares...

Not in any way under-rated. Tull were enormously popular and well regarded by fans and critics alike, especially when Aqualung came out. Just a pity they started to lose their edge with Thick as a Brick and subsequent albums.

right on...me too - exactly...I bought every Tull album back in the '70s...a big part of the reason I had to have a Marantz 150 wpc receiver and the Dual direct drive turntable that will track even if it's sitting at an angle, and the best cartridge I could find (Sherrard I think?) was because I wanted to hear 'The Minstrel In The Gallery' - REALLY hear it...I Love the Beatles, and the Pink Floyd, and so many others - but Jethro Tull doesn't take a back seat to any of them for me

I saw Jethro Tull perform this live in 1970 in Austin, TX. The audience had no idea what was about to unfold as My God! wasn't released until the followin' year on Aqualung. We were as mind blow by the performance as the crowd at Isle O' Wight were. Amazin'!
