He sings like he is in no hurry to get anywhere, and with a simple honest song to keep us all company on the journey. Thanks John Prine for all the warmth and smiles, tears and laughter you brought us through your gift of life and song.

My daughter (20yrs old) was sitting in a Denny's late one night and a table of intoxicated middle-age patrons started belting out John Prine songs (it was the day he died). She joined the table, told them her dad was a HUGE Prine fan and sang a few songs with them 😉

I get a kick out of watching Jason Wilbur's face on this video. He has probably performed this song with John hundreds of times, yet he still laughs along with the lyrics and you can see in his face the respect and love he has for John and he is also thoroughly entertained by his performance. There's a hole in my heart today, but John's music will always fill it up.
@sandspar

Had to rewind it the last time Jason had a big ole grin sneak up, watched it 3 times.There was this chord change, John led it down the steps so gracefully, so strong, one resonating Martin note at a time. Believe Jason heard that, and appreciated it for what it was. That, and the lyrics.

There R so many folks with the right messages, but I know John could upset someone with his words! But he tells it his way and he served our country and earned the right to speak his mind! USA lost a veteran who served for her, folk music lost a great writer who told it as he seen it, and the world lost a man of many thoughts and ways he thought it best to sing them, and many folks lost their best friend they never met!! But I hope everyone has the chance to watch him sing either live or just a video,,, and pick a song that u find by accident or just picked one, and listen with your hearts and see just a man, a Guitar and a attitude!! I know I lost a great friend who made me laugh, cry or just opened my mind up and made me feel just wow!!! Will always be a whole in my heart from another man who'd just listen and think outside the box. RIP my friend

That's probably my favorite Prine line too. I just discovered him. Took me only 75 years on this Earth to get here. Just glad I did. I love that line because that's how its worked out for me too. In an interview Prime said he never too much favored religion but that he was very big on spirituality. He said if he had been one of those first humans he would have been the guy drawing them pictures on cave walls. With that "I live..." line I think he may have been paraphrasing an old German theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who before Hitler's boys executed him said (to paraphrase) that being close to his God he was able to live in this world without being of this world. Yup, Dammit, that's just too good.!

@@gartholdham2422 That's deep, brother. I agree with his belief on Religion and Spirituality. I'm right there with him. And in all "factuality" so was Jesus! It was the Religious Heirarchy who killed him. And they're killing alot of dreams people had and turning them into robotic sheep. 🤨 I'm tired of Religion and Politics, they both divide, anger and conquer. 🙉

When I came back from my 3rd tour of Viet Nam I took a walk on the PCT for 800 miles to decompress. And then I found John Prine. For a guy who wasn't a combat vet; he could still relate. That is the essence of a Great song smith. He can take you to places you've been, even if he hasn't been there. That is a gift very few have. John is a national treasure for his ability to turn a whimsical phrase and tickle your funny bone but kick your head at the same time. And of course I appreciate that he has aged like most of us - rode hard and put away wet! If Buddha had played the guitar.....maybe in another universe....keep a-pickin' John!

Rick Danko introduced me to John Prine way back in the day. I realized I hadn't seen John since around 1999, the year we lost Rick. During this "Stay at home" order, I was feeling old and lonely with attending 11 funerals in 12 months. I was listening to John sing "Hello in There". Was feeling sorry for myself after being "exposed" to Covid-19. Half way through the KZbin video, a pop up on my screen said "John Prine dead at 73". That put me over the edge. The tears started and I cried for everyone. All of the tragedy in the world. I am just so sad. And so lonely. And now Sturgill Simpson tested positive. We just need to pray. AND VOTE!!! I planned on seeing John at Wolftrap in June. We all loved you man. Now what are we supposed to do? I'll start with an Illegal Smile. My condolences to Fiona and the boys. I hope John's doing what he said he would when he got to heaven. Until later, my friend. (That band in heaven is getting better by the day)! Rest in peace and say Hi to our friends, if that's how it works. :-( :-)

I am still mourning this man. I have a daughter just turned 25 and a son 28. We went to a JP concert on his 21 birthday. When I told my daughter he died she got hysterical. She works for jfp..free press. I had this great idea we should do a generational piece. Ok mom 🙄. That was a no. The next day she texted me that she did what I asked. Fwd: I remember when I was a child my father sang a song that I didn’t quite understand. I believe he sang it to us because he found humor in the fact that we couldn’t pick up the meaning in the song. It was “Illegal Smile”. As I grew older we would listen to listen to the self titled album “John Prine”. I remember asking if it was Jimmy Buffet and my father would say, “oh god no.” I listened to mostly the radio because I was a young girl who honestly wanted to be like Britney Spears but John’s songs made their way into my catalog. I always enjoyed when my father and mother would play that album. The whole family would chime in and sing “illegal smile”. He was an artist that brought a bond between me and my daddy. My father was my first love. He passed away when I was 14 tragically. I still listened to JP religiously because his music connected me to my father. I remember my father singing “Please don’t Bury me.” Before he passed away. When I got older I had a standard for the boy I’d one day marry. He had to like John Prine. Every man I’ve dated and liked John Prine I took it as a sign that he’d be the one to take my hand. Boy, was I foolish. A boy took me to see JP perform at the Ryman in Nashville. It was one of the most magical nights of my life. But, as it sometimes happens the boy broke my heart. I thought I’d never listen to JP again. Boy, I fooled myself again. I knew that I listened to JP to connect with my first true love, my daddy. I found a new love and he also enjoys John’s music which is me looking at it once again as a sign. The day the news of his death broke out my brother and mother called me. We all have been mourning together. I’d like to imagine that my father is totally stoked to see his favorite artist in the afterlife. I know that it may seem like a lot for a man I never met but his music was a way of hearing my daddy speak and sing to me again. I never took for granted that voice. Rest easy JP.

I'm embarrassed to say that I only learned of this song (and album} about 6-7 hours ago. I swear, I think I've played it 20 times. I don't know how the hell he does it...but he can deliver songs like no one else. Oh, I also have this Prine album & a couple of t-shirts on the way - ordered from Prine's website.

Broken hearts and dirty windows make life difficult to see. Some one asked what is your favorite John prine song, they are all good. How many musicians can you say that about. Thanks for the many songs, he's gone, but I have to hear his music every day.

John used to deliver the mail, with all its messages the people needed. Then he took to delivering joy and messages to a whole lot more people. He was great at both jobs. Hope they make him heaven's messenger man with a guitar. Or perhaps they did that a while ago. You made the world a better place, Postman Prine. You are great.
