You know when Adam has to say "this is messed up!", there is some *serious* crazy action going on! Once again, you have produced a masterpiece of both filming the action and documenting perfectly. This channel is like a Hidden Gem of the KZbin world, you really deserve 10x the number of subscribers for what you are doing (and especially compared with people unboxing junk or playing computer games...)

Thanks so much, that is really great to hear! Ya we never understand why YT doesn't show us to more people, but ultimately it doesn't really matter. We're doing this to build an awesome community of people to share ideas and inspire each other with exciting and beautiful climbs, and that part of it's going great! ❤️

There is not an outdoor/mountaineering/hiking/life-loving channel on KZbin that is currently going as hard as you guys are. This content is presented perfectly. The immersion, commentary, fun, is unmatched. The hard work that is put into this is off the scale I'm sure. I'm 100% serious when I say you guys deserve to be picked up by Netflix! This video went hard, so awesome. Loved it!

And, oh, nicely done... Daubenhborn or Gemmi was the main attraction of my last year's via ferattas trip and only a stupid accident on Almenalp, one hour away from Leukerbad, interrupted my dream to ascend it. I am green with envy for your success but I congratulate you with all my heart. It is spectacular! Your really prepare for these, I can tell, tip top physical and psychological shape. What confuses me is the amount of water and clothing you're carrying. It seems light. I am not a big water drinker but 2 even 3l of water are needed on such a long climb plus, if bad weather strikes, it looks like you do not have a lot of clothing to protect you from the elements. I guess you are reseaching heavily the forecast and don;t go in case of so and so weather, right?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 11 ай бұрын
Thank you, and so sorry to hear you had an accident that kept you from Daubenhorn. The good news is that now you still have it to look forward to, and you will absolutely love it! It's just an incredible via ferrata in every way. We each carry 2 1/2 liters of water and layers of clothing in our packs. Perhaps it looks confusing because they hug the body so tightly, but each of them can carry 12 liters of stuff so we can pack quite a lot in them. You are right, we did research the forecast for this climb and picked the day that there was no chance of rain. But ironically, we still got pretty wet from that waterfall in the cave! ❤️

Us too, Mary! It was our first time ever climbing upward through a cave like that, and we absolutely loved it! I think it's basically their version of the national park service that maintains the cables, and from what we've seen they do a really good job. Wait a minute! What feratta kit are you guys using? I don't see a shock absorber on them. They seem slimmer and slicker than what I know. Mind share what brand are they?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 11 ай бұрын
Sure Eugen -- these are not store-bought kits. I made them myself out of ultra-dynamic hi-rise construction tethers. This makes them heavier than the store-bought ones, but they are perfect for filming because they allow us to stretch away from the cable with the camera while still remaining safely connected to it. They are also extremely strong and durable, and because of the stretch in them do not require a shock absorber. I would not recommend this for most people, who should just buy one from a company, but for us the extra stretch is extremely valuable and well worth the extra weight. --A

Yes it's so cool the way these countries connect. When we did the Tour du Mont Blanc a few years ago, on one of the descent days we took a couple of plastic bags and literally sledded from France into Italy, then stayed the night in Courmayeur where we had the best gnocchi of our lives! ❤️

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 11 ай бұрын
Aw thank you -- ya where are those TV execs when we need them?!? That's a good question about anxiety attacks. It's very rare, but there was a point when we were doing that Oberrothorn traverse where the rock got loose and we were both just like, Turning Around Now! Also back when we did Galena Peak to Little San G traverse it was the same. Loose rock, where holds might break off in your hand, is the primary thing that scares both of us, and when we see it now combined with steep exposure we get the heck out of there! ❤️
@rjmacf0015
@rjmacf0015 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if you were both born without any fear of heights/falling or did you acquire it through practice? Do you enter these trips with detailed knowledge and have yourselves just prepared for every eventuality? Finally how long does this sort of effort last (up and down?). Its a remarkable way to document these remote areas. Well done again..
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard Жыл бұрын
Very interesting questions! Adam worked his way through college and grad school as a roofer, so that's where he overcame his fear of heights (before that it was probably about average). For me, I'm still working through it and only really started 12 years ago when I met Adam and started doing his crazy adventures with him! We always gather a lot of beta before the trips if we can, so usually have a good idea of what to expect. Though sometimes the beta is wrong and we have to improvise. And as for time it really depends. Big marathon-length adventures can take all day -- 12 hours or more -- but medium ones like this we can usually do in about half that. Filming usually adds an hour or two, depending on the filming challenges we encounter (it's harder to film when hanging from a cliff, for example!). ❤️

Many years ago I visited Leukerbad and took the tram up to the top. I remember seeing the huge cliff face and carved into it was a switch back trail you could use to walk up instead of taking the tram. The guy standing next to in the tram said “see that trail? You could ride a bike up it!” I’ll ne’er forget that, I’ve never seen anything remotely like it since… and I have seen more than a few mountains in my time!

@paulmelde919 that switchback trail is the normal route and it is extremely easy. Plenty of people, elderly and kids are making thir way up to the top of the tram every summer. Via Feratta on the other hand is something else. Vertical most of the way and very long.

That's a good question. This one was challenging because it was super vertical and often overhung with not a lot of holds, so you really needed to hold the cable a lot of times but the cables were kind of loose. It made it a real challenge, especially toward the top when the air got thinner -- almost 10,000 feet at the summit! ❤️

Wow! Very impressive! I've done a few via ferratas here in the western states, but nothing like that. One safety question I ask myself on the horizontal portions with lots of exposure below. If you use the made for via ferrata lanyards and you slip, you end up some 20-25' below the via ferrata cabling. Short of climbing the lanyards webbing, how do you get back on route safely? I'm curious as this scenario is on one of the via ferrata's out here. Thx!
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 11 ай бұрын
That's a great question, but not one that we ourselves confront because we built our own VF set ups out out ultra-dynamic hi-rise construction tethers. We did that because although the tethers are heavier, the extra stretch in them allows us to stretch away from the cables for filming while still remaining connected. So we don't have tear-away webbing on ours -- the fall protection is all in the stretchiness of the tethers. Is there really 20 feet of tear-away webbing in the made for VF kits? If so, I think you would have to just climb back up the rock and webbing (if rock holds aren't good) to get back on route after a fall that tore the webbing. However, remember that you are very unlikely to fall if you're careful. We've done a LOT of VFs, and neither of us has ever had a fall. ❤️

That's a great question. They do have really good maintenance guys, and the cables are generally in great shape. However, some of them on this hike had a lot more slack than others, which made them harder to use, and we're not sure why. They seemed in good shape, not frayed or anything, so maybe there's a reason for it having to do with snow or something we didn't understand. But the good news is we've done a lot of via ferratas and never had one come unbolted on us, so we have a lot of trust in those crews! ❤️

I've never done a via ferrata bu am intrigued by what happens if the safety attachment comes into play - it looks like you could have a long fall and easily sustain a significant injury. Do you carry spares for reattachment if they end up coming into play? Please keep safe and don't push it too far.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, Nick! In most store-bought via ferrata sets there is tear-out webbing so you can only use it once for a fall. After that, you need to replace the set and had better not fall the rest of that route (though falls are very rare among experience climbers, so that would be unlikely). Our set-up is different -- I built it myself out of ultra-dynamic hi-rise construction tethers to allow us to stretch away from the cable while filming. We have never fallen and preferably never will, but if we do it should do an excellent job of absorbing the shock through the huge amount of stretch in the tethers. I would then probably replace the heavy-duty carabiner just on the remote chance that it got micro-fractured in the fall. In the meantime, though, we would be well protected against multiple falls on the same climb because the first fall would be unlikely to damage the heavy-duty tethers. --A

@@tonyc2570 Yes 75 min sounds about right for the climb, and you also have the option of taking a gondola and then traversing about 15 minutes across to the starting point. Don't remember the white board, but there's a trail going right to the start from the Gemmi gondola station, and the hike up takes you there as well, so either way just follow that trail from the station and you can't miss it. You will see the iron when you get to it!

Thank you so much! I basically want to see what you guys saw. That looked so incredible! So did you guys do the gondola with the 15 minute traverse or the other way?

What an impressive couple you are... It is very humbling to see a young woman taking those passages happy and fearless, knowing from the little mountaineering experience I have that I as a grown man would just lock up mentally when faced with challenges like that. Thank you for taking us along on this incredible adventure!

Thanks Ben! Well it definitely took me a few years of experience to have full confidence on the big climbs and traverses that we do now, but it really is fun and joyous for me at this point, and I'm so glad that comes through on the videos! ❤️ --E

Awesome! Are those cables necessary to climb the route or can they be used mainly only for a safety "back up?"
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard Жыл бұрын
That's a great question, David. They're always optional in terms of using your hands on them. In the Dolomites we sometimes do climbs where we barely touch the cables because the rock holds are so good and it's fun to practice climbing technique. On this one there were a lot of places where we really needed the cables -- the rock face was pretty sheer and vertical (and also wet in places) so we ended up using them a lot more than on most via ferratas. Actually, come to think of it, maybe that's why many of the cables were so loose -- the probably get a lot more use by everyone who climbs it than on a typical via. ❤️

Pretty freakin' AMAZING.. I was thinking of the people who first climbed it, and and laid the cable, that would have been a difficult journey. And of course after the view, was thinking of the climb down, wish you could get a helio to pick you up :) .

Yes the very people who first put ferrata cables up were warriors - literally! The first via ferratas were put up by soldiers during WWI to establish strategic positions on top of the Dolomite mountains. And even though the people putting up new ones today have better and safer tools, they're still heroes in our book! Luckily the way down from Daubenhorn isn't too bad -- it's a nice trail down the back side. ❤️

These views... it's hard to believe they are real; this can't be a real place it is just too perfect 🤯. I am getting out each weekend and it's amazing but doesn't compare to this. Next month i will finally get to rap Tanriverdi falls, that has been my goal for the last year. Your video today is probably the first i would not do, that much elevation gain on that terrain would probably not be possible for me. You two are having quite the adventure still... or did you up and move and not tell us:)

Oh heck yes! Please let us know how it goes on Tanriverdi. As you know, we have a dream to do that whole thing with rappels as well, so will be excited to get your beta. Meanwhile we're back in LA now, doing some epic Sierra climbs. One more Dolomites beauty to show you next week and then it'll be all fall Sierra season! ❤️

That's great to hear, Catherine -- they were so intense in person, and we were definitely afraid they wouldn't come out right on camera because it's hard to capture that much depth. The cave was also amazing in person, but hard to capture on camera because it was so dark in there. Really glad you enjoyed this one! ❤️

@@LiveHardxLoveHard I thought the cave worked well, too - it was dark, but it was part of the atmosphere to convey that wet, slippery and somewhat uneasy feeling. 👍

Could you please make a video what sneakers and hiking sticks do you use? I am newto hiking but after a while i realized that sneakers with more agressive outsole are totally useless and slippery.

Yes absolutely -- we will do a full video on our gear once California's hiking season winds down this winter. In the meantime, the shoes we use for via ferratas are La Sportiva Approach shoes -- they are really great for comfort but also good edging and sticking to the rock when smearing. ❤️

Really beautiful filming, and location (and people of course), congratulations! I have seen other videos of this via ferrata, with lots of ladders, climbing next to a huge Swiss flag but I didn't see it in your video. Was it not there that day?

Thank you so much Daniel! They usually do have a cross and sometimes a flag at the summits in Switzerland. We tend to wander off to find a good snack spot and a place to do a moment of gratitude away from where the crowds gather, so we don't often video the crosses :)
