Not sure words can do this justice, but just want to say a huge 'thank you' on behalf of the viewers. Thanks Todd! Hikes like this are really interesting, because it's a totally different kind of fitness than a cardio sufferfest. It's more like these brief bouts of intense all-over body effort followed by a rest to catch your breath, and then doing it over and over again. It's almost like doing a weights and bodyweight workout for multiple hours, so the next day your legs are less sore than after something like Rim to Rim, but instead you have a kind of all-over body soreness. In May is a little too soon for high altitude ferattas. It's going to be snow and ice complicating the route ten fold. Thanks Kari, and you've definitely hit on the biggest mental hurdle for this kind of climb. It's really important to trust the cables, harness, and tethers or else you end up over-gripping your holds which wears your hands and forearms out really fast and makes a long climb impossible. But the way to get used to it is just to practice top-rope climbing in a gym, which is a nice safe and controlled environment, and then once you've done that enough it's a lot easier to trust gear outdoors in the wild. ❤️

@@kari4295 Yes we probably use the rocks more than most people, because ultimately we want to add actual rock climbing to our adventure repertoire and via ferratas are great practice for that. Thanks Phyllis, and don't worry! We were really vigilant about clipping into the cables on the sketchy parts, so the farthest we would have fallen in those dicey places was about 15 feet. Of course that wouldn't be a fun fall and we might get pretty scraped up, but it wouldn't be 5 o'clock newsworthy. You know we have too many adventures still to do to go out like that!! ❤️

It is a special, unique composition of limestone. Limestone is a relatively soluble rock creating amazing peaks, faces, ridges, valleys and caves. Dolomites is chok full of these features. It is also a friable rock and can make climbs dicey or sketch as Elise puts it, 😁

Thanks Brian -- very stoked that you liked this one, because it's for sure one of our favorite adventures. Also, at Lagazuoi there is a rifigio which is a great place to enjoy your well deserved meal !

Huge congrats, Ashish -- it's definitely a Dolomites rite of passage!! Yes we considered doing the cable car, but the allure of adding several thousand feet of vertical plus being out there all alone before the car started running won out. Did you find that the down climb was almost harder than the up? That crazy slippery scree ravine on the way down was totally nerve-wracking!! That's a great question. They were originally put in during WWI when the Italian army was battling the Austrian army for supremacy in the mountains. The cables allowed the soldiers to climb up to strategic high points. Ya and they're also lighter than our homemade ones, which would be nice. What's good about ours though is that they have a lot more stretch so we (mostly Adam) can stay connected to the cable while crawling out several feel onto dicey ledges to get great shots (mostly of Elise coming up or going by). So we might have to leave at least Adam with our homemade "filmers'" cables.

Excellent hike, but the Tomaselli ferrata - while difficult - is not the most difficult ferrata in the Dolomites (not to mention the entire world!!) It is spectacular, very vertical and exposed with difficult passages, but other ferratas (even in the Dolomites) are much longer and more complex. Nice video and beautiful day.
@LiveHardxLoveHard2 жыл бұрын
Wait Massimo, please tell us the other via ferrata you have in mind! One of our favorite sources of new hard hikes is recommendations from viewers, and we would love to hear about the long and complex ones you mention because we will most definitely be coming back to the area in the future. We did do Piazzeta Piz Boe already, which was pretty hard, but really want to hear what other ones you know about!
@MassimoBolognaItaly2 жыл бұрын
@@LiveHardxLoveHard If you come back in the area (Val di Fassa - Val Badia - Val Gardena - Cortina d'Ampezzo), I would strongly recommend the Mesules Ferrata: it has just been renovated and now it's completely protected with metal ropes so it's safer and a little easier than it used to be; I would consider it similar to the Tomaselli (or slightly easier) but it's longer and it's located in a beautiful area (the Sella group) so you can't miss it. I climbed it recently and I will upload the video soon. I also strongly recommend the Punta Anna ferrata and the Aglio ferrata, in the Tofane group (between Val Badia and Cortina); not super difficult (Punta Anna is quite exposed, anyway), but they can be combined in the same day if you want to challenge yourself and they are in the middle of an amazing environment, the Aglio ferrata takes you to the summit of Tofana di Mezzo at over 3,200 meters in elevation. If you want more demanding vie ferrate (technically / athletically speaking), the Magnifici 4 ferrata (in Val di Fassa) is known for being very difficult, but I have never climbed it. However, usually the most difficult ferrate in the Dolomites are considered to be the Costantini ferrata (in the Moiazza group) and the Stella Alpina ferrata (Agner mountain) : they are technically very difficult but what makes them extremely hard is that they are part of really long hikes (11-12 hours or so). The Costantini ferrata is super-long, and often times is considered the most difficult of them all. I have never climbed them, if you want to try them please get informed about the entire hike in order to understand if they are suitable for you, considering that they also include parts that are not secured by metal ropes. Also known to be super difficult is the Pisetta ferrata (near the "Dolomiti del Brenta" group), but I have never climbed it. I know that there are several other ferrate outside of the Dolomites that are considered to be more difficult than the Tomaselli, but I don't know much about them. Take care

Thanks very much, and it's a fair question given how much we love mountains and love pushing ourselves. I suffered pretty hard from altitude doing Kilimanjaro at 19,500 feet, and Everest is 10,000 higher even than that! Great video and even greater achievement, congrats. Though I noticed you both were using a safety system that could potentially be very painful or even deadly if you actually slipped and fell. You are basically using the two carabineers attached to a stretchy "rope", that would transfer all the energy into your bodies and could break your backs in case of a fall. I'm sure you plan on climbing many via ferratas and that's why I would suggest you invest into more modern style via ferrata sets that consist of an additional safety element - compressed lanyard, that can absorb much more energy of a fall and therefore has less impact on your body. I wish you more fun adventures and be safe.
@LiveHardxLoveHard2 жыл бұрын
Thank you -- it might be hard to tell from the video, but the tethers we use actually have a LOT of stretch to absorb violent energy. They are specifically designed to protect high rise construction workers in the case of a fall, and Adam re-purposed them for our via ferrata setup. So in truth, we feel safer with these than we would with most lanyards on the market. ❤️
@christianlang80322 жыл бұрын
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I would recommend to simply use a via ferrata set that is developed for this exact purpose. They start at around 60$, which is an amount well spent on protecting one's own life. Static and semi-static slings (as theses thethers most likely are) break already at a fall of 2 to 3 feet. And if they don't break, all the energy is absorbed by your body which leads to severe to live-threatening injures at the hip, spine, and neck. In order to reduce the impact and hence the force on the gear and on your body, via ferrata sets have an energy/shock absorper. You would actually be safer when not using any set at all instead of those improvised sets because you can go faster as there is no need to stop for clipping. I guess in 80 to 90 percent of the time, your improvised sets would fail when falling. Besides that, great video :)

@@christianlang8032 For most people that is a good recommendation, Christian. We designed our setup specifically for our needs when filming, and our dynamic tethers are very strong, reliable and safe. They would definitely not fail or injure us on a short fall. However, most people who are just climbing and not filming from multiple angles and positions do not need the extra length and flexibility that our tethers provide, so they would be better off just purchasing a regular via ferrata setup.

Very nice climb, probably my favorite so far. Love watching you two, but Adam, better leave the singing to the misses. Lol, awesome job. Monty

Thanks so much, Monty -- delighted that you liked this one! We both feel the same -- it was one of our all-time favorite climbs. And yeah, Adam's rapping career might be over before it started 🤣

How are you guys doing? Hoping all is well with both of you. Bob Holderness, Folsom, CA.

Thanks so much for asking, Bob! Elise's back injury is still healing so it's been a while since we've been able to do an adventure, but we're still working on projects and keeping a super positive attitude. ❤

And I had a hard time on the High Line trail in Glacier hahahaha. Terrified of heights. This looks terrifying but so epic! Have the best time.

Haha we love the High Line trail, Grace! We had an opportunity to trail run it about 5 years ago and still remember it vividly. But ya, if that one was scary for you then this one would for sure be over the top! ❤️

Well, that left my palms a little sweaty! You guys are fearless with that exposure. I agree, I hate loose rock on the down.

OMG Aamon that loose gravelly stuff on a steep downslope is the worst!! It was pretty funny, because Adam was super calm and confident the whole hike until we hit that loose part, and then he was super freaked out. Probably it comes from being so big and tall -- it gives him more confidence when he's climbing, but more stress when descending on ice or gravel because he's got so much further to fall if he slips! ❤️

OMG! I almost fast forwarded a few times. Knowing that you posted this video, I assumed you made it. Phew! 😲

Haha when we were climbing up and I saw Adam's foot slip, I almost wanted to fast forward the climb myself! There were for sure a few scary and challenging moments, but we really took our time and made sure to stay safe (except for a few skinned knees, but you always have to make some sort of sacrifice to the trail gods for a hike like that!). ❤️
