Wow! Ya’ll are fearless. The whole time watching the tight rope I kept thinking what would happen if you fell or lost balanced. I saw the safety rope, but do you have a plan for a slip? Awesome views. I truly enjoyed the video.
@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын
Thanks Shelle! That's a great question, and basically the plan for a slip comes down to trusting the equipment and trying to fall feet first rather than inverted. The tightropes are actually very safe for us fall-wise, because if we slipped we would just dangle in the air and then pull ourselves back up. The more dangerous falls would be if you fell on a rock face, got a foot caught and inverted, and then whacked your head or shoulder before the carabiner slid down to the next anchor point to stop the fall. So if you do fall on a rock face you just want to make sure not to catch your feet on anything, fall feet first, and let the equipment do its work. Theoretically, that should keep you safe (maybe a little scratched up) though we've never taken a fall on a via ferrata so can't say it yet from experience! ❤️

As the French would say: formidable! What does formidable mean in French? The French word "formidable" can be translated as "redoutable" (meaning formidable or difficult to overcome) or "impressionnant" (meaning tremendous or extraordinary). It can describe a task, a person, or a reputation. As Elise says "Up we go."

Wow. Totally fearless. How do you both overcome fear?
@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын
That's a great question -- mostly it's through exposure training, just gradually exposing ourselves to scarier and scarier drops until it starts to feel normal. That's why Adam always picks those crazy snack spots with his legs dangling, just to keep himself trained not to fear those crazy drops. ❤️
@geoffreymartin35203 ай бұрын

@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын
Thanks Geoffrey! This was definitely a bit of a challenging one to film because so much of the up-climbing was overhung, which meant that I really had to hang with one hand while filming with the other which is very tiring. However, it's always worth it to get the great view shots on these kinds of via ferratas. Fortunately we did not have to down climb the way we came up. @hermannschmidt97883 ай бұрын
Wow, that is spectacular! I am a little concerned about your security, though. You are using a security kit without a fall damper by the looks of it. The single carabiner at the harness might catch a hard fall at its long side, where it is less stable. I strongly recommend to put in a second biner or use a kit with a damper, which is attached to the harness via bowline knot.
@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын
Hermann you are right that we don't have a typical fall damper with this setup in the sense of the tear-away webbing that many via ferrata kits come with. But the tethers we use are ultra-dynamic (they're typically used in hi-rise construction safety set-ups) so they should absorb the energy of a fall without putting too much stress on the central carabiner. Still, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to use two smaller carabiners rather than one big one just to hedge against the possibility of a catastrophic failure. ❤️
@kumatmebrah90443 ай бұрын
Congrats on doing this, it looks incredible, hard and also really fun. I'm not trying to lecture, just asking out of interest - how come you're not using some kind of a resting system?
@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын
That's a great question, Kumat. On most of the commercial via ferrata systems people buy, there is tear-away webbing connected to the main tethers so you would use a separate sling connected to the harness if you wanted to take a rest (so as not to risk the tear-away webbing system on the main tethers). I built our system out of ultra-dynamic hi-rise construction tethers, so there is no tear-away webbing and we can just use the main tethers to rest if we want to. I also do have an extra non-dynamic sling and carabiner in the bag just in case we need it for anything, but we don't generally use it. --A
@kumatmebrah90443 ай бұрын
@@LiveHardxLoveHardOh that's really cool. The reason I was asking is that I just returned from Chamonix where I did the Parc Thermal via ferrata and had to use a resting sling several times in the last section or I wouldn't be able to make it. It was still a massive struggle even with the additional rest.
@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын

You folks are fantastic, and I thoroughly enjoy your videos. That said (and having done mountaineering around the world in years' gone-bye), I find your pure climbing videos to be more honest. There's something phony about these Via Ferratas. I don't dispute that they're exhilarating, but, barring making a personally induced technical error, the risk factor is pretty minimal.
@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын
Aw sorry to hear you don't care for the via ferrata vids. You're right that the ability to clip in makes them much safer than extreme mountaineering or class 4 scrambling, but in truth we really like that about them! It's so much fun to be able to climb up a gorgeous cliff face surrounded by great views without stressing about an imminent risk of death. But of course as you know we love to mix things up, so rest assured there will be plenty more steep peaks and sketchy traverses coming up the rest of the year as well! ❤️

It really was a nice via -- just so much variation in it, and great views the whole way. Yes we took a much easier route down the mountain around the back side. Mostly it was just a steep hiking trail, with a couple of very light ferrata sections but nothing like down climbing that giant face would have been if we'd had to go back the way we came! ❤️

awesome. How long did this take you? And how did you get back down? Is there a trail on the backside?? (hopefully). Do you need a permit? Or a guide?
@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын
It was super chill, Jack -- no guide or permit needed, and there is a pretty easy to follow though steep in places trail around the backside to get down. It took us about 5 hours car to car, but that's with a lot of filming and then dropping and retrieving the GoPro. If you were just climbing and didn't take too many breaks you could prob do the whole thing in about 3. ❤️

Thanks very much, and you're right about not thinking about the drop. Once you trust the gear and enjoy it, this is a truly spectacular via ferrata, but it would not be fun if worried about those massive drops! ❤️

That definitely tracks with our experience of it, Ellen -- they were buzzing right by us quite a few times but no contact whatsoever. And to be fair, it was us invading their cave so they had a right to be a little miffed! ❤️

Man, how legit are those harnesses if you slip? I'd be afraid to slip then have to figure out how to get back to the footholds and handholds while dangling there at a weird angle.
@LiveHardxLoveHard3 ай бұрын
Great question, Andrew. The harnesses are legit Black Diamond climbing harnesses, so you could take a good whipper in them and they'd hold up well. The tethers I made myself out of dynamic high rise construction tethers, so they're actually stronger than typical via ferrata tethers and should also hold up well. In truth, though, we haven't taken a real fall yet on a via ferrata so our only experience is the "fake" falls I did in the climbing gym when testing out the equipment. It def held up well there, though! ❤️

In your training, do you include exercise for your hands and forearms? It looks like this type of climb would require it.

ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. Exceptional video in the Alps, this time again his feat. Clinging to the steep walls, and after crossing a cave populated by bats, ignoring this devil's den, you both got close to the roof of the world, almost touching the stars. ADAM, Ben Affleck better behave, you can reprise the role of Batman without any problem. But would ELISE wear the costume of Catwoman ? Why not ? Kisses to you both.
