Living off grid has always seemed a bit daunting to us - that is, until now! We’ve spent the past four months learning how to live and work completely off grid, and we think we have mastered the set up needed to make our off grid living comfortable and stress free. This set up works EVERYWHERE and has totally saved us on multiple occasions. We’ve used it to stay connected while posting up on BLM land, camping at dispersed campsites, and it’s even saved us a few times while staying in actual rentals in the middle of nowhere with terrible WiFi. Not to mention, this off grid life is saving us thousands of dollars a month. And you know where that is going - straight into our investments so we can continue to work towards financial independence and early retirement.
Power your outdoor adventures with the Jackery 1000 v2! Perfect for camping, road trips, and RV life, ensuring you stay powered up wherever you go. Discover more and get yours at Jackery on Official Store and Amazon Store (below).

Congrats! I'm off the grid too, approaching 2 years- travelled the world, done lots of adventures, but I will say there's definitely things I miss about having my own home base. You can only live in a car and motels so long. Glad you're having fun.

Wow 2 years -- congrats to you too! One thing we're going to try to do to minimize getting tired of travel is to occasionally rent an airbnb in a cool place for a full month, to give us a little sense of a home base without actually having to commit to a year long lease and buy furniture, etc. Not sure yet how well that will work, but we will let you know! ❤️

Thanks for the shout out! That was awesome and totally unexpected. For that, if you head Florida way, we have comfy place you can sleep. And yes we survived Milton, but we have some repairs to do. You are awesome, thanks for sharing and we've become bigger fans of Starlink, especially after our trip to Redoubt Mountain Lodge in Lake Clark this summer...it was amazing. Stay safe, can't wait for the next adventure.

CO is definitely out of control with hotel/airbnb prices so anything you can do to make things reasonable is awesome! Thanks Dan! Yes it really is amazing how easy it is now to be nomadic with the Jackery-Starlink combo. I have literally had a client call me for an emergency session while we were driving in the middle of nowhere, pulled over and had a Skype session going with them in less than 5 minutes. CA and CO have both gotten really pricey for accommodations, but they're our two favorite places to adventure so we had no choice but to get creative, and that's honestly made it even more fun! --A

Thanks very much, and this is such timely advice! We literally just did a climb this weekend where we were wishing for all-terrain tires and skid plates on the three-mile drive in. Some of the gnarliest, most rutted and boulder-filled "road" we've ever encountered. The Subie handled it like a champ, but we had to stop and literally push another car out of the way that had gotten totally stuck. Seriously stoked that you guys have the same set up -- whenever we go to the really cool hardcore hiking places, it always seems like the most popular choice in trailhead parking lots! ❤️

This video was so interesting! Glad to see you guys are enjoying your nomad lives. As a travel nurse, I’m not quite in a situation where I’m interested in living off-grid full time, but for months at a time, this video gave me plenty of ideas. Quick questions if you get a chance to reply: how do you typically manage showering/bathing? Does starlink still work well when it’s overcast? (I know it’s supposed to, but wondered about your experience)
@betsyclarke185
@betsyclarke185 8 күн бұрын
Also curious about bathing!
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 8 күн бұрын
These are great questions, Colby. For bathing, as you know we really prefer lakes and waterfalls so whenever possible we camp near a natural body of water. We have actually come to prefer that to a regular shower! But when there is no natural water, we usually just go without showering (drinking water in the car is too precious to use for bathing) and then shower at the gym whenever we come into town to work out, which is pretty often. So far the Starlink has been perfect even when it's overcast. Will definitely update you though if we have any problems with it once we get into rainy season, etc! ❤️

Fantastic vlog Adam & Elise. Very interesting how you guys are operating logistically. Costs involved in maintaining a house these days, especially the ever growing single market ! Seeing more & more embracing the "van life" Saw on the news, some poor guy in Tampa saw a Tornado rip away his house roof, leaving the inside open to the elements, even before Milton racked up ! Good for you two if caught up in a biblical storm's path, just load up & get out of "Dodge" Love you guys ☀️ 🦅 Stay safe 🤍 😺😸 ❤

John we've been thinking exactly the same thing! We get the heck out of Dodge even when some rainy weather rolls in because we don't want to waste a single weekend without at least one awesome adventure! And of course if there was a major disaster that took down all the electricity like what just happened in North Carolina, it wouldn't affect us at all. We are totally independent of the electrical grid and also the water supply with all our excellent filters. If there is a big disaster in one of the states we're in or close to, we've already talked about taking our Jackery-Starlink setup there in order to help everyone who's cut off communicate with their loved ones! ❤️

This is an interesting video. Thanks for sharing. I liked your solar and power solutions. My wife and I lived off grid for a summer when we first got married and it taught us a lot. One thing that I was curious about was your water setup. When I am gone for a week, I take our old Ford E350 with two 7 gallon water jugs and cots inside. In the summer, a daily shower is no problem because it is hot enough to heat the water. In colder months, a Coleman two burner grill works great as a water heater. Interested to see more of how you are roughing it!
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 8 күн бұрын
Thanks Jared! We will definitely do further videos on these issues, and the water question is a good one. We use natural bodies of water to bathe or just skip it for a couple days if natural water isn't available. We haven't yet stayed anywhere for more than a weekend that doesn't have natural water to bathe in, but if we do we'll def need to follow your plan and bring extra bathing water because 3 days would be too long! ❤️

Very cool! We used to do a lot of off grid stuff. I have two recommendations. Get a portable jump starter and a small battery block. Put them in the glove compartment, check on them sometimes to make sure they remain charged, but otherwise forget about them. Equipment fails - your jackery plug, a microchip, connections, anything - and having a way to jump your car or juice your phones while you reach civilization is a must.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 8 күн бұрын
These are great suggestions! And it reminded me of something we should have added in the video -- the Jackery solar panel has its own direct plug-in too for phones, etc, so even if we accidentally dropped the Jackery off a cliff or something we could still at least charge stuff direct off the solar. ❤️

@LiveHardxLoveHard

Lorina these are great questions!! Yes we have a 24-hour Fitness membership with buddy pass, and we go there all the time for workouts, showers, etc. It is amazing, by the way, how nice the 24-hour fitnesses in Colorado are! And yes we do have bear spray for when we go up north into grizzly territory. We're not too worried about black bears, because we've encountered plenty of them over the years and they're pretty harmless, but grizzlies are a whole other story. The bathroom system really depends on where we're staying. A lot of times there is a trailhead bathroom close by which is great, but sometimes it's either a WAG bag or dig down 6-12 inches. That aspect would definitely be the allure of a bigger rig with a black-water tank! ❤️

I love the Subaru setup. It's nice and simple, and you still get good mileage. If you want to keep doing this long-term, you might want to look into a truck camper like Bound for Nowhere. Personally, I think their truck setup is fantastic and would fit your style of adventure more than a sprinter van.

That is great advice, and we are right there with you. The Subaru is an amazing car for putting in a ton of road miles and also great for a few nights at a time off grid, but then it's also super nice to come have a bathroom and comfy bed when we're housesitting, etc. If we really decide to go full time off grid we will definitely want a bigger and more comfortable rig. ❤️

This is so amazing!!!! Also I have a question about off-trail hiking: how do you usually find off-trail scrambling routes? and how do you know how difficult (class 2 3 4 5) it will be at certain spots? (I am also in SoCal if that's relevant). Thanks!!!
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard Күн бұрын
Thank you, and that's a good question. We often get personal recommendations from other hikers and climbers we know, which is the best because then it is very reliable information. Also, there are a lot of sites that give good reports about routes, from AllTrails to Summitpost to Peakbagger, and they will let you know if it is class 3, 4, or 5, and how difficult the class 5 parts are. Often it's a route with just one or two low class 5 moves, which we usually will treat as class 4 and something we can probably do without ropes. ❤️

Yes we thought about it very seriously before we started out on the nomad journey! But when we figured out how many miles we'd be driving, and worked out the gas cost and price differential in the vehicles, it seemed like getting lodging occasionally was actually the cheaper option! However, now that we're enjoying off grid living so much it's probably just a matter of time until we upgrade to a bigger and more comfortable and bathroom-equipped rig! ❤️

It's going to get cold for living in the wild!!! Meteorologists are predicting atmospheric rivers again for Cali this winter season. Here in Phx, we FINALLY failed to reach +100 in over 3 weeks. 21 straight days of record highs every day. Prior to the current streak, we had 4 or 5 days where the high pressure broke, and only hit the mid 90's; that was after 113 straight days of +100 (many over 115). Anyhow, Quartzsite AZ is warm enough in the winter...maybe escape to Yuma...but it is boring. A little cooler in Joshua Tree (I'm sure I'm telling you guys nothing new). That Subaru is nice; but a nice used (and affordable) Lexus 460gx would do you two well. I'm 6'3", and love my 4Runner...but I'm considering a change. Hopefully you don't block me for unsolicited advice (lol); I'm sure it gets old. Last; I'm an old guy... now in my 60's... a lot more cautious (did a lot of things that now look dumb...were dumb...like walking across Death Valley at Badwater several years back on a day when the "official" high was 129). I wonder when you two look back at your videos in 30 years; if you'll be saying "Wow, we dodged a catastrophe that day"!

We're gonna stay in CO for a couple more weeks and then head back toward Cali for November, but then we have a big surprise for you guys -- we're going to REALLY head south to Costa Rica for a month and escape the winter cold! And if it works out well, we'll probably keep on doing that plan of spending at least a couple months of winter in a Southern Hemisphere place, or Hawaii, or wherever is warm and nice with great hikes and adventures to do! ❤️

You guys have such an amazing Setup! If I had one recommendation for you, it would be potentially upgrading your Yeti cooler to a 12v dc electric cooler like the Iceco go20 cooler. It can save you guys from having to do ice runs and expand your options for food like ice cream. It can run right off of your Jackery Explorer 1000v2 power station and run for days. I just got one and I highly recommend it! :) For the future you guys can also upgrade and get a Portable Hot Shower system like the Hottap system from Joolca. It uses propane to heat up the water and for the water pump you power it with the Jackery.

The land of the free. I am envious. Have you considered using a roof tent?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 5 күн бұрын
Yes Hermann! The reason we didn't go with a rooftop tent is that since we're now living from the car full time we have a lot of extra gear we need to carry with us for climbing, mountaineering, etc, so we really need a car top carrier to hold a lot of that stuff. Our freestanding tent only takes up a tiny bit of space in the car top carrier, whereas most roof tents would replace the car top carrier completely so we couldn't carry as much stuff. Car top tents are super cool, but they are better for weekend trips for people who live in a house or apartment, as opposed to people who have to carry all their belongings on the road with them full time. ❤️

These are excellent questions, Linda! It's a Subaru Outback, and we'll do a full breakdown for you guys at the end of the year of all our expense categories including gas, insurance, etc. But the short version is that car expenses haven't gone up nearly as much as we expected, because we used to have to drive so far every weekend from LA for adventures and that was already putting a lot of extra miles on the car. Now we are still traveling to a lot of places and putting on a lot of miles, but we can actually stay in those places for a few weeks at a time so the overall mileage hasn't increased that much -- plus gas in states other than California is way less expensive! ❤️

Hi Guys! Wow- I missed a few months and you go nomad on me! Kudos!! We have a very similar set up! The Outback is a great vehicle for car camping. I was wondering about Starlink- good to know. I went with an EBL power station- similar to Jackery and have your same cooler! Lol. What mattress did you go with? I’m happy with my Exped MegaMat single (since it’s just me) and I use the space behind the driver side for plastic storage bins which sit flush with the mattress ( behind passenger side). I went with two side by side Thule XT Sport (smaller) roof top boxes which pack a ton and have room to attach a side awning. I will say that purchasing inexpensive window nets, usb portable fans, and a set of WeatherTech shades helps tremendously. Walmart sells a black folding table that slides form fitting under the single mattress from hatch to crack line of back seat… this levels out when placing back seats down. Don’t forget to reverse the back headrests to prop mattress! Lol. Tricks of the trade, So proud of you two! How often do you sprinkle in a hotel / airbnb stay per month? I’m still in Charleston SC, fully retired but still have my pet and housesitting service. Thinking of selling my condo for good and doing the car camping full time. I’d love to know your thoughts on pros and cons. Hope to see you on the trails one day! Brian

Brian this is fantastic stuff! Love your pet sitting housesitting plan. We can't pet sit due to some of our adventures taking us away from the pets for a full day, but housesitting has been amazing so far. Your advice is great, and we do have some stuff like window nets (that we made ourselves, cause you know how we do) and storage bins. We'll do a more full break down in future, and also a breakdown of van vs. car (with some hotel and airbnb) in terms of expenses and convenience. Really love your suggestions, and will most likely take several. Once you leave the condo you will absolutely love the Starlink. It is a miraculous device, and for us it makes all the difference to be able to connect from wherever we are. ❤️

I'm an electrician who gets sent to construction sites all over the Seattle area and if I'm working at a site thats more than 30 miles or 1 hours drive from my condo than I live in my hybrid SUV during the workweek and come back home on the weekend. I'm hoping to sell my condo as soon as I have enough equity to break even the HOA is too hard to deal with and its too expensive. I'll try to rent a cheap place when I sell the condo but if there are no affordable rentals or the landlords have crazy rules like no guests then I might get a slightly bigger car and live in it full time. My SUV is stealthy enough that I can park in neighborhoods the key is having curtains that keep light from escaping, a couple big batteries, a small microwave and my phone has wifi hotspot capability, going to a different neighborhood each night and not going to the sleeping spot until dusk. Temperature control is a bit of a problem I have to park in the shade, crack the windows and use fans during the summer and run a heater during the winter. The great thing about a hybrid is you can run the climate control for several hours and only use like 1/2 a gallon of gas, it runs off the hybrid battery most of the time and the gas engine turns on for a few minutes when the hybrid battery gets low. I too am trying to early retire although its hard when you are priced out of the housing market/can't build equity. I can start collecting a small electrician pension in my late 50's and withdrawing from my Roth IRA at 59.5 but I might have to live in a car or sailboat my first few years of retirement until the pension/IRA/Social Security kick in. I know some people frown on living in vehicles but where there are no affordable legal options what do they expect us to do? So long as rents and houses keep going up faster than inflation we will see more people living this way yet neither party wants to talk about the housing problem.

Your set up sounds awesome!!! And forget about people who frown on you living in your car. Plus, once you retire and are free to travel wherever, you will have so much fun adventuring to new places! And it's not like you can't get a cheap motel or airbnb whenever you feel like it. We do that often, and overall it is still way less expensive that paying rent/mortgage/condo fees, etc! ❤

Ellen the Jackery would be perfect for when the power goes out, and yes it will run the refrigerator -- though not constantly all day. A big fridge will pull about 500 watts or so, which would drain the battery in about three hours if you have the solar running. However, by not opening the door too much and turning it on for an hour or two every four hours you could keep stuff cold almost indefinitely, and of course keep all your other electronics charged as well. ❤️

Maybe consider???? A strong box (lockable, and with sturdy handles to draw a chain thru it and lock it to the bottom of a seat). Several years ago; several vehicles (including my friends) at the "horseshoe" pull off parking spot at the Salmon Falls trailhead (south of Big Sur on PC) was broken into. Unfortunately, I had an $800 flash unit stolen. To make matters worse; my friend didn't file a claim; so I was out a flash unit. And (sort of funny); to make it really bad, we got to Big Sur St Park...my friend decided not to gas up, and to do it in the morning before heading up to Carmel to find a place to fix his smashed drivers window. Well, the evening went well...had a camp dinner and a couple beers b4 getting into our tents under the redwoods. At 1 in the morning, my tent zipper comes down, and a flashlight in my face, and my friend saying "We gotta bug out of here Troy". Long story short, after 45 min of trying to convince him everything was fine (he was having some type of psychotic attack); we packed his vehicle up (a Scion SUV) and pulled out of Big Sur heading north. Well, his scion had about 1/8th of a tank of gas, and the station (west side of PCH from park entrance) at 230am was closed and didn't have an auto pay at the pump. So, we are driving up PCH to Carmel; middle of July...LA the day prior was in an extreme heat wave. As you know, PCH gets cold at night; and the temp was below 40. We both had brought jackets and knit hats. The moon was full, and the fog was intermittent along the cliffs...so taht was neat...other than we were pretty cold (smashed out window... heat on max didn't help). Thankfully, we got to Carmel without running out of gas, and the 1st station was closed; but was still able to pay and pump. Still very cold, as we made our way over to the central valley, down the 101...as the sun rose, still cold...made or way over to the 5...by time we got to Pasadena, it was no longer cold; it was well in the 90's and I was so pissed that I had taken a week from work, to be ruined by his extreme claustrophobia, that I refused to stop ( get jackets off and get into shorts...we are both big guys, and changing on the drive is not possible in his little SUV). Oh...I had the driving duty, because he was still a freaked out. Anyhow, finally got changed out...but now it's back to really hot. We did hit a huge summer rainstorm coming back across to (to Phoenix), that helped cool things down some. That night, went to my brother in laws house...he said "I thought you and Jack were out camping for 5 days"...before I said anything, he said,, (Oh no, don't tell me...he started freaking out in his tent". Turns out he did the same thing on a deep sea trip out of San Diego... but on that trip; he had to deal with it for a few days. Anyhow...a strong box....I keep valuables in it and chain it to tie down points in the 4Runner.

@@LiveHardxLoveHard I just use a heavy duty chain; thru a handle and under the seat and around the bottom chair support. I found a steel "job/tool" box at Harbor Freight years back; locks and has handles to thread a chain thru (or; use a heavy duty bike cable lock). Holds my camera gear, computer, and other valuables. If I'm camping, and want to use the back of the vehicle, the box is short enough, and I slide it under the rear, and lock it to the axel; one time I locked it around a tree. I keep. note on top "Nothing of real value to steal". Of course, nothing is full proof. I see that Home Depot has some secure storage boxes also. You should invest in a small 8x10' tarp; that has reinforced eyelets; and some 6ft poles to make a cover. Or, tie off the tarp to the vehicle rails, and use 2 poles. You talked about hotel expense...my nephew arrives in a few days; we leave on a 5 day Utah roadtrip (from Phx) early Fri morning. I had planned to get to Moab on Friday (actually, was going to camp in Valley of the Gods...but it will be too cold). Anyhow, the affordable days in Moab hotels ended several years back (especially on the weekend). A cool place to camp in Moab; the Fisher Towers. I think the BLM charges $16. Only 8 spots. Anyhow; reversed the trip; going to Zion (Hurricane) on Friday...much cheaper; then head east thru the Big 5. Green River and Moab on Sun and Monday night; much cheaper.

I would love to do this, but I can't do my job remotely, and my wife likes living in a house. Love seeing others do it, though! Btw, what kind of work does Adam do remotely?

Ya Shane we hear versions of that a lot, which makes us realize how lucky we both are to have fully remote work and to be partners with someone who has the same wanderlust! Adam is a writer, and he's trying to retire but all his clients keep begging him to do "one more job" and also offering him more money, so he's still pretty darn busy! ❤️

You're saying the absolute truth. In fact, we heard that a lot of the hotels were completely sold out at those prices! That is a great idea, and we will for sure do a finances video for you guys at the end of the year. The short version is that while we don't make too much on the KZbin, at least we can write off nearly all of it because we have the videos to show that our travel to all of these places is a legitimate business expense. ❤️

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 5 күн бұрын
That's a great question. So far we're just putting all expenses on two cash-back credit cards which both helpfully break things down into categories and then we'll tally it all in Excel at the end of the year. We already have to do that with revenue because of taxes. So it should be pretty easy to put it all together for you guys in an end of year breakdown! ❤️

Who needs or wants to stealth camp? There are plenty of great places to camp where you don't have to worry about stealth camping. I have been doing what you do, living out of a no build Subaru for a long time without ever stealth camping. I will eventually go with a truck camper, though. A good step up from the fantastic Subaru. 😊

That is well said, Mickey! And the more we get into off-grid living the more we find people who recommend really great and lesser known dispersed camping spots to us! I think we're eventually going to follow your footsteps with a bigger truck or Sprinter camper set up. The Subaru is so much fun for now, but eventually it will be nice to have a bit more space. ❤️

@LiveHardxLoveHard When I think about it, 2 people in a Subaru might be a little more difficult than just one person. I have found it to make things go much better to go where the weather is nice. Way thumbs up on this video. Maybe one of the best yet (and I did watch the first one when you were just building the bed in the car). I lived a year and a half outta my car after my roommate got us evicted and it wore me down...but it was all city living in the car. This actually looks really fun. And to be able to travel wherever you want on any given day is really sweet. I didn't know anything about this Jackery thing and thought Starlink was just some satellites that Elon Musk shot into orbit over Ukraine. So, I am going to check out the Jackery with solar and a Starlink connection if I can link it on your page. I'm not a prepper or off-gridder but I think everyone should be prepared right now for any kind of emergencies that could drive them off-grid. I'm still working on a good "bug out bag" but this brings up a whole lot more questions. The only thing I might be worried about is if we were hit with an EMP or a extremely strong CMI, the electromagnetics could knock out whatever power sources you have ...mainly your car. There are companies that build devices that can block this out so your car will still drive though. Maybe worth investigating....although some people say these devices are hoooeey. And I got a gut laugh when one second, Adam is eating a big ass burrito and then in the Yeti he has boxes of grape nuts. LMFAO

Haha Jim that is so great you've been following this journey ever since that early build video -- thank you! Yes we are absolutely on the same page with you about being prepared for emergencies. In California it's earthquakes of course, but as we're seeing there are lots of other reasons like hurricanes to have an off-grid setup. Literally the power could go out in California for a whole month and it wouldn't affect our connectivity at all -- we are truly and completely off grid, and loving it! ❤️

You guys should think about getting a Renogy or Victron DC to DC charger to supplement your solar power. These devices will charge your Jackery at over 200 watts/hr. as you drive. Drive for 2 hours and you get 400 watts plus. And the best part - it works even if it's raining or night time since it works off your car alternator.

That's good advice, Bob. The 1000 always gets us easily through the night but since we only left in June we haven't even had to deal with extensive rain yet. We know the solar will be out, but are very curious to see how the Starlink performs in that kind of weather as well! ❤️

I realize it's not my business, you don't have to answer, thanks for sharing Larry Owens
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 8 күн бұрын
That's a great question, Larry! So it kind of depends on whether we keep loving nomad life as much as we do right now. Our thought is that if we still really love it as we get older we'll probably evolve gradually into more comfortable camper-type vehicles, month-long cruises, nice cushy airbnbs and things like that. But of course at some point we'll probably also just find a nice modest house, most likely somewhere in the Bishop/Mammoth or Tahoe area to use as a home base. One nice thing is that if we keep living as inexpensively as we are now, we will hopefully have a good amount saved up for a house when that time comes! ❤️

Well you've been watching us long enough to know that as long as we're close to a natural body of water, which is usually the case with our camping spots, we don't need a shower. That's a great question, and truthfully we're not sure yet. If we keep loving nomad life as much as we do now then we'll probably transition to larger and more comfortable travel setups as we get older, and also do lots of cruises and things like that. But if we get tired of traveling (or just physically can't do it as much), then we'll most likely get a pretty little place in the Eastern Sierra -- Bishop, Mammoth, or Tahoe -- and use that as a home base while hopefully still traveling occasionally. ❤️

@@LiveHardxLoveHard if the later is a possibility, there's this thing called inflation. My first of three houses was a whopping $25K! Bishop has some really nice locations.

We have looked at the Transits, and agree that it is a very good option!
