I have orange Medaka in a ceramic fish bowl on my patio. I have lots of duckweed to shade them from the hot FLORIDA sun. My bowl holds about 8 gallons and sits on a heavy duty rolling platform so I can put them in the shade. I found some tiny tadpoles in another pot and brought them inside to a small water terarrium. I took some water from my Medaka bowl to add to my tadpoles and found two Medaka fry!!! I’m so thrilled. Time to set up another Medaka bowl. Your suggestions about a nursery for the fry and shade are very helpful. Thank you for a very informative post.
@livelovelaughdiy2 жыл бұрын
Wow I'd love to see your patio ponds❤️ I can see how exciting to see the media fry! What I learnt from looking after the little fry, when they are younger than 2 weeks old, they normaly can't eat fish food even if you grind it to powder. In Japan, people feed plant planktons (Paramecium) to medals fry, but I couldn't find anyone sells them here. I tried to catch and grow them by myself but I failed. So I decided to keep the very young baby fish in green water in a bucket (water colour should be just light yellow green that I can still see the bottom of the bucket). Green water contains nutrition like planktons or bacteria so medals fry can feed themselves. After two weeks, they start being able to eat powder food. I found it's easier to look after little fish if I separate them from adult fish, and put the fry in a relatively large container like a bucket (my one is 15L size). I made green water by putting about 5 adult medals fish for 4-5 days in a bucket water, and move them back to the pond (time depends on the weather, size of fish, size of the bucket )In that way, the bucket water turned green. I didn't look after the fry, but they all survived in the green water! Now it's getting cold here, so they are slowing down the growth but they look happy. Good luck with your lovely ricefish and tadpoles 💕

Thank you 😊 Just a note, Japanese rice fish (medaka) can handle cold water if they are adult, but small fish may not be able to make it in winter. Also when it’s cold, they spend most of the time sitting at the bottom and don’t move much. So if your pond is deep, you may not be able to see them much. A lot of people start setting this kind of pond from spring in Japan. I think spring is the easiest season 😉

@livelovelaughdiy2 жыл бұрын
Wow! It sounds like a beautiful idea! If you are planning to put ricefish in that pond, I think it’s better to adjust the water to fall gently not to have too much stream in the pond. If there is some area where fish can avoid the current, it’s ok 👍 Also solar powered pump probably stops working during the night and can give a fish quiet sleep time😊

The Japanese garden is amazing and the mini fish pond is perfect. Just wondering since the pond is in outdoor, could the rice fish survive during winter? Do you need to change water regularly?
@livelovelaughdiy Жыл бұрын
Hi 😊 thank you for your comment & questions. Japanese rice fish can handle very cold water. I live in Gold Coast in Australia where the water never freezes even in the coldest day. So they are just fine. I don't know how the climate is like in winter in your area, but they can survive cold water under a thin layer of ice. Actually I've just uploaded a video about winter pond, you can check this video for the details 😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZnXi5Shfbipi5o Regarding the water change, I used to change water once/ 2-3 weeks to keep it clean from algae in summer with this mini pond (you don't need any water change in winter), but I upgraded it to a bigger patio pond with more plants and substrate last year and I changed water only once a year! My fish are happy and they reproduced a lot! The natural ecosystem must have worked well in the bigger patio pond. I have the video about my new pond if you like to know how I look after my fish. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4fYhHuFf8qNpMU

Precioso ........pero no pones filtro ni bomba de agua para oxigenar?
@livelovelaughdiy2 жыл бұрын
