December 31st of 1983, New Years Eve 40 years ago, a writer/film maker by the name of Carole Langer would be the first to give the world a glimpse into the lives of four small children from the Edenwald Houses in the Bronx. Her coverage and many articles years later would shine a light on the horrors these four kids endured in the care of their parents. It would also should the absolute failure of child services when it came to their protection, which would later lead to the tragic slaying of five year old Adam Mann. When these children needed protection the most, they were abandoned and left to fend for themselves. Those sworn to protect them did no such thing. Honestly, I think when a lot of people grow up in a toxic and abusive household, they become so desensitized to the toxicity and abuse and as they become adults and have children, the cycle continues unfortunately. I see it with people within my family. You may have a few people within a family that has the ability to become resilient; however, it’s most of the time coming with starting completely over and going low or no contact with your family. When people grow up in certain situations you become used to it to where it oftentimes seem normal. It takes a lot to break out of what you’re used to unfortunately.

I am in school gaining my BS in Human Services (social worker). Every week I read something or hear something in court. It's scary because one person can't change an entire f'd up system. I don't want to forget one child dealing with another. Over/under look this situation because I have 10 other situations. I know this is where I am supposed to be (God told me). Helping these babies out of the same exact situations my siblings and I grew up in. I don't want to be that worker that fails one of these children simply because there's so many that need help. Being a victim of sexual, or physical abuse does not mean that you need to continue it on your own children. I know because that was the way I was brought up. Also, CPS ain't changed. Now they say look at all the good we've done! And take children away for the most PETTY reasons! They hire evil ppl,sadists.and the supervisors are the WORST. You get on their radar doesn't matter if you're a good mom, and have your shit together they will find something until you've had ENOUGH and use your last bit of savings on an attorney to squash their BS But MOST don't have that kinda $$ All's I can say is get a job ASAP and start paying for a lawyer. A lot of CPS remove children only to place them in SA fostercare, fostercare just taking in kids to abuse physically, mentally and sexually, AND to receive a nice stipend. CPS also gets $$$$ for every child they place. They've not changed,they just got better at dodging prying eyes. It LOOKS like they care DO NOT ever trust CPS A vile bunch, they are.🤬

i know seriously ! what gets me is how violent people are, thinking that hitting, slapping, whuppins etc. will teach a kid. and yet you have countries, many of them, actually, that have completely outlawed physical punishment, and yet , unlike here in the US, these countries have a much lower crime rates, much lower violence rates, school / academic performance is higher, families are over all a bit more stable than ours tends to be.

I remember reading about this years ago and nothing much has changed. It might even have been a documentary. In many states and countries such things are still happening and each have their own outstanding cases, but nothing much has changed. Horrific cases are still ongoing even though departments say they will learn from the mistakes made so they don't happen again. They do keep happening again though, over and over and over. Caseworkers and their managers need to be held accountable.

It’s just so heartbreaking that these kids are gone and the parents get to live on after doing minimal amount of time. We definitely need more harsher punishment for these parents, real justice for these children. This story just made me look at my son and give him extra hugs. How can you hurt someone so small? The people who were supposed to work in social services should have lost their jobs, and been held accountable for their negligence. It sad how the parent got short prison term, which is ridiculous. I was in nursing school when I was pregnant with my 3rd and last child. I had a very hard time getting through the parts where we covered child abuse and neglect. I was assigned to give a short speech and couldn't get past the 1st paragraph. Luckily, I had an instructor who was very understanding and excused me from the front of the room until I was ready to continue my presentation.

The story of Adam and his brothers is one of the worst things I have ever listened to but I want to say you shared this with so much respect and integrity, what a shame that his own mother had no love in her heart die Adam or his brothers. Being abused and violated as a child is absolutely no excuse for repeating that behavior as an adult. Adam’s surviving brother and myself and countless others are living examples of the fact that we can overcome. I have children of my own and I would never repeat the horrors I endured at the hands of my parents and it sickens me when people use that as a cop out !

"He would be forced to sit on the toilet for hours" reminds me of my childhood living with religious fanatic relatives. They took me in from malnourishment and sexual exploitation at 5 yrs old to "save me" thru weird rituals and habits like that. It feels like a silent kind of suffering because, rather than being beaten and having marks to show that people believe--or have possibly experienced themselves--your stories just revolve around things like being left alone at the table for hours to hold food in my mouth if i wouldn't/couldn't swallow it (i had to be reminded to chew), standing in front of my parents wearing a diaper and using it in front of them to "prove what a baby i was" if i wet the bed, reading my journals out loud to confess my sexual sins/being audio-video recorded surreptitiously around the house when the parents were gone... It's easy to talk about the sexual stuff, but talking about the weird-*ss humiliating stuff makes a person feel like a true outcast, like nobody else COULD understand. It's a tragic life, even before the murder is heaped on top. So many generationally broken families...

Stories that involves children like Adam, Nixzmary, Elisa and other abused/tortured children is the reason why I can never be a supporter in the anti-adoption/anti-foster care movements. Not every child belongs with their "blood relatives". Yes, both systems need serious reforms and overhauls. But to keep kids in households where abuse is evident is absolutely ridiculous.

Thank you for graciously sharing this case, not glossing over the details. My siblings and I were abused. I thought all children experienced it, but I felt like either I wouldn’t have children or I wouldn’t do them like that. Notice how they avoid damaging the face. It’s deliberate and they feel like as long as they do it behind closed doors it’s ok. There are still people that physically abusing children is a form of proper child rearing. They don’t think about the long term damage they do. Stop making children if you feel the need to treat them this way at all!!!

Time and time again I’m baffled and how much the system has failed these children. I just cannot comprehend with even having a huge case load, allowing a child to stay in the home of an abuser! I grew up in the 80s and 90s raised by my southern grandma so I’m used to getting a “whipping” with a switch or a belt. A few swats and I thought I would die. I was never left with marks or bruises it only hurt for a bit but to endure a blow so hard that you have over 100 welts and all these broken bones and a liver split in two…..I cannot even imagine the pain poor Adam felt. I just can’t comprehend it. What kind of demon can look at a child and hurt them like this? One thing I also notice in these cases is how these human stains love to starve the children. Using the lack of food is torture enough but then to beat them literally to death. My heart aches for Adam and so many more lost….
