@robertshadbolt30563 жыл бұрын
I followed Stan more or less his whole career with me being a Southend fan, Collymore was an outstanding talent. 2 brilliant feet and fantastic in the air. Pace to burn. His partnership with "God" was outstanding, one of the best pairings in the world at that time. Never got to have a run in an England shirt. I feel if he didn't have his personal demons, he could have been an all time great.

@@del7538 In Euro 1996, if only Terry Venables had brought in Robbie Fowler instead of Darren "Sickbed" Anderton in the semi final against Germany, England would have gone all the way to the final and even win the tournament.
@lucasm38792 жыл бұрын
@@del7538 I was a massive Collymore fan in '95 (and I don't support Liverpool). He underachieved in his career, but looking back now, it wasn't always someone else's fault. I just read a Frank Clarke interview where he talks about Collymore, he said Venables phoned him during the '95 Umbro Cup when Collymore was first called up, and asked him about Collymore's attitude, because he was acting like he didn't want to be there. Clarke said he was shocked, because most players would be delighted to be in the England squad when they were playing for Southend two years before! It seems bizarre to think someone like Emile Heskey (who I'm not criticising, but was nowhere near as good as Collymore) ended up achieving much more in his career. That shows how important attitude is. I also think Roy Evans wasn't the best manager for Liverpool in the mid 90's, that's just my opinion, but they seemed to get better when Houllier took over. Then again, maybe any manager at the time would have struggled to get the best out of Collymore.
@lucasm38792 жыл бұрын
@@robertshadbolt3056 Totally agree, Collymore was so good in that season in the prem for Forest, he looked potential world class, the full package, almost like an English Henry or Anelka. His first season for Liverpool (this one) he looked great in places too, although like the whole team, he had a stinker in the FA cup final.

This season, and the following season, Liverpool had the most talented team in the league. With more discipline and a more organised defence, we could and should have won at least one title in those two years. If you swap James for a more reliable keeper and possibly add one world class CB, then you would have an incredible squad. Our attacking options were insane ... Collymore, Fowler and McManaman were all in their prime ... Barnes and Rush still provided sheer class, McAteer and Redknapp chipped in with crucial goals and assists ... Even Ruddock was a semi-regular threat. But as we've learned form multiple interviews and books in the years since ... the players didn't have the FOCUS needed to plug away over 38 games ...

Agreed. Stan had the talent but he was a troubled soul, IMO he needed a better manager to harness his ability and he could have been world class. Roy Evans was a nice enough guy but I don't think he was the best coach. Also, put a better goalkeeper, a decent centre half and a steely centre midfielder in that team and we would have run away with the league because the attacking talent was there. Sadly (pains me to admit it), United had those very players that we needed at the time (Keane and schmeichel especially) and a better manager.

@1980extremeG4 жыл бұрын
@@simonforrest2522 Yep. It has indeed taken a while but the end result is spectacular, we now have a very balanced side where every man works hard, and the trophies have finally begun to roll in. Klopp has been fantastic, a truly special, brilliant manager. And yeah in the past three decades the quality has been there but never complete like you rightly said. It all started with a) the failure of the club to have a long term plan in place to replace an ageing squad at the time of decline (for example Hansen was badly missed) and b) the appointment of Souness. He was a terrible manager who changed too much too soon and his transfers were appalling (selling good players and buying bad ones).

I think he had the tools to have been a world great. I watched him as a southend fan, Stan had the same tools that R9 Ronaldo had. Maybe not quite at his level (who is?) but pace power control, 2 feet great in air, happy running at goal or with back to goal, fantastic striker of the ball (as seen by how many goals he got from outside the box). Doesn't get the credits he deserved for his assists and vision either. He and fowler one of the best pairings I've witnessed

Possibly my favourite season as a Liverpool fan. Despite it ending in the worst disappointment imaginable at Wembley, the journey getting there was worth it. The Liverpool Man U rivalry was ramped up to 11. I just wish Fergie allowed his team to play football instead of chess in the cup final because the league games between us that season had been electric! Fowler, Collymore and McManaman were terrorising defences and scoring for fun. Granted, our defence was an absolute joke. Even if The Spice Boys tag was meant as a pejorative, it felt good to be a fashionable team again.

They had came back from 2-0 to make it 2-2 and the manager urged his team to play it safe and waste time than push for the winner. Needless to say it was the wrong information and in _typical Citeh fashion.._ they shot themselves in the foot and got relegated..🤣😆😂😅
