3:50 Thats correct - it was actually planned to happen in December 2023, but has been now pushed back for an undisclosed amount of time. There was also meant to be a service from Liverpool to Shrewsbury on the same route. On the bright side though, it's back to hourly instead of 2 hourly from December.

Have you seen the new Merseyrail Class 777 that some of them have entered service with more coming into service throughout this year and next year onwards. And not forgetting Headbolt Lane station that will be the terminus for the new Merseyrail trains that will operate on battery power.

Had my first 230 today. Nice trains and don't feel like tube trains in the table seats. Downside was the major leak from a roof-mounted water tank... you need a train at about 8am/10am/2pm/4pm from Shotton to Bidston on the corresponding around 8.30/10.30/2.30/4.30 from Bidston to Wrexham (Monday - Friday) if you want a 230.

Excellent video,. One possibility for a future video could be Southport to Wigan without using Northern I think the fact that the train from Shotton to Bidston was a class 150 and not a 230 may have been a blessing in disguise, the 230s on the Borderlands are still notoriously unreliable and timekeeping has been woeful

I always enjoy your videos, and keep trying for that elusive 230. I got on it the other week and it was a fab train although got talking to the conductor who mentioned that they have trouble with the doors which causes delays. I'm with you on the 150s though, awful awful trains! Frankly I'd rather have a pacer back than a 150. At least the pacers had decent windows.

Technically Nick there is a 3rd way of getting to Chester from Liverpool or from Chester to Liverpool. If you want to avoid TFW or Northern services but go via the Halton Curve then you can do part fare journeys on steam railtours. I did this myself in July of this year traveling from Chester to Liverpool on a steam tour hauled by 45690 Leander. The fare from Chester to Liverpool was just £10.

Some of the TfW Liverpool - Chester services do extend to Wrexham although the original plan was to make the service hourly with every other service extending to Llandudno and the services inbetween these extending to Cardiff. This plan though I'm led to believe is currently being reviewed.

Someone mentioned the new station at Headbolt Lane today; and I wondered if that would be a potential venue for one of your pointless journeys; I heard it's going to have a line in each direction, but don't know if they're on different levels or anything. But it would be extra fun if you could do a pointless journey starting with the very first train out of a new station. (Have they announced an actual date yet? If they have, I can't find it)

Not really. N Wales is mostly served by the Holyhead line and thanks to a fantastic connection from Chester to Liverpool it's much easier to go via Chester to get to the airport. Especially as the Bidston route doesn't operate nearly as frequently and ceases operations in the evenings.

The additional pleasure (for you!!) would to have some time in South Wales. If you have to do an overnight I recommend The Royal Hotel in Cardiff, and the Old Arcade Pub nearby (St Johns Street)

For example, the history of the Halton Curve on this route, if you wanted to go to Ellsmere Port avoiding Merseyrail, there are very few Northern rail trains, that 150's are better than 142's that used to do the route. Also could you show the monetary difference between using Merseyrail and not using Merseyrail?

I haven’t started watching the video yet, but im hoping im right in guessing that the only viable way of getting to the Wirral from Liverpool is the Lime street to Chester TFW service via Frodsham, then changing for a service headed from Chester to Wrexham General or Shotton, then catching the borderlands line from Wrexham/Shotton to Bidston? Ok, so Northern Trains is no longer doing a direct service between Liverpool Lime Street and Ellesmere Port on the Wirral. That's rubbish. Also, you could've just got off at Neston the first station on the Wirral 2 stops after Shotton. Job done.

You’ve never been to Hoylake. Hoylake and West Kirby areas are quite affluent. The Royal Liverpool gold club is situated between these towns off Meols Drive which is highly regarded. You are thinking of Birkenhead, which is a working class town nearby. Hoylake is a small seaside town, generally not regarded as typically working class.
