My god , the film is the same age as me. I was brought up in the same surroundings. No bathroom No electric light out side toilet, with a candle my cousins would take me too. Grandad in one room Aunt Vic Uncle George in another. Uncle George was decorated at Tobruk. My father, six years in North Africa. Uncle Len was torpedoed SIX times in the North Atlantic. We all lived like that and it wasn't even up North. As a child I thought every body lived like it didn't know any better. Good Good People from all over the world lived here. Later I would learn that others would say don't go down there it's a right rough area. They knew what was right and what was wrong. We had a labour Government and Trade Unions to improve our living conditions. The NHS and wonderful wonderful dedicated Councillors and Teachers. Mr Smith our Sunday school Methodist minister. A giant of a man. Education. We looked after one another neighbours were trusted that looked after us children. My Grandmother was a local Midwife. This film brought back many heart felt memories. Portraying reality, it did a good job, and should be shown as part of a school curriculum. Thanks for posting.

I left my birth city of Liverpool fifty six years ago. Apart from the accents, the director nailed this one. The set design was exceptional. So many Liverpool landmarks, made me homesick. A great production.

Ferry cross the Mersey? British films of the 50's tended to be comedic, courageous or quirky... This one was exceptional almost like Tennessee Williams and What a shifty eyed lying slag Robert Newton plays... A little too close to his real life.. Excellent film!

What excellent actors, all of them! Quality movies... sure, with all the new movies with CGI and animation techniques etc.. all good but.. sit down and watch the oldies and you’ll find a new respect for humble beginnings and what real actors look like in action. NO special effects, just raw talent. ❤️

I began listening to this film because it was there on the list of choices. When the Father showed up on the doorstep of the family he had abandoned, I was ready to leave, but stayed a little longer. The narrative unfolding kept causing me to stay. When the murder scene opened I was confused , but stayed just a little longer. Police at the apartment , daughter one and daughter two, struggling to make a better life and then the hopelessness of all their circumstances swept through like a tidal wave - and I found myself thinking, what a great story, who wrote this ? This is an excellent slice of life captured by a group of very talented people. Thank you. 6/2022 USA.

Richard Burton early film career . You notice how high pitched his voice is here in this 1950 film ? 2 stories I have read . 1)born Richard Jenkins, the 12th of 13 children, Burton was brought up in a Welsh-speaking home . His father Philip taught him how to lose his Welsh accent . Also Philip would take Burton to the mountains and make shout Shakespearean speeches for hours and hours. It was a residential vocal boot-camp that went on every day for three years. 2) The young RIchard Jenkins i.e. Richard Burton would go the oceanfront and just scream at the waves . However he changed his voice by 1960 Burton got his baritone-bass , stentorian(loud) voice which he became recognizable and famous at least here in the US .

Simple, subtle, sublime really; maybe the best of Richard Burton, along with "Rebecca". I have never seen or heard of this movie in my last 61 years here, and these B & Ws w/ UK accents are all I can watch since I had a 9hr round of brain surgery. Films like these that we rarely saw in the US when I was a kid are quite wonderful, and help me understand why many of us here still the the UK as our mother country, even though my parents were Swedes and Germans, second generation. Thanks mr grekko, without the web & people like you posting stuff like this (after a 40ml dose of oxymorphine, with a pinch of clonodine and a couple ibuprophine), my last 8 months of healing a titanium skull patch may have been a lot more difficult... all the best man, for you and yours!

I was born in Liverpool in 1943. I never have had a so called "Scouse" accent. Nor did my Mother, or my father, or my grand parents, or any member of my extended family. There was a local intonation of course, as exampled by Arthur Askey, or Ted Ray, who both lived in Liverpool, and that intonation, might be termed Liverpudlian, but it mainly described the place of origin rather than the accent. I think Rex Harrison came from the area as well. The heavy Scouse accents only became prevalent later. Even the Beatles had only moderate accents. The old term for a male from Liverpool was: a "Dicky Sam!" And for the female: "Tilly Mint". My mother sometimes referred to my sister as "Tilly Mint, when correcting her. I saw this film years ago, but I think much more of it now. The scene in the prison's room between the Son, the Father, and the Mother, was very poignant. Very fine professional acting indeed. Many thanks for posting From the west coast of Scotland.

@@michaelwertzy9808 I've seen those slums close up, from shortly after this picture was made: a lot of those old properties were life-expired and poorly-maintained by their rentier owners: the houses had thin walls and leaky roofs and inadequate plumbing and -sewers; electricity was an afterthought (some still had gas for lighting). The inhabitants had to live cheek-by-jowl with the entrenched insects, rats and mice. They were often small and poorly-heated, the houses packed together to give the maximum rental-income to their owners: children had nowhere to play safely outside or near their homes, and the factories of the day threw out all kinds of pollution to poison their localities.

Thank you for sight of the old overhead railway again. Like Richard, below, left about the same time, but I was back on contract when the strikes killed the docks. From where I worked, I could see the ships queued up in Liverpool Bay. Another sight never to be seen again!

Thank you very much for uploading this movie. It is quite a multifaceted tear jerker of a story. I am surprised that Avis Scott wasn't credited with the lead which was given to the actor portraying the father who, in my view is a secondary antagonist character. She went on to a long career. Thanks again!

Love the old black and whites. Movie was somewhat documentary, good long shots of the docks and surrounding districts and some social commentary on the time. Thank you so much.

Kathleen Harrison was in many fine GB films including The Huggets Trilogy, and the TV series, 'Mrs. Thursday'. She was always fun to watch.

Thanks for mentioning those films. I'm from "across the pond" so I am unfamiliar with her work. I always DO enjoy the common folks of Britain -- sorry I can't say the same about Charlie and his mom and dad. . .and grandmother . . .and sister. But Diana, SHE was a "class act" whom even we, across the pond, loved and admired.

Really enjoyed this film. What I really like is the credits are shown at the begining and in approx 2 mins. Unlike today when shown at the end and take up best part of half hour. :-))

Possibly because, depending on the type of film more people are involved in the production, and everyone is credited who contributed, would you have it that some are not credited, also being at the end you can just stop it or leave the cinema, though I think that's rude really.

lol, yeah...even the errand guy who runs out for coffee between takes wants his name in lights. daughter of a friend worked in the film industry in new york...not on screen, not even anywhere near the set, but her name appeared in the credits after many a movie. more lol, can't remember her vocation.

@@nigelbutterfield8533 Rich irony: so much of high-digital tech today with hundreds of crew and backroom staff yet the outcome, most of the time, is garbage.
