I saw Alex playing against Sheffield Wednesday in August 1965 at Goodison. I saw him score a great hat track against the team that had beaten us the week before when you had two games against the same opposition in early August. I was in my first job in Liverpool City Centre Its often not mentioned that he played superbly against Wednesday in the FA Cup final at the end of that season. Alex could have helped the great side in the late 60s if Catterick hadn't have sold him in 1968. His skill, vision, and intelligence off the ball might have brought more than one trophy to the 1968- 70 side. A marvellous player who I the privilege of meeting at the Everton Foundation dinner at the Adelphi in the last decade.

@last of the mohawks That's absolutlely true. I can remember playing my first game for my school football team as a 7 year old in 1963. It was a bitterly cold Saturday morning, the pitch was frozen and the football was a laced up leather ball, and when the ball hit you it stung. Back then shin guards were an absolute must, something you never see players wear anymore. But it didn't put me off, loved the game and still do.

i saw Alex Young at Goodison for first time in 1967. when he ran at defenders he swerved one way and then the other and it was if the ball was stuck to his boot by velcrose. amazing player.

Alex Young won 2 league titles with Hearts in 1958 and 1960, in 58 Hearts scored 132 goals a record that I doubt will ever be bettered

Why didn't earn Alex earn a lot more caps for Scotland? Was it due to them having a superb selection of forwards to choose from? I had heard the Scottish selectors didn't really like picking players for the national team who played over the border.
