The best fly control is to use chickens free ranging in the paddocks, they will eat all the fly larvae and spread the manure to help fertilize the field. Check out Justin Rhodes channel for info on that and rotational grazing!

Our baby turkeys were raised by a chicken/hen. They are all grown up now and humongous compared to the foster mom chicken. The hen doesnt want to leave them. We tried returning her to the chicken coop but she runs back to her monster turkey "babies" now a yr old. She bosses them all around still, like mom's do. Its pretty funny.

Learning the hard way. My landlord was a city boy farmer. 150 acre field 30 head Wanted to move them to the second field. I tried to tell him. 3 people aren't near enough in a field that big. He chased them cows over every inch of that big field. I stopped, propped up and watched and laughed just a whole lot. Next week, he T posted a lane and a funnel. It still wasn't easy but we got it done.

Evan, you are both doing a remarkable job. A lot of work and money vested into this way of life but really nothing compares to it as far as your own personal achievements. Yes, you will receive suggestions from people having experiencing exactly what you are having now. I always thought that in most cases if you do not personally experience the hardships of learning new things you cannot grasp the importance of it and remember so it will not happen again. The very, very best farmers out there experience these learning curves daily and will as long as they continue to farm, big or small. I know I did, but would not change it for the world. Keep up the great work and stay focused on what you both want.

We use fly traps that are a cap that fits on gallon milk jugs and bait that you put inside. You hang them wherever flies are somewhat of a problem. We hang them at intervals along the fences. We also use QuickBayt® which works very well - like immediately (follow instructions). They spray the animals when the flies are really bad. They keep the spray in a gallon pump sprayer and just spray the bad spots. Good luck!

A head gate is very important...You can set up a round pen with a swing gate to lead them into the alley going to the head gate....with you behind the gate. A shape knife or scalpel and some iodine will take care of castration...When we had cattle that how we took care of em. Heavy posts and cattle panels for the out side, a heavy gate for the swing gate. cattle panels for the squeeze shute...and heavy post for the head gate....

You could try feeding the steer some garlic. I’ve heard that helps keep the flys off them. I grew up in a city suburb. My wife grew up in the country and has a dairy science degree from UW Madison so she’s the one I ask when I have a question about farm life.

I think the best way to control some of the fly problem is to drag the pasture with a chain drag as soon as you move the steers off. This breaks up the cow pies and also improves the pasture. With these small pastures and a 4 or 6 foot wide drag it would take you minutes. We did this for decades with our horses and their pasture looked better than our lawn!

One gallon sprayer. Swap the type of chemicals to avoid immunity to the chemical. Tractor supply has several types that can be mixed in the sprayer. Less than a minute a week. Most chemicals last a week or two. Spray while they are eating the grain treats. Permethrin is my favorite.

For fly control, farmer Tyler of the Farmer Tyler Ranch YT channel has begun using Redmond mineral blocks with garlic. The garlic is what eliminates flies. He's had good results with these blocks and has been able to stop using chemical insecticides. Worth a try, I think.

If you want a natural approach to fly control, try apple cider vineger/water/dawn dish liquid/ = parts -spray bottle or pump style sprayer that sprays a distance. This will help for several days then re-apply. Moving them often away from the manure will help as well.

Spray some permethrin 10 on the line of their backs. You can find it at TSC or Rural King and many feed stores carry it. I’ve been doing this for a long time to help the fly problem in the summer and it works wonders. Just buy a hand pump spray and mix it up following the directions on the back and spray it about once every week or so depending on how bad the flies are.

Around here, people use fly tags in their ears. I have heard there is also a wormer than you can give them that also helps with fly control as a side effect. If the flys aren’t properly managed, they can have problems with pink eye. Good luck! A good vet can be a lifesaver!

JudithB We used the sock thing with our horses and cows. All my pastures opened to the barn yard where we fed, and the sock thing hung across an opening to the water. They had to go thru it when going to water. Also put in a wooden post with old metal soda caps screwed to it for them to scratch on without knocking the post over. Could you fence in your shooting range for more graze and so you dont have to mow it???? We built a corral with cow panels at the water gate, added a wooden chute and bought a head gate. There was enough room for the truck and trailer, or just release them into the barn yard. It worked well for us when worming or vacinating and working on wounds.

If you're only going to do a few beef a year then just get a head gate. Install some heavy posts in the ground to install the head gate on. Similar to a good corner post setup but in line, concrete , and the panels you bought. A squeeze shoot is pretty expensive.
