Majority of the time when a mobile home or manufactured home is damaged during a hurricane it's because of the screen enclosures and the carports not the mobile home or manufactured home itself unfortunately the added on screened enclosure or carports pulls a mobile home apart when the wind catches a hold of the carport or patio. Codes really need to be changed for structural Integrity of added on features like carports and patios. Especially when they are made out of aluminum. They work like sales on a sailboat.

I would guess that Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda would see relatively lighter damage compared to the rest of Southwest Florida, especially wind damage. Hurricane Charley destroyed Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda back in 2004. I would hope that after Hurricane Charley those two towns rebuilt to a much higher building standard for extreme winds. Now storm surge flooding is a different story of course. Hurricane Ian is most definitely a full-fledged test to see how well those stricter building standards held up!

What is it that makes hurricanes category 4 instead of category 3? A large part of the story is the warmer water that provides energy to the storm. And of course warmer water is a feature of a warming planet. Actual, real-life measurements based on both land- and satellite-based instruments taken over many decades now show a decade by decade trend in rising global average temperatures. So the TREND, on average, would be a higher probability of stronger hurricanes and other extreme weather events. A shorthand summary would go something like this: It’s pretty simple. A warming planet causes WORSE WEATHER EXTREMES: … Warmer air & water => (leading to) stronger hurricanes, more humidity, heavier rain, and heavier floods. Hotter air & topsoil => more heatwaves, more evaporation, more drought, and more wildfires. Hotter Arctic => less ice, less albedo (reflectivity), much less ice. That's the way it works. It is simple physics. The evidence can be seen worldwide. Expect more of the same, only worse.
@Yarmox2 жыл бұрын
Barometic pressure is what determines the category rating. There are many factors which create a strong storm, but the strongest on record to make fall in Florida is still the labor day hurricane of 1935.

Interesting theories here, but it’s the upper level wind speeds that determine the category rating. Had the wind picked up in Ian another 5mph, it would have been bumped up to Cat 5, even with the same barometric pressure.
@RussCR51872 жыл бұрын
@@schoolingdiana9086 Are you suggesting that there's no relationship between the extra energy provided by warmer water and the wind speeds used to give a rating to the hurricane?
