Troy.. Looks like the Bukh single cylinder 10HP diesel on my Swanson 30 needs a rebuild. It is seawater cooled. The most likely outcome is to buy a like for like replacement which will slot in place. Bukh does a changeover but it means I have to transport the new engine down to Melbourne from Sydney and send the old one back up to them. My brother is suggesting if I plan on keeping the boat for a long time I should consider a double cylinder Nanni, or Volvo Penta or a Yanmar with fresh water cooling. These would obviously be a lot more expensive but quieter and probably more powerful but with fresh water cooling less maintenance. I wont be a live a board as my better half is NOT a sailor so I will be restricted to chugging around Port Phillip Bay and maybe slipping around to Western-port Bay. Hopefully I will be able to go across Bass Strait to King Island or down the Prom but that's probably as far as I can realistically expect. I will value your opinion on this.
@FreeRangeLiving5 жыл бұрын
The Clansman came with a Buhk diesel like yours. 20 years ago, they swapped it out with the Yanmar 2GM20C that's in her today. Seawater cooling is less maintenance. Just swap out knackered anodes instead of a tank of coolant and heat exchanger cores to descale. If you do go seawater cooled, plumb a hose fitting and isolation valve into the seawater intake side of the cooling circuit. When you come back to the berth, clip on a hose and run fresh water through the engine before closing the seacocks and leaving the vessel. You will have to wash her down anyway. More importantly, make your stern arrangement dripless. Volvo do a nice 1" dripless seal that's simple and effective.
@andrewkeir22825 жыл бұрын
Free Range Sailing That's a great idea with the flushing system It has a strange arrangement with the engine in front of the mast with a very long prop shaft. I had to get bearings and universals replaced in that. The arrangement means no forward v berth but as my wife doesn't come sailing that's not a problem for me. I don't have the mechanical knowledge or skills working on engines. Luckily my brother has.
@andrewkeir22825 жыл бұрын
My pen has a fresh water tap so it will be a simple matter to run that hose and flush her each time. I replaced the anode around 6 months ago and it already needs replacement with not a lot of use of the motor so it is something I will have to keep my eye on.
@FreeRangeLiving5 жыл бұрын
There may be a bit of stray current leaking around your pen through the surrounding water attacking the anode. It's pretty common in power supplied marinas etc. You're an engineer so I hesitate to tell you but don't skimp on the isolation valve for that fresh water input branch. A good, ball valve in 316 if you have the space, preferably with a simple lock to avoid opening with a bump. It is another avenue for sea ingress into your little ship. Another benefit though. When the engine is running, a short hose attached to this fitting is now a suction line that can be run to any compartment in your boat to rid it of water, whether fighting a lleak or just sucking out soapy water from a good scrubbing of a locker. A blocked toilet that needs emptying before repairs? Easy fix. Just put the intake before the strainer.
@andrewkeir22825 жыл бұрын
@@FreeRangeLiving Excellent idea, Diesel cooling bilge pump. But only in emergencies, I reckon that the strainer would get blocked pretty quickly. If I locate the pipe/valve at high level well above the water line it will be easier to access and even it does get knocked the water will not enter my boat allowing it slip below the gentle waves in the pen. I could then permanently attach a suitable size length of hose and before shutting the engine I hook into shore water, and then isolate the sea water and run on for a few minutes before shutting down. I assume the diesel should be running when flushing to allow the thermostat to be open and the lovely fresh water to reticulate through all the passages. Of note, when we pulled off the head the water passages were very heavily blocked, so even though the now deceased previous owner was a diesel expert at one the major diesel engine companies, this little engine was not in very good condition.

I have a lot of tools, dive gear etc. I need to move to the boat, but can only carry so much each trip. Some in huge duffel bags, some in my carry-on and my books get mailed....Some stuff I’ll have to bite the bullet and buy in the Caribbean. It getting very real and exciting. Thank again guys.

We went through Solway pass in our 20ft trailer sailer when we were in the Whitsundays last year. QLD parks did a huge burn on Haselwood island so visibility was around 100m if you were lucky, just after the tide change so the current wasn`t too bad, but the amount of tour boats going in or out from Whitehaven and looming out of the smoke kept things interesting. Those multi-tools are great on fiberglass, clean cut and not too much itchy dust flying everywhere. I thought they were a bit of a gimmick until I borrowed the one from work, bought one of my own on the next trip shopping. Keep up the great work.

You can delay the epoxy kicking by keeping it cold. Float your tub of thickened epoxy in a bucket of ice water. It will stay open almost indefinitely. If ice isn't available then sea water will help even in a warm place like that. Thanks for another great video!

I hope I understand this correctly and you are likely to already be aware of this Troy. But when Jason Wynn of Gone with the Wynn's did an episode on solar power some investigation he performed established that any shadow across solar panels, even if only one cell, can essentially negate output for the entire array.
@michaelsimpson97795 жыл бұрын
Not sure if anyone else's pointed this out but for structural integrity, you want your first glass laminate layer slightly larger than the fillet inner circumference, then building width on the subsequent layers as you said later in the video, I think earlier in the video (8:20) you spoke about laying it up in the opposite fashion, wider to narrow.....I could be wrong.

you guys love the fiberglass.. Great job as usual. And as usual, you always overbuild your repairs. But then again what is the price of knowing stuff has been done right? 1 Que. the FW tank looks integral & with you refitting it & cleaning it, including painting are you going to use potable water safe paint for the inside of the fw tank? It will make a difference to your health rather than 2 part epoxy.

The previously repaired hole in the tank just goes to show the safety benefit of sealed integral water tanks. If the boat had a separately installed tank, when that damage occurred it would have meant a sunken boat. It makes you wonder why boat builders are so resistant to integrated tanks.
@FreeRangeLiving5 жыл бұрын
I think that damage may be from a yard accident in the past. Just has that point injury look to it like machinery. Still, the comment is absolutely true and I have considered it a great safety design feature. It's also why I have a separate 40L emergency tank.
