Such an immense talent. I'm still heartbroken at her tragic end, but all the could'ves and would'ves won't change a thing. So, I'll continue to celebrate her life and wonderful gift. In 1985, as a high schooler, I played in a small jazz ensemble that had a running gig at Yoshi's Nitespot in Oakland. We played weekdays early evening shows playing mostly standards with only a few original songs. I remember a Thursday night gig where a woman with a HUGE hat was sitting in front of the stage with a few friends and we had just started playing Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair and just as I was going to start the lyrics, this enormous voice boomed from in front of the stage. This happened rarely, but one of the stage crew gave her a mic (she really didn't need it) and we switched from our standard charting of the song to follow what she was doing- including a key change. When she ended the song, she was introduced by the MC who mentioned her three nights of sold out performances the following three days at Yoshi's. She walked up to the stage and looked at our chart books picked a dozen songs and said, "Well come on, we've got a set to play." Almost 40 years later, that event is still amongst my most treasured memories. I met her only once more, in 1994 when I was working as a sound engineer and she stared at me for nearly 5 minutes trying to figure out who I was. Then she broke out laughing and told her band I was one of the kids from 'that show where I took over their set.' Apparently, we became one of her humorous stories to share. I can live with that.

Had the opportunity to see her in concert at my homecoming at Hampton in 92 with my mom and sisters, great memories priceless. Amazing voice and joked a little on stage seeming down to earth.

If you could have realized the world needed you; for the jewels I saw in you embodied that of a beautiful, gracious lady with a voice like no other. You are truly missed.
