aww man, this is how I'll always remember Ms. Phyllis Hyman. Standing tall, beautiful, and statuesque with that incredible voice. Even the whistle she does here is off the chain. Such an immense talent. I'm still heartbroken at her tragic end, but all the could'ves and would'ves won't change a thing. So, I'll continue to celebrate her life and wonderful gift. As I'm watching this, I realize that she, David Brenner, and Billy Preston (on organ) are all gone. So glad we have time capsules like these to keep their memories alive.

In 1985, as a high schooler, I played in a small jazz ensemble that had a running gig at Yoshi's Nitespot in Oakland. We played weekdays early evening shows playing mostly standards with only a few original songs. I remember a Thursday night gig where a woman with a HUGE hat was sitting in front of the stage with a few friends and we had just started playing Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair and just as I was going to start the lyrics, this enormous voice boomed from in front of the stage. This happened rarely, but one of the stage crew gave her a mic (she really didn't need it) and we switched from our standard charting of the song to follow what she was doing- including a key change. When she ended the song, she was introduced by the MC who mentioned her three nights of sold out performances the following three days at Yoshi's. She walked up to the stage and looked at our chart books picked a dozen songs and said, "Well come on, we've got a set to play." Almost 40 years later, that event is still amongst my most treasured memories. I met her only once more, in 1994 when I was working as a sound engineer and she stared at me for nearly 5 minutes trying to figure out who I was. Then she broke out laughing and told her band I was one of the kids from 'that show where I took over their set.' Apparently, we became one of her humorous stories to share. I can live with that.

Why do we not have someone of her style, grace, and God-given talent anymore ..... I almost can't stomach r&b anymore .... because this type of next level music is no longer as prevalent as it was doing the era of Phyllis Hyman, David Peaston, Gerald Alston, Angela Winbush .... omg!

I swear, 30 yrs. later and you can still hear her pain. Hers is so very tragic, so very sad. She was so stunning. She had such power, such control in her voice. There's been nobody like her since.

There was such power in her voice...she could just hummmmm and it would be beautiful....What she had was a gift...Many have said it was drugs, it was this, and it was that....Well it was a whole lot of things most of all a very broken heart...I always thought she sang sad songs until I realized that she was going through hell in her life...and that came out in her music....she was baring her soul...The gift that God gave her is silent...like so many other God gifted and talented people who believe the lie....Gone too soon, not forgotten and missed by us all....
