Has your family ever judged you for simplifying?

Thanks for discussing my question. I believe in simple living like wearing simple clothes such as black t-shirt and blue jeans. However, my mom always advises me to change my wardrobe with colorful clothes. She also says not to wear black jeans because they supposedly produce negativity in me.

Yes, some do but different angles. Some thnk i am tight fisted, some think im poor, or boring, or reclusive. Not too worried, it tells you more about the way others think.

I am fairly minimal. I had a friend move in and she covered my house in STUFF. I put a lock on my bedroom door to keep her out of my space (she said I needed to decorate it better i.e. more stuff). She was constantly buying me things to 'decorate' my space, my life. etc... I moved and eventually sold the house. When I moved, I took everything I wanted. I told her that I wanted everything else sold or given away. I paid her to sell the house and get rid of all the 'stuff'. I went back to finalize everything and there was all this STUFF that she felt I needed to keep! I piled it all in the garage and sent out the free cycle message and it was all gone in about 2 hours. The house was still very dusty from the lack of cleaning from all the 'stuff'. All this to say that although I can respect anothers desire to pile their life up with stuff, I don't want it pushed onto me and it's frustrating to deal with those type of people.

Through watching your documentaries and KZbin. We as a family have started to live as minimalists. Our shed in the yard was floor to ceiling full of stuff, and it is now gone, including the shed. We have been through everything in the home using all your advice, and we feel so much more free and so much better mentally. Our family n friends are shocked and have questioned how we can live like this. We get, what if you need it in the future 😂 I tell them to watch your documentary. We live in the UK and our home is small, but the benefits of minimalism are huge! Thank you guys so much 😊

My fiancée introduced me to your channel as we together love to explore, especially him as although obviously I know what minimalism is, never did I think I'd live that way. But my old ways have at times bordered on hoarding and I don't think anyone could disagree that this way was a recipe for lot's of frustration and frankly a feeling of being trapped by so much just "stuff". Minimalism as my fiancee would explain lovingly and clearly, well it just feels much much healthier for us than the opposite.

The only problem is if other persons in your family want a lot of things and expect YOU to manage them, that is not at all fair. If the children are small anf the other parent wants them to have a lot of things that person need to be the one managing most of it.

I love my stuff streamlined and minimal, my husband likes the house to feel "lived in" and to him that means seeing his stuff. I'm the primary housekeeper (for want of a better name for it!😂) so the compromise is that communal surfaces are kept clear for easy cleaning, kitchen counters, dining table etc.... Like items are kept together, for example all our dvds are on one bookcase in the lounge, books are in another room - those bookcases are conveniently located behind a door, so limits my visual clutter as I walk into the room, I can also position myself in the room so I have my back to them! The view from my bed has to be clear when I wake up so my husband has a chair out of my sight line for clothes he wants to wear again and such. His medley of items are displayed behind the doors of a glass display cabinet so he can see them but they do not demand my attention for cleaning etc. These situations are geared up for me to reduce my workload and overstimulation, but I think do manage to make my family feel like they can have their stuff too.

This conversation/advice was so profound to me that I joined your Patreon page. Thank you so much for helping see how I can still appreciate my personal space within my home despite my family's clutter.

My wife and me have recently split. She and our grown up daughter have moved out but left thousands of bits of cluttter for me to sort out either for charity or to be thrown away. It's a major headache.

I liked the bit when the guy was talking about recording studio gear. It would be cool to hear an episode on GAS (gear acquisition sysndrome) related to music and other hobbies.

Yes only if my family appreciated my preferences. I'm a minimalist & a vegan. And most times it feels lonely.

Familiy visit and friends you live with temporarily. No big deal, there's an end point (stoic minimalist here ). Having a maximalist partner, though, it's tough.

To force someone to give you money to watch the whole video goes against what you just talked about… Just think about it.

Unlike those of us who have different lifestyles and work, they have every right to say their work adds value and request an exchange. I’ve been following them since 2011 when they had a free ticket tour, to paying for a ticket to watch their first documentary and paid for their books. And paid for their Patreon because it added value when I needed it- I left when I couldn’t pay and no longer saw the value of the paid version. Let your “critique” make sense, instead of trying to make a pithy comment that doesn’t add value at all whatsoever. They know the value of their time, skills and insight- what of your own? Do you lead your life or create art/tools or offer skills/services that deserve compensation?

Why should all their content be available to you for free? They don't have ads on their videos, so these are not monetised. There are 100's of these bite sized videos available, and their editing means you don't feel like you've missed half the discussion. They just have more available if you want to dive deeper into the discussion. At the end of the day only you can decide what adds value to your life and if joining their patreon doesn't, I'm sure that's not going to cause offence.
