I felt bad for Tamera when she spoke from her own experience of having to be on her own at 21 with Tia while her brothers got to stay at home pass that age, it is a double standard. Loni just didn't get it, its not about the twins having each other to lean on its about their parents giving the sons an advantage that should have been given to their daughters.

@stryfetc1 True but at 18 the kids (or I guess young adults) should be helping somewhat in whatever ways they can. I turned 20 a month ago and can say at least 40-45% of the kids at my University are commuters from home. It's almost impossible or at least back-breaking to sustain a life for yourself while balancing studies, social life, dating life, and working a job that's really only gonna pay $7-$12 an hour. I pay what bills are managable for me at this point in my life and my parents pitch in to help with the remainder. I will say tho that I feel a little bit of pressure not being out of the house by now so I'm moving out next Fall semester lol.

not everyone has the luxury of healthy family relationships. Or even just a family that wants the best for you, even if they wouldn't know how to provide it. I've tried my best to repair relationships with my parents, but it's draining to be around ppl who have hurt and abused you. Being dependent on them is the last thing I want, no matter how beneficial it would be financially. Of course I keep my relationship w my parents as respectful and friendly as possible, mostly because my younger siblings need me. I'm 17, I love my parents to death and I'm a very calm and peaceful person (even around them), so everything from the outside seems fine. But I just can't stay after 18, trust me if i could i would. My parents would propably kick me out anyway for no other reason than just to feel like they have power over me.. even my aunt who is in her 50s can't stand my parents, or her own parents. So not everything seems to heal with time, because time doesn't always change people.

I would love to live by myself if I had a full time, long term, non poverty wage job. I literally have no other choice. Having a degree (which I do have) or simply just working harder makes no one pay me more money or give me more hours than they are willing to give at these businesses I've worked for. seygra20 I know that many people are able to save living at home, I was just saying that the problem that I referred to above is one that I never hear anyone talk about even though it’s a reality for many families, especially families made up of immigrant parents. The assumption is always that adult children are living at home to save money when the truth is many adult children are living at home to help their parents and siblings with money, rather than saving for themselves. I can’t tell you how many people I know who stayed at home longer than they wanted to because they would rather give money that they would have paid to a landlord for rent to their parents instead.

i think now more than ever, it is so important to save your money as much as you can. some people don't have the opportunity to be able to live with their parents (abusive families, needing to move away for a specific school program or a job, etc) but for those who do have the opportunity to, i think that's amazing. who cares about their age? as long as the child isn't a burden to their parents and can contribute in some way than i don't see a problem. making your child move out at 18 (or in my case, kicking them out on the street when you know they don't have a lot of money) is not teaching the child anything. you're making your child struggle and possibly resent you for no reason. allowing them to stay at home for longer lets them save their money and be more financially stable and prepared to handle all the monetary responsibilities that come with getting older. it's honestly the more responsible thing for a parent to do for their child. we need more parents who want to set their kids up for success, not failure and unnecessary hardship.

Honestly, I couldn’t wait to move out. I moved out of state for college when I was 18. Briefly came back to the nest after I graduated. After a brief spell of getting a job and putting money away I moved out again. But then when my dad died my mom started struggling financially so I moved back in to assist with that in a roommate situation so she wouldn’t wind up on the street. But we’re definitely both independent adults with our own incomes and we’re each carrying our weight, so I don’t see any problem in a situation like that. It’s when there’s mooching going on that I can see issues.

@kejuanlynette85314 жыл бұрын
Many cultures have adult children living in the same household as the parents. I think this is one of the reasons America has so much (consumer) debt. . . Moving out after HS or not being able to return home after college creates an environment where (if not properly prepared) people get mired in debt. As someone also noted in the comments, the student loan debt is basically at crisis level so, income needs to go up DRAMATICALLY to compete with the cost of living and/or cities need to have more affordable rent OR people need to remove the stigma of young adults living at home with your parents.
