What boggles my mind is how this type of thing is becoming a movement to be praised when it's based, in all honestly, on the fact that most of the people living that way do so because they can no longer afford housing. This is especially true for young people and retired people. The tiny house, van life, etc movements came into being due to the horrid disparity in wealth distribution, stagnant minimum wages, overwhelming education debt, and cost of utilities, and cost of living.

@@bbjjbb61 I agree with you partly. However, that's not what I'm talking about. "Good" choices don't guarantee good results and, conversely, "bad" choices don't always result in negative results. However, what I'm talking about is wealth distribution which is more complicated. Since you're online, look up that term "wealth distribution" and you'll get more info.

We used to camp in a tent, in the mountains of Oregon, during snow season. First we scattered two bales of hay under the tarp that we set the tent on. Then we placed a layer of cardboard under the air mattress. Air mattresses get uncomfortable with just a sheet, so we used a blanket, then feather bed topped with mattress pad and sheets. I used two down comforters and a sleeping bag to cover with, plus slept in sweats. We never used any heaters inside of the tent, and slept nice and warm.

Car living by choice is gentrified homelessness. Not that it's wrong for people to do or anything but I'm just saying I get what you mean. People should choose to live however they like and I see the appeal of van/car/travel life for sure. But those who don't have a choice about it have a very different experience for sure.

I've had a fair amount of experience with this because I was an OTR driver for several years and the way I delivered the vehicle was by driving it and none of the companies I drove for paid enough for it to make sense to stay in a motel every night. I delivered small trucks, cars and occasional motorhomes. It doesn't get that cold while it is snowing. The time to expect really cold temperatures is on a clear night after it's been snowing during the day. Having a good sleeping bag and a sleeping pad is very important. I sometimes ran the engine stay warm at night. Another thing I frequently parked at truck stops for the night. That gave me access to showers and food. I sometimes parked and Supermarket parking lots for a night but if you do that make sure you talk to the management of the supermarket 1st and also make sure you don't park right up by the front doors because they won't like that. Obviously there are no showers at supermarkets that you at least have access to food. I hope anybody considering living on the road finds this helpful.

I live in upstate N.Y., and winters here are COLD. I worked on a crew at a sugarbush for several years (where maple syrup is made). We begin tapping the maple trees in late February, usually there's several feet of snow on the ground. At night, we would hike back to the un- insulated sugaring camp on snowshoes. and start a fire in the woodburning cookstove. The fire would always go out after a few hours, and inside the camp would soon become freezing cold. If you sleep in your clothes, and have a good sleeping bag, it's not so bad. People living in northern climates, especially people who work outdoors, farmers, etc., get used to the cold, we have adapted.

More people are realising that living in the car is the future I live in my car and absolutely love it and it saves me £400 a month that I used to pay in rent that I now use to spend on living life eating out and making vlogs To keep your feet warm put a couple of newspapers double folded under your feet which acts as insulation between the cold metal of the car floor and your feet and put your feet in a recycled supermarket carrier bag which acts as draught proofing and prevents cold draught round your feet at night and wear a hat which stops heat leaving your head and feet during a cold night living in a car

From my cold weather camping experience, one big helpful tips is to scrunch up the bottom of your sleeping bag to where your feet are. Sleeping bags are really good at capturing and storing your body heat, but if there is a good with no body parts like the bottom of your sleeping bag, it will stay cold. I was in Scouts when I was a kid and the coldest I slept in then was 19 degrees, in a 2 person tent. My dad had icicles outside his tent in the morning!

A proper mummy bag actually moves with you, almost like a layer of clothes, instead of moving inside it as you do with a large, rectangular bag. Biggest advantage is the mummy has far less volume to warm up with your body heat or a drinking bottle of hot water.

Hey ya'll - I also recommend (while at campgrounds with power outlets) a 25 foot long, 14 gauge extension cord and a hair dryer (Walmart) as a way to warm up when its really cold. Just don't sleep with hair dryer on because of possible burn and fire hazard. Hair dryer only heats and blows air - does not combust and produce carbon dioxide. May God Bless ya'll

If you do that you may as well use a heating blanket. Also, there are batteries you can charge and plug into for the voltage. I've seen a few people use heating blankets when it's under 30 degrees in a van or car if they have access to a plug in, or charge the portable lg battery which lasts overnight for the heating blanket.

A quick easy way to heat up and stay warmish is get the 5 inch emergency candles put one in an empty can that is about 1 and a half inches to 2 inches around the candle. Melt some each into the bottom of the can stick the candle to it and it will throw enough heat to keep you warm in the car. Remember to place the can in a SAFE spot. Good to have the side window cracked also get a Co2 detector/smoke alarm.

I have my Honda 2017 hr-v retro fitted with custom designed camping features including a stand alone separate power system that can feed off the car battery, back up battery or miniature wind turbine and solar connect. I also have all basic tools in trunk for the most common maintenance repairs like alternators, starter, drive belt and inner and outer tie rod tools. I also have high quality tires and 9800 lumen total LED custom lights that project toward the ground to increase visibility at night. Best part is that if you look inside the car, everything looks OEM and you cannot tell that anything has been done to the vehicle. I spent over a year on my designs to produce it that way.
