Hey, I'm a welder and metal fabricator, I could help you put windows in if you want. Do you ever worry about some tweaker locking you in? I would have to have some kind of escape system lol.

Forget the mansion......you have freedom!!!! Just some ideas to think about,,,,, if you have enough electricity get a dehumidifier to cut out the condensation and mold growth. I'm pretty sure they don't use much electricity and can dramatically cut out the moisture. Or maybe get another solar panel, then you could get a tiny air conditioner. Not sure how hard it would be to get a small hole for the air conditioner, but I would do it if i was living in a warm climate. It'll look ghetto, but you could buy a cheap tarp and put it a few feet off the container to block the sun rays or find a material that doesn't look getto. I'm not sure i understood the pesticide thing. Couldn't you just power wash the metal floor. And if the floor is wood, couldn't you just rip out the pesticide wood and put down your own floor?
@rawfoodphilosophy7061

Also forgot.....get some ear plugs for the rain and other noises. It takes a few days to get used to them, i forgot the brand i use but i couldn't live without them!!!!

+RAW FOOD PHILOSOPHY we stayed in a mansion in July and it was so awesome! Haha but what made it beautiful was mostly the outside natural aspects and how they were integrated beautifully into the architecture of the home, especially the giant windows looking out into the lake. And there was a lot of room for privacy and also social gathering. But nature on its own is pretty cool too :) There is a lot we could do with more electric power, but we are trying to keep costs down for now and suffer accordingly for our lack of money. We are trying to shade the wall of the container with a lilikoi trellis we have growing next to it. The sun still hits it from the higher angles though. What we really need is a large roof to cover the whole thing, or partially and add a deck or garden up there to insulate even more. We still have ghetto tarps all over thiugh so we are very familiar with that haha. The pesticides are on the wood that makes up the majority of the floor. It doesn't come off, the only way would be to remove the floors and put in new floor but we are not going to do that because Michael doesn't think it's necessary. And if it was, it would probably be expensive.
@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 6 жыл бұрын
+RAW FOOD PHILOSOPHY we've already gotten used to the sounds outside, the worse thing is making too much obnoxious sounds from inside the container. Opening and closing the doors is especially obnixious, and also walking around in flip flops.
@paultorres8995
@paultorres8995 6 жыл бұрын
OffGridHawaii Michael Pauline there are several options that are low cost to minimize the interior noise which you find obnoxious, Try Ace Hardware or Home Depot and get some wallpaper glue and it comes in a gallon or 5 gallons brush and roller squeegee utility knife. now instead of wallpaper go down to Goodwill or thrift store and purchase a variety of sheets these you will cut into either one foot squares or long strips bigger Square smaller squares triangles your choice your design use your creativity maybe even cut one into the shape of a pineapple or heart or orchid personal touch as to how you want it to look when you apply them directly to the walls of the shipping container maybe a certain pattern around the top Edge of the wall with a different pattern 8 or 9 in below it always looks good all up to you and now if you do that you paint that up or strip and the ceiling one or two colors and from that point down you could paint any color or multiple sponge colors be creative don't forget if you cut out a pineapple as part of the wallpaper paint it make it standout have fun personalize it ,it will feel more like home. .. at Home Depot or Ace Hardware ask for mismatch discount paint maybe a couple different colors, try to use an exterior low Sheen or eggshell acrylic water base this is mold resistant and is very durable,,, side note make sure you use a quality wallpaper glue because of the high moisture content in your area like a bathroom type of wallpaper glue !!! I just remembered Habitat for Humanity has what's called The ReStore not sure if it's located in Kona or Hilo this is the store where everybody donates construction materials new and used that also have paint windows appliances lighting a variety of building materials look online to see where it is located you may find plumbing parts Etc that you can use their in the garden and home. I recently found a brand new stove oven combo for less than $200 it was brand new and came out of a model home, it also come with the propane conversion orifice kit that is taped on the back of the oven what a bonus we installed this at one of our rental homes,,,,, oops okay I'm getting long-winded again just enjoy your day be creative with your home ! and if a big motorhome comes driving up on the property don't shoot they come with tools supplies and plenty of knowledge to help you guys improve build expand your little castle. Laugh out loud now that would be a KZbin show,,,...PAUL

@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 6 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Johnson that sounds nice actually, we just don't have any metal work experience or tools so we just haven't bothered. I'm sure we'd consider it once we make more progress on the construction around the container. Ventilation is so essential.
@bobhoskins9595
@bobhoskins9595 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Small square windows make relying on window bars unnecessary. Just pick a size that is very common there. Also installing them high has many advantages. Its nice having light coming down on you - seems more natural. Consider installing some in the roof perhaps with light diffusers for lots of natural light though if you shade the roof that would be redundant. Mounting high on the walls is good as well to let risen hot air escape.

A couple questions: What do you do at night? Do you close the door and lock yourselves in? Or do you have a way to leave the door part way open but secured so you get some fresh air? How much did your property taxes go up from when you just had land to after adding the contain to the land?

You can borrow, rent, or purchase a grinder at local home depot or Lowe's to cut you some windows and another door just make sure you get the dimensions of doors and windows correct and level also get yourself some grid paper each square = a foot you can draw out the floor plan where everything will windows doors . Put yourselfs a nice coverd deck patiodoor a row of cabinets in for a kithen! do a dormer extension to increase bedroom size, or ad 8-10 feet to one of the 40 ft side INSULATE YOU COULD HAVE A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE SPOT ! film it all we would love to see it!

Thank you for the recommendations :) we have not done any remodelling or extending of the container yet because we are not fully committed to the location it is at on the property and we want to maintain it's integrity until we have a real clear plan of what we wish to do with it. We are leaning towards just starting a new small home from scratch on a different spot and keeping the container as an extra living and storage space.

Your not poor, be patient and I truly believe it will pay off. You have 3 huge acres to work with! Make extra money and rent a section out temporary. I'd love to rent a section and offer some skills. I'm also a musician and want to test my guitar amp in the container at full volume, haha. That would be funny though... wake up all of Hilo, hahahahahhaa
@bobhoskins9595
@bobhoskins9595 4 жыл бұрын
Why not rig a frame around the shipping container and shade it with scrap wood? If you could get free pallets you wouldn't have to pay for most of the wood. You could use a tarp but I'm not sure how the wind is there. Surely you get strong winds occasionally? If you could anchor vertical posts to the container itself you'd have rigidity. But you probably want overhang. Once its shaded I think many of your problems will be solved: Dampness from the rain (though the overall humidity will be the same) and huge temperature variations from sun exposure.

If you are looking to build a shipping container to code in Hawaii County I would advise against it as the county knows nothing about the engineering of a shipping container and makes you meet all the requirements of a stick frame house adding thousands to the cost. I figured I would do it all legal and but the time I'm done I could have put up one of the kit houses available on the island for very little more and had four times the living space.

Civic regulation can kill most any dream. Thank you for sharing. So important to consider. We can have all the dreams imaginable but actually bringing them to fruition without drawing the ire of the local red tape committee can be another matter entirely. This is the reason many people leave cities in the first place; they find them so restrictive to their construction ideas.

You can just put some shade on that wall and roof so the shade absorbs the heat instead of the container. You could make it cheap out of camo or canvas from a military surplus. You'd probably also want at least two of them and make it a double wide. You can make a welder from a couple of microwaves. I saw some Russians do it in flip flops.

I would get a better lock dude. Those locks are very easy to pick. Someone could get in and out without breaking anything. As for the temperature and condensation, you just need the right kind of insulation (a kind that won't allow for mold if correctly installed). Half an hour on the internet should get you going. Noise could also be reduced by proper insulation. The floor could be fixed with... Yep. Proper insulation (and better flooring as a product of that). I'm not trying to be an ass, but a lot of your problems could be fixed with the internet and some tools. It just seems like you were being lazy and then counting the products of your laziness as cons. The only one I'll give you is the dimensions of a standard container. Some people (like myself) will consider that a good thing though. The standard dimensions make it relatively easy to legally transport. It is a shipping container after all.
@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 6 жыл бұрын
You bring up great points. It’s definitely not us being lazy though, it’s us being cheap. Yes most of the cons can be fixed by spending a whole lot of money but then why not just build a regular house? I definitely don’t think you are being an ass. We appreciate the honesty. -mahalo

I am planning on building out of a shipping container as a mobile alternative to an apartment and have done a fair bit of research because of that. I guess if you don't want to use it long term, you don't need to dump that much money into it. I will say that some closed cell spray foam on the inside and an air conditioner are worth your money though. The foam would keep condensation from forming. Considering that you put effort into solar and water, it wouldn't be crazy. If you wanted to have something small and cheap that would last, it would depend on if you plan on leaving it where you build it, or if you want to move it. If you don't plan on moving, you don't need a single shipping container. You could build a much bigger place for not that much extra overall.There are many channels here on youtube that show you how to do just that. It sounds like you guys are going to be there for a while.

Absolutely. And manual juicers. They make sense for many reasons, even in a normal home. It takes a lot of power to grind up something without oxidation and doing it yourself bring a level of control that you just don't have with a machine. Not sure how long it takes though. Wheatgrass takes a while but that's about as tough a vegetable one could possibly consider.

We have a high cube 20 foot container that we did insulate and added vents and we do not have condensation inside. The insulation makes a huge difference and now we have a ceiling fan inside which keeps the air circulating. We had to frame with metal studs before insulating so it has been a long process. When we are finished with it we could have you come over and do a video of our “custom” container. It wasn’t cheap but we’ve worked at it gradually over a couple of years.

Is chrome much better than white? You'd think so but I wonder how well it really works. Surely its more expensive though? For a 45' container that's a lot of paint.
@calgo1711

Have you considered painting the south side white to reflect the sun? Also I read somewhere that anytime you cut a shipping container, it compromises the structural integrity because the strength of its structure comes from the corrugated shape of the sides. So they said you had to build a frame and use beams to secure it. Just something to keep in mind

Add vents around your container house up the top. It will help with the air circulation and brings in the fresh air. Add a security door screen so you can leave it open at night for fresh air. It will keep the mossies and bugs out. Your container house is lovely, Maybe invest in some secondhand corrugated iron to cover the top. You can add a gutter to catch the water too.

Thanks for the tips! There are tiny vents on all four corners at the top I think I’m going to make them a little bigger and install a 12volt fan on one or maybe two of them. Covering the whole container would definitely be great too but maybe a bit expensive. It would be great to catch more water though so probably worth it. 😊

The tick that infected Paulina was from the mainland most likely because she got ill the day after coming back to big island from NY.

hey Michael Pauline good to see that you're both in great health. you have the no-cost option of dampening the rain fall noise on the roof by covering with Palm leaves layered completely a cross then strategically place lava rocks or bamboo poles to keep in place from wind blowing off ! On the sunny side of the wall make your bamboo lattice and weave in Palm leaves I first did this when I built an outside aviary it lasted about 2 years with very little maintenance and then I went with a vinyl heavy-duty awning tarp used for RVs as far as the Heat and mold look into what is called a fantastic vent these are used in the roof of RVs they are 12 volt and would be perfect for your solar and Battery system setup it has forward and reverse fan automatic open and closing during rain look into the different prices different styles although you will have to cut a 14 X 14 in hole and use exterior silicone caulking to seal in place from rain. John that sells the shipping containers should be very familiar with these and if too expensive, keep that coconut and banana handy cuz that will be my service charge to put it in for you guys. I think you may have me convinced on bringing over my 32 foot motorhome and just driving it up to the property and living in it while I build the Cottages , great informative video as always Michael Pauline, Lookout Pauline your sister's Got Game her numbers are climbing up there L.O.L not if she happens to pass you up you better have Michael bust out that hula hoop. Your channel is what I didn't know I needed. Now I will give you some unsolicited opinion. The authentic style and "lead by example" vibe is very refreshing. Many folks on the old KZbin get very tiresome with ideological diatribes and such. I suspect if people are watching two, low tech, off-grid, fruitarians - they likely already "get it." @OffGridHawaii

+Gizmo The Cat With a map it's about a 45 second hike from the container to the toilet, so not too far. At night we bring a light, and when it rains we bring an umbrella. It's a fun adventure every time. If it's an immidiate emergency I guess we could always just pop a squat next to a tree nearby and bury it. We pee in a bucket next to the container so that's never an issue.

One big con i think would be dangerous levels of emf radiation building up and bouncing off the inside of the container walls..That solar inverter and charge controller you guys got in there really pumps that shit out.Along with your laptop and phones..with the doors shut and not having any windows would make it unsafe i would think..I really want to live in a non working refrigerated container because i think its cool and is pre insulated... but im to much of a pussy because i think i would be exposing my self to tons of emf because i want a solar setup and electronic gizmos too..you should get a emf detector,shut the container up ,and test to see what kind of readings you guys get with all your stuff running..just get a cheep emf detector on amazon and test it out ..

Hi there, My question is for Paulena... my daughter also has Lyme disease and has been very ill for almost 3 yrs. May I ask how you contracted it and what treatment you received in getting healthier? PS, I just love your funny laughter. Are you and boyfriend from the mainland too? Thx for both your time, Dean..
@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dean, so sorry to hear your daughter has Lyme. I got sick with Lyme symptoms in the beginning of September of last year while in hawaii. I still don't know how I contracted it but I did spend the summer in the Northeast. I saw a local doctor and was diagnosed by the end of October (my Western blot and Elisa test both came back very positive). The doctor I saw is naturopathic but also uses some Western medicine. For me, she said the best thing would be to get on a 1 month course of doxycycline taking two pills a day. I was hesitant but complied with her treatment because I felt very helpless as you know. In conjunction with the antiobiotics the doctor also prescribed several supplements and herbs. I was taking zinc, ashwaganda, licorice root, Ester-C, grapefruit seed extract, cats claw and several others which I don't remember off the top of my head. Additionally, during the month of november I received two Meyer Push treatments (intravenous vitamins ) to boost all my levels and kickstart my immune system. All of this protocol was done while maintaining a high fruit, mostly raw vegan diet with supplemental vegan protein powder each day. I also rested and slept a lot of the time. By the start of December I was feeling no more muscle/joint pain and was able to move around without trouble. It took me until January to finally start feeling normal and begin to exercise like before. Right now I feel incredible. I lost some extra weight I'd been carrying since before getting sick, and my strength is coming back tenfold. I hope this helps in any way. I would also like to mention that a big part of my healing came from having faith and trusting in God. I cried every night and prayed to the angels for help. A book which really motivated me was Anthony Williams Medical Medium. He doesn't believe Lyme is a tick-borne disease and that it's actually a virus of the herpes family that has the bacteria and parasite as cofactors. Because of this he doesn't condone using antiobiotics and instead suggests herbs and supplements plus diet changes. I took a lot of his advice in addition to using the antiobiotics and that seems to be what worked for me. If you get a chance I highly encourage you to read the book's chapter on Lyme's disease or if you can listen to one of his podcasts on soundcloud (Google sound cloud Anthony William Lyme). It talks about the diagnosis for Lyme and how it can be inaccurate in the first place. If you have more questions you can reach me at aloha.offgridhawaii@gmail.com Sending you and your daughter lots of love!

@@OffGridHawaii I suppose you have so much ventilation with the doors open there that you don't feel the need. Small windows that nobody can craw into that you can leave open would be very good when you're not there. Windows that have a little awning perhaps to protect against rain. Or erect some sort of shade for the entire roof and have overextend over those high mounted windows. If you ever figure out how to make a proper shade for a shipping container you might even be able to patent part of the idea. Surely most people need this no matter where they live. If they don't have a lot of rain they probably have to deal with merciless sun. If they don't have sun they probably have to deal with a deluge of rain at times. Everybody needs shade from the elements. Its fundamental. Insulation is ridiculous in a tropical environment and, as you mentioned, may soak up moisture. The goal in the tropics is always moisture reduction. Doing an image search for "shipping container" shade or shading brings up interesting results. Here's an interesting shade idea but it wouldn't hold up to much strong wind. i.pinimg.com/originals/e0/a8/13/e0a813db41b51038408c689658bf64d7.jpg and these portaroof.com.au/gallery for rigid options. www.buildshippingcontainerhouse.com/images/sunroofroofing%20005.jpg Looking at a lot of these images its very clear most people are not addressing this very pressing need - to shade their container. The key to this working is anchoring the vertical posts to the shipping container. Clearly anyone versed in metal fabrication would have immense advantages when making a home in a shipping container. I get the impression you two are pretty bright. Probably wouldn't take long to learn the basics to get started. Being able to cut that metal, repair that metal, modify that metal....that would be a huge bonus. One problem, being offgrid, is powering tools that draw so much power.

@@anashelton7104 Many people seem to use one or two containers as a framework to build out from. This only works in warm climates of course where no air conditioning or heating would be needed and the vast majority of time is spent outside or in outdoor air. But the rigidity of the container is a great thing to use and anchor things from.
